Mary Reiby was born in England in 1777 and transported to Australia as a convict in 1791 for stealing a horse. She arrived with her husband and seven children. After her husband died in 1811, she assumed responsibility for her family and grew her businesses into a successful trading enterprise. By hard work, she became one of the most successful businesswomen in the Australian colony and gained social respect from Governor Macquarie.
