Filipides was a Greek soldier who ran over 37 miles to announce victory over the Persians at the Battle of Marathon. Though the details are mythological, his run inspired the modern marathon racing event. A marathon is an endurance footrace of 42.195 kilometers that was included in the first modern Olympics in 1896. The standardized distance commemorates the legend of Filipides running from Marathon to Athens to announce victory.
