Her parents were James V and Marie of Guise
She had a cousin called Elizabeth
Born 1542 and executed 1587.
Mary was the only surviving child of James V of
Scotland and Marie of Guise. As a granddaughter
of Margaret Tudor, the older sister of Henry VIII
of England, she also had a claim to the English
crown.
4. Mary was described as a tall, healthy and attractive
woman who loved dancing and sports. She also was
accomplished at embroidery - an activity she
devoted much of her time to as an English captive.
In 1565, having returned to Scotland, she
married, Henry Stuart, commonly called Lord
Darnley. He had claims to the thrones of England
and Scotland - but very distant claims. In fact the
Hamilton family had a stronger claim to the Scottish
throne. An unpopular character, Darnley made
powerful enemies amongst the Scottish nobles and
was later assassinated in 1567.
5. Mary
In 1558 Mary got married to Francis II, and got
crowned king and queen. However Mary was
only married to Francis for a few
years, because he died with an ear infection.
