The 1960 Valdivia earthquake struck southern Chile on May 22nd, killing between 16,554 and 21,905 people. Measuring 9.5 on the moment magnitude scale, it is considered the most powerful earthquake ever recorded. The earthquake and resulting tsunami destroyed much of southern Chile, including the city of Valdivia, and also caused tsunami damage as far away as Japan and Hawaii. It was caused by tectonic plate movement and resulted in a massive rebuilding effort as emergency responders helped evacuate the devastated areas.
