Glocal Warning
Under the banner of Cultural Geographies, Globalisation and Nationalism this lecture critically examines the effects of the new neo-liberal world economic order.
Neoliberalism supports free markets, free trade, and decentralized decision-making. Broadly speaking, neoliberalism seeks to transfer control of the economy from state to the private sector. This is a particularly timely debate in light of the current global collapse of neoliberalism.
Globalisation:
The meaning is not always clear it has something to do with the idea that we all live in one world, in what ways exactly, and is the idea valid?
Accepted that globalisation exists, the world has become financially and materially interdependent.
Debates are more likely to be about the form of globalisation, how it came into being and where it will lead.
Two major issues of globalisation are communication as the driving force of social change, and increasing dependence on mobility.
I will also deal with a few of the difficulties which appear in the course of the globalisation process and look at the accompanying discussions surrounding increasingly global cultural spaces as they concern artistic practice and the cultural industries.
I will consider the idea that the art world knows no synthetic boundaries; that it realises an actually existing globalisation and that art is the vehicle for the creolisation, hybridity and mixing of cultures that challenge the conventional in aesthetics and the hegemonic in politics.
I also want to consider the relevance of nationalism as the sites of contemporary art diversify away from the traditional metropolitan centres such as London, Berlin, or New York.
Modern movement
The Modern Movement occurred between 1915-1950, during the post-WWI and WWII eras. Modernism rejected 19th century optimism and presented a pessimistic view of culture in disarray. World War I influenced Modernism by changing views of heroism and ideals. The Industrial Revolution brought new concepts like pollution. Modern literature used techniques like stream of consciousness and symbolism to capture fragmented society and inner thoughts. Modern art became more conceptual than realistic.
Gramsci's theory of cultural hegemony
Gramsci's theory of cultural hegemony posits that the ruling class maintains power through both coercion and consent. The ruling class promotes the values and norms of its ideology through cultural institutions like media and education, so that its worldview becomes the "common sense" perspective accepted by all classes. However, consent must be continuously earned, as the subordinate classes' lived experiences may cause them to reject the dominant ideology. The mass media plays a key role in this ideological struggle.

However, this period of rapid economic and social progress also coincided with growing anxieties about these changes and their effects on individuals and traditional ways of life.

In his work Civilization and its Discontents, Sigmund Freud applies his psychoanalytic theories about individual psychology to whole societies. He questions why human beings are so miserable in modern civilization and argues that the central problem is maintaining a balance between individual desires and the demands of society. Freud proposes that civilization arises from two drives in human nature: Eros, the life drive, and Thanatos, the death drive. Society controls the individual through internalized discipline and fear of losing love from the community.

Nietzsche analyzed the development of morality from master morality defined by the powerful to slave morality defined in reaction and resentment against the masters. He argued that each person must develop their own moral code through rational reflection and affirmation of life rather than adopting universal morality.

The temple and the sanctuary around were dedicated to Asklepios Zmidrenus. This name has been known since 1875 when an inscription dedicated to him was discovered in Rome. The inscription is dated in 227 AD and was left by soldiers originating from the city of Philippopolis (modern Plovdiv).
