The marathon is a long-distance foot race of 42.195 kilometers that originated from a Greek messenger named Pheidippides announcing a victory over Persia. It became an Olympic event in 1921 and now includes over 800 organized races annually with some having tens of thousands of participants. Training programs typically last five to six months, including long runs of 20 miles or more and 40 miles per week on average, under the guidance of a health professional. Five of the largest marathons in Boston, New York City, Chicago, London, and Berlin make up the biannual World Marathon Majors series.
