Factoring Polynomials:
So far, we have factored binomials, such as: (8x2 + 2x3)
                  2x2(4 + x)
Trinomials, such as: x2 + 7x + 12
       (x + 4) (x + 3)
And the difference of squares: x4 - 16

       (x2 - 4) (x2 + 4)

Lastly, we look at factoring perfect square trinomials
 such as: x2 + 10x + 25
Perfect Square Trinomials :
                  x2 + 10x + 25
A. What is a perfect square trinomial?
  1. The first term is a perfect square
  2. The third term is a perfect square
  3. Multiply the square root of the 1st term coefficient
by the square root of the 3rd term coefficient. The 2nd
term should be twice this amount.

    1 x 5 = 5; 2 x 5 = 10, the 2nd term coefficient.
Perfect Square Trinomials :
                     x2 + 10x + 25
B. How to factor a perfect square trinomial?
    1. x2 + 10x + 25:
  (x + 5) (x + 5); = (x + 5)2
   2. x2 - 12x + 36

  (x - 6) (x - 6); = (x - 6)2
Perfect Square Trinomials :

State whether the following are perfect square trinomials:

     1. x2 - 16x + 64 2. x3 + 10x + 25
     3. x2 - 10x - 25 4. 16x2 - 56x + 49
     5. 1 + 6x + 9x2
Factor the following perfect square trinomials:
   1. x2 + 2xy + y2 2. x2 - 2xy + y2
   3. x2 - 16x + 64 4. 25x2 + 20xy + 4y2
   1. (x + y)2 2. (x - y) 2 3. (x - 8) 2 4. (5x + 2y)2
Special Case Binomials :

 Square of Sums:

 1. (x + 1) 2 2
                  (x + 2x + 1) 3. (4x + 5) 2
                                        (16x2 + 40x + 25)
 2. (3x + 1)2 (9x2 + 6x + 1)
All +, + perfect square trinomials factor into square of
sum binomials.
The product of a Square of a Sum binomial (a + b)2 is:
                        a2 + 2ab + b2
Special Case Binomials :

 Square of a Difference:

 1. (x - 4) 2 2
                  (x - 8x + 16) 3. (4x - 5) 2
                                         (16x2 - 40x + 25)
 2. (3x - 1)2 (9x2 - 6x + 1)

All -, + perfect square trinomials factor into square of
difference binomials.
The product of a Square of a difference binomial
                     (a - b)2 is:
                         a2 - 2ab + b2
Special Case Binomials :

1. (6x - 5)(6x + 5) (36x2 - 25)

2. (m - 10)(m + 10) (m2 - 100)
The product of a Sum and a difference is:
                      a2 - b2
which is: The difference of squares
                          or:
