Following a four year Fitter/Turner Apprenticeship, 3 years as a draughtsman
and 3 years study for a Mechanical Engineering Degree I started employment
as a Steam Turbine Maintenance and Commissioning Engineer with GEC in
1988.
To date I have progressed through various site roles from Supervisor to Site
Engineer, Construction Manager, Commissioning Engineer and steam
turbine operations to my present position as a Technical Service Engineer.
For the past 11 years I have worked in my current role at various sites in the
UK and overseas , gaining experience on a wide range of steam turbines
manufactured by AEI, English Electric, GEC, Alstom, and ABB.

Site based in the UK and overseas working on steam turbine new
construction, overhauls and retrofits.
Liverpool University: 1985 to 1988
Sponsored by BNFL to study full time at Liverpool University for a Mechanical
Engineering Degree.

Technical Service Engineer
2005-Date
Responsible for the strip down and build of steam turbines in the
UK and overseas. Duties include issuing daily work instructions,
method statements and check sheets to progress the overhaul.
Following grit blasting, NDT and strip down measurements of all
components I issue interim inspection reports recommending
remedial action where necessary. For final rebuild I issue cylinder
and diaphragm moves to correct internal clearances and calculate
final alignment moves where necessary to ensure smooth running
of the machine. On completion of the mechanical works I am often
present during run up for return to service to deal with any
operation problems which may arise due to the outage works.
Commissioning Manager
2009-2010
Responsible for the commissioning of a 490MW retrofit in the
Netherlands. I had several Mechanical and Electrical Engineers
commissioning the gland steam, lubrication oil system, turbine
drains, turbine governor, electric turning gear and turbine
supervisory equipment. The project was competed on time and all
systems met customer requirements.
Construction Manager
2001-2005
Responsible for the mechanical construction of 3 x 760 MW
turbines in Malaysia managing the turbine, generator and pipework
supervisors. I was responsible for installing the turbine supports on
the civil foundations, positioning bearing pedestals, cylinders, rotor
alignments and completion of check sheets for hand over to
commissioning.
Commissioning Engineer
1991-2001
Working for the commissioning manager on new build large steam
turbines (400-660MW) in Canada, Philippians, India, China and the
UK. Following hand over from construction I commissioned gland
steam, lubrication oil, electrical turning gear, turbine drains and
main steam valve high pressure oil systems.
During initial run up and operations I was a shift operator,
performing unit and generator tests up to handover to the
customer for commercial operation.
Site Engineer/Supervisor
1988-2001
Competent to supervise and instruct skilled and semi-skilled labour
on all aspects of a steam turbine overhaul. Typical tasks include
shaft alignment, concentricity, journal and thrust bearing work,
bolt heating and hydraulic tightening of cylinder bolts.

A design draughtsman for British Nuclear Fuels producing layout
and detail drawings for a Uranium Enrichment plant at Capenhurst,
