Maruti Udyog Limited was established in 1981 as a joint venture between the Indian government and Suzuki Motor Corporation of Japan to produce affordable cars for the Indian market. It launched with the Maruti 800 and experienced early success. However, labor issues arose, including conflicts over wages and hiring practices. This culminated in a major incident in 2012 when workers at the Manesar plant violently attacked supervisors, killing one, in a dispute over the suspension of a worker. The attack had long-term impacts, including job losses and lost revenue while the plant was closed for an investigation.
