Sally Lockhart Essay
Introduction There is a variety of ways that Philip Pullman has presented Sally Lockhart. Firstly,
Sally is portrayed as brave because she is really independent: her father is dead, tough/a strong
women as she could stand up for herself and was able to look after herself especially since she
was only 16 years old and the book was based in the Victorian Era therefore, there was a bit of
sexism, saying that only male s could do certain things. Pullman also shows the reader that Sally is
very mature and intelligent. Throughout the opening chapters, Pullman introduces us to a
nightmare that Sally has about her father and the description makes her seem so intriguing because
she was a person who didn t need company and would still be happy however... Show more content

This is because everyone treasures the ruby and wants to have it so badly able to sacrifice for it
and when Sally is in possession of the ruby; she does not value it as the others do. This is
implied in the quote in the centre of the crumpled whiteness was a dome of blood. It was hard
and cold. The dome of blood resembles the danger of the ruby; Sally does not have the need to
feel that this is something, which she must treasure like the others who have been intoxicated
by it. Instead, it is just shown by the adjectives used: hard, and cold. The repetition of and, puts
emphasis on each description of the ruby, showing how empty of emotion it is to Sally. Mrs
Holland was so obstinate that she wanted the ruby; she ends up dying after telling Sally all the
information she wanted to know. She wanted to know how her father died and why, and this is
when she finds out that her real father was Major Marchbanks. Mrs Holland died because she
jumped into the river with the ruby that Sally threw it into. The ruby mesmerized Major
Marchbanks and he wanted to trade the ruby for Sally when she was a little baby. Captain
Lockhart thought that Major Marchbanks was a coward and so he decided to be the father of
Sally, as she would have died. In chapter 19, she finds herself shooting the man that killed her
father Hendrik Van Eeden or Ah Ling. You can see that she bottles

An Invisible Thread Compare And Contrast
Compare and contrast A SImple Act and An Invisible Thread Hello and welcome to an essay
that could help expand on the compare and contrast of A Simple Act and An Invisible Thread .
This is a compare and contrast essay that will expand on how the two stories are the same and
how they are different. The two stories that I will be comparing and contrasting are A Simple Act
and An Invisible Thread . Although A Simple Act and An Invisible Thread sound the same, there
are a lot of differences in the two stories. Let s get on with the body before I get into to many
specifics. For this paragraph I will be talking about the many difference the two stories have. The
story A Simple Act takes place in the 1980s and the story An Invisible

##versical Dilemmas, And Peter Singer s The Singer...
The subject of suffering has been a discussion of debate among numerous philosophers for many
decades. In the article, The Singer Solution to World Poverty, Peter Singer forms two theoretical
scenarios to encourage readers to consider their obligations in aiding children in need; in the poem
Musee des Beaux Arts, by W.H. Auden, employs the use of two paintings to illustrate the
indifference of humanity to individual suffering. At first, readers will say that both pieces are
noticeably different in terms of selflessness, but a thorough inspection of both works uncovers a
misleading truth that imply controversial opinions on the issue. The usage of imaginary incidents
in both writings contain problems of distortion of actuality. The inaccurate evidence will likely
trigger readers to be inclined to reach deceptive assumptions in regards to the author s proposed
solutions.
First, in The Singer Solution to World Poverty, Singer deceives actuality when he generates two
events in which an individual is faced with an ethical dilemma whether to save a child or sacrifice
his or her luxuries. In the second scenario offered by Singer, Bob faces the choice of either turning
the switch on the railroad to save a child or letting the train destroy his life savings, a Bugatti.
Furthermore, people will condemn Bob for not freeing the child. Though, Singer argues as there is
no distinct line amongst the situation and the real life issue of donating money to children in need,

Recession Turmoil Caused By U.s. Subprime Mortgage Crisis
Wall Street turmoil caused by U.S. Subprime Mortgage Crisis had eventually evolved to global
financial crisis. The financial crisis that has engulfed the world is really a disaster, leading to
precipitous shrinkage of human wealth and instantaneous evaporation of long time efforts by
financial institutions. But why did such financial crisis take place? Who should be blamed?
As far as I concern, Federal Reserve deserves the greatest blame, as its ultra loose monetary policy
created housing bubble, sowing the seeds of crisis. And its subsequent tighten policy pricked that
kind of bubble, precipitatingsubprime mortgage crisis. Together with the former Fed chairman Alan
Greenspan indulged rampant financial derivatives, which made the economy worse off.
From 2001, Federal Reserve began to cut interest rates, and after cutting for 13 times, by
june.2003, it reduced target rate to 1% which hit the lowest level in the past 46 years. Due to
such loose monetary policy, lending rates declined at the same time, 30 year fixed mortgage rates
dropped from 8.1%in 2000 to 5.8% in 2003. In this case, Americans house purchasing enthusiasm
rose dramatically. And speculating on real estate appeared. However bubble would burst
eventually. From june.2005, Federal Reserve began to reserve its low interest rate policy, and
raised its interest rates for 13 times, so by august.2006, Fed target rate was increased from 1% to
5.25%. The interest rates were put up continuously, which increased borrowing

Obama Vs. Clinton And Burr Vs Ross Essay
In early September, Burr was leading Ross with 46.7% to 43% according to Real Clear Politics.
By early November, he was only ahead by an average of 1.5%. While North Carolina is widely
considered a battleground state, Five Thirty Eight gave Burr a 73.4% chance of winning reelection.
With the exception of a drop in the middle of October, Burrs chances of winning were consistent
throughout the Senate race as shown below in figure 2.
Although Burr was never able to reach 50% in the polls, he exceeded that threshold on Election
Day and defeated Ross by almost 6%. In order to analyze the political climate further, I will be
comparing the exit polls for both Trump vs. Clinton and Burr vs Ross. This will help explain why
Ross was entering the Senate race with a disadvantage despite media pundits arguing that higher
turnout in presidential election years should benefit Ross. Although Five Thirty Eight gave Clinton
the slight edge to defeat Trump in North Carolina, Trump s was able to carry the state with a
modest performance. Although Real Clear Politics had Burr winning by an average of 2%, that was
certainly below the 5.7% final result. In a three way race between Trump, Clinton, and Johnson,
Trump was predicted to win North Carolina by about 1%. The actual results, however, showed
Trump winning by about 4%. Although this paper is focusing on the Senate race, it s certainly
important to note the impact that a presidential candidate can have on the electoral map, particularly

Analysis of the Movie Doctor Zhivago Essay
Analysis of the Movie Doctor Zhivago
Doctor Zhivago is a historically accurate movie. It is a love story that takes place during the
Russian Revolution, World War One, and the Russian Civil War. Doctor Zhivago is historically
correct because of the events it represents, the people the actors portray, and the level of detail put
into the setting. At the beginning of the movie, there is a scene showing a man handing out flyers
asking workers to join him in a peaceful march to protest against the Tsar. The man s name is
Pasha. He is an ordinary worker who believes to reform Russia there must be a complete
revolution of thought and action. Pahsa, when asked if he was part of the Bolshevik party, claims no
allegiance. The Bolsheviks ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Gapon was the organizer and leader of the Bloody Sunday march. He too escaped with his life.
After Bloody Sunday , he sent a letter the Tsar of Russia saying, The innocent blood of workers,
their wives and children, lies forever between thee. After the massacre, Gapon became very
violent and became one of the leaders of the uprising. In Doctor Zhivago, Laura s fiancГ©
changes his name from Pasha to Strelnikauf and becomes a leader of the uprising too. Gapon and
Strelinkauf are quite similar in their actions and beliefs. Nine years after the Bloody Sunday
Massacre , Russia becomes involved with World War One. In the movie, there is a scene where
Russian troops are marching through Moscow and the town s people are cheering for them.
During this scene, the narrator describes how when he entered the war, the party gave him the
job the recruit troops. Bolsheviks, now referring to themselves as the party, wanted the Tsar
removed and the power placed in the hands of the people. The Bolsheviks believed that the
troops fighting in the war would soon become tired a weary, and would be easily convinced to
come join the party. The narrator in the movie mentions this tactic by saying that the soldiers boots
were new, and by the time they would wear out, they would join the party. The narrator of the
movie described how Russians looked at the war. It was the Germans verse the Russians. This is
very historically accurate. During World War One, Russian

Pain Is A Complex Interaction Involving Sensory, Emotional...
Pain is a complex interaction involving sensory, emotional and behavioural factors, so its definition
and treatment must include these aspects. According to Loeser and Melzack in Pain: an overview,
the best definition of pain is that endorsed by the International Association for the study of pain.
Painis an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue
damage, or described in such terms of such damage. Until the 1960s, pain was considered an
inevitable sensory response to tissue damage . Pain is now costing the NHS millions everyday,
back pain represents half of all chronic pain and costs the NHS ВЈ1.3 million every day.
There are two types of pain; Acute or Fast pain, this is a protective event that enables the
organism to localise pain rapidly and accurately and withdraw from a stimulus to reduce further
damage . The second type of pain is Chronic, this is commonly triggered by an injury or disease,
but may be perpetuated by factors other than the cause of pain. The injury may exceed the body s
capability for healing. One will be diagnosed with chronic pain if the pain continues 3 months after
normal healing time for the injury at hand. Pain occurs due to four processes, Transduction,
Transmission, Modulation and finally Perception. For pain to be felt all four processes must occur
in synchronisation. Pain can affect people differently, this could be due to their; Gender, Sex or
age. Studies have found that rates of most

Like Water for Chocolate and Master Harold: Oppression
In the two novels, Master Harold...and the boys and the boys, and Like

individuals strongly oppressed, or discriminated against.
Although the individuals are being oppressed for different reasons their emotions are shattered

The Pros And Cons Of The Hollandish Roulette System
The Hollandish roulette system (like the Martingale and the Labouchere system,it a negative
progression system where you boost your bets following a reduction to claw back again to
earnings). Like these other systems, this is generally played out on the even payout wagers (red
/dark etc).
The huge difference would be that the Hollandish is a lesser risk system it is a lot less
competitive than the Martingale. The primary approach to calming things down , is to separated
your procedure into mini consultations of 3 spins. This basic idea of splitting up your guess
progression has spawned a number of systems
Instead of upping your wagers after each damage, as you do with the Martingale, in the Hollandish
system, you adjust your gamble after ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cons
You could still get trapped within an increasing guess spiral if your luck is not operating your way.
Could be sluggish to grind through the known levels.
Example
Here is a good example of a Hollandish collection we played lately. Notice, we began on 2 (you
can multiple the essential series by whatever you want, so 1,3,5,7,9 becomes 2,6,10,14,18 etc.
This method can be an example of a poor development system like the Martingale or D Alembert,
therefore you boost your wagers size following a damage is manufactured by you. However, there
are several differences, too.
The very first thing you should know about this interesting system is that the development it uses is
determined by what size your initial guess is. Presuming you guess ?1 to start out with it appears
the following: 1,3,5,7,9
For larger original bets, double it simply. A starting guess of ?2 would give you2,6,10,14,18
Like other negative development systems, when you make a profitable gamble you go back to the
beginning again simply, so you will not be gambling with huge amounts of your winnings. This is
one way other negative development system do work, however the big difference here s that you
play each level of the Hollandish system 3

Taking a Look at Rosemary
Rosemary has been used for centuries as a pain reliever and cooking supplement. But through time
rosemary has been not only a name, but adapted to modern day medicine. Rosemary may even be
the future aid to slow the progression of Alzheimer s disease. It could be the medicine of the future.
Rosemary, or Rosmarinusofficinalis, was originally grown in the Mediterranean. However, there are
many recordings of rosemaryin Egypt where they buried their dead with rosemary on their graves
or in their tombs. Rosemary was also mentioned in Shakespeare, in Romeo and Juliet, Juliet wore
rosemary throughout the entire story to foreshadow her death. And in Anzac day in Australia
citizens are expected to wear rosemary in honor of their dead ancestors (2014 Monterey Bay
Spice Company). Aside from rosemary s obvious symbolism for death it also symbolizes
memory. Shakespeare mentioned rosemary once again in Hamlet, but this time speaking of it out
of an aid for remembrance. In Latin rosemary is Ros Maris, which means dew of the sea because of
its growth near water and in Spainit is called Romero. The reasoning behind rosemary s name is
because if the story once told about a Mediterranean woman who, in hopes to hide her baby from
King Herod, hid under a rosemary bush when she attempted to flee to Egypt. The woman s name
was Mary and rosemary was considered a rose bush. In the Middle Ages rosemary was also burnt in
the homes of many because of its foretold ability to ward

Implementation Of The Sdn Switch Core, Interconnection Of...
This section contains information about the implementation of the SDN switch core,
interconnection of multiple SDN switches with the SDN controller (PowerPC) and the attacker
nodes (Microblaze). The main functionality of the SDN switch is to modify packet header fields
based on the flow table and forward it to the next port(s). The SDN controller is responsible for
programming the flow table in each switch and monitor these switches to observe each packet
flow. The Microblaze processor, acting as attacker nodes plays the role of an outside network and
transmits packets at different programmable rates to the SDN switch network using an array of
packet drivers. The big picture showing the connection between different components is given in
Figure 3.1. The chapter is divided into two main sections. Section 3.1 describes the details of
hardware implementation and section 3.4 describes the software implementation. 3.1SDN Switch

Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development Self Efficacy ...
In Vygotsky s concept, zone of proximal development he explains that it is the distance between a
child s developmental level, which is determined by independent problem solving and the level of
potential development as determined through problem solving under adult guidance (Vygotsky,
1978, p174). This conceptis highly used in education and in classrooms. For example, I work
with a student who is eighteen years of age and has intellectual disabilities. During our morning
routine he enjoys working on puzzles. He has a difficult time putting the puzzle together so I
help him with clues and or prompt him to the puzzle piece that fits. He moves onto a new puzzle
once I no longer have to give him clues or prompts. As I have tracked his progress he has needed
less prompt than he did three months ago. The goal of this concept is that, as an adult collaborates
with a child to help them move from where they are to where they should be with help by
accomplishing the exercise through prompts, clues, modeling, and etc. Bandura has studied self
efficacy, which is the extent or strength of one s belief in one s own ability to complete tasks and
reach goals. Self efficacy can affect all types of behaviors like academics, social and recreational.
A child might have the ability to accomplish a task, but if they do not feel like they are capable of
doing so, then they may fail or may not attempt the task. For example, in a study difficult math
problems were given to children with

Tsarist Autocracy In Russia
The Tsarist regime, an often barbaric feudal system, was balancing on the eve of collapse even
before the outbreak of World War One in 1914. Tsarism has a long and troubled history frequently
changing its views and opinions whilst demanding full dedication from its citizens. Tsarism s woes
were amplified at the dawn of the 20th century. Tsarism refused modernisation in a modern world
which led to events of historical merit such as the Bloody Sunday Massacre, and the Lena
Goldfields massacre. However, World War One did play a significant role in inciting revolution
against the Tsarist regime.
The Tsarist autocracy inflicted its brutality upon the Russian people since Ivan III (Oxley, 2001)

Russia was performing dismally in the Russo Japanese war which took a heavy toll on the
standard of living in Russia. An immense amount of supplies and able bodied soldiers were
being carted away on the now military only Trans Siberian railway, all of which took a heavy
toll on the already weakened economy (Wormald, 2017). Father Gapon, a charismatic priest
living in St. Petersburg, ran the Assembly of Russian Factory Workers, and found himself
surrounded by many anti tsar extremists, and became an important historical figure when
examining the fall of Tsarism (Simkin, 1997). A peaceful protests lead by Father Gapon

Marine Mammal Bycatch Essay
Throughout the years, marine mammal bycatch has continued to be a growing concern due to a
steady increase in mammal mortality rates. Mike Gaworecki mentions in his article that during this
past month the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration initiated a rule limiting seafood
imports from different countries that do not meet the United States new bycatch standards. Bycatch
is a term that means catching unwanted species when intending to fishfor a different type of species.
On a daily basis multiple dolphins, whales, and other unwanted animals are being captured because
of inappropriate or ill suited forms of netting and traps. By implementing this rule the United States
government hopes to prevent and reduce future cases of inappropriate capture. NOAA claims that
they feel this is necessary because they want to enforce more restrictions on fishery related marine
mammal deaths, while influencing other countries to improve on their fishingmethods.
The reason for this sudden ruling was because several conservation groups joined together to sue
the American government for lack of improvement throughout the years on fishery imports from
other countries. By losing this ruling, the United States government has been forced to change their

Behaviourists explain maladaptive behaviour in terms of the learning principles that sustain and
maintain it. Discuss this statement and show how a behaviourists approach to therapy is in stark
contrast to a psychoanalytic one
Behaviorism was originally founded by John B. Watsonwho believed that behavior had the means
to be measured, trained and changed (1913) The Behavioural theory is firstly based on experiment
and secondly by describing how human behaviour is learnt through principles and rules.
Maladaptive behaviour is when an individual is unable to adjust to situations; psychologists use this
term to describe patterns of emotional disturbance. Both behavioural and psychoanalytic

(1927)Watson and Rayner (1920) extends Pavlov s study as they wanted to see if it applied to
humans as well as animals, they done this with their little albert experiment. Albert was a nine
month old infant, he was tested on his reactions to various stimuli, he was shown a white rat, and
a rabbit, a monkey and various masks, and he showed no fear to any of these stimuli. They noticed
that if a hammer was struck against at steel bar behind his head he would be startled and he would
burst into tears. The noise was the unconditioned stimuli and Albert crying was the unconditioned
response. When Albert was 11 months old the white rat was presented and seconds later the
hammer was struck against the steel bar. This was done repeatedly over the next 7 weeks, making
Albert burst into tears. The white rat was the neutral stimuli, when paired with the noise it became
the conditioned stimuli. When Albert saw the rat he would show fear and cry. Albert learnt the
association between the rat and the noise creating a phobia. Watson and Rayner (1920)
Systematic desensitisation is a technique associated with classical conditioning; this can be used to
remove maladaptive behaviours like anxiety, panic and fear by substituting the unconditioned

Monkey Beach by Eden Robinson
The fundamental characteristic of magical realism is its duality, which enables the reader to
experience both the character s past and the present. In the novel, Monkey Beach, Eden Robinson
uses this literary device to address the the trauma and mistreatment of the Haisla community in
Canada by unveiling the intimate memories of the protagonist, Lisamarie, and the resulting
consequences of this oppression. Monkey Beach illustrates how abuse in the past leads to another
form of self medication in the future a neverending, vicious cycle for the members of the Haisla

From the tone of Mick s voice, the alcohol acts a sedative to numb the pain from his past. This
motive for drinking is also evident through Lisa s brother, Jimmy, after he loses both his
girlfriend, Adelaine, and his goal in becoming an Olympic swimmer. The legacy of residential
school is also manifested in Trudy and Tab s mother daughter relationship. Tab becomes the
victim of her mother s psychological and emotional upheaval that is a result from her childhood.
In the grip of alcohol, Trudy often mistreats Tab. Removed from a family environment and
placed in a reformation school, individuals return not only emotionally and psychologically
scarred, but also unable to reestablish their own functional family. Tab confesses to Lisa that she
wishes she had a mother like hers, saying, You re lucky. You re really lucky that your dad was
too young to go to rez school. [...] Just Mick and my mum went and it fucked them up (Robinson

According to the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, one of the basic principles our country
is based on is the freedom of speech. Because of this, as eras and ages have passed in this still
young and growing country, this amendment has had a greater use then stated, as to just insure a

A second document that perfectly personifies the achieving of equality amongst individuals, is
from Malcolm X s The Ballot or the Bullet. Malcolm X, like many great orators, uses a number of
literary techniques in his speech to persuade the audience of his argument. One example of how
Malcolm does this, is seen as he states No, I m not an American. I m one of the 22 million black
people who are the victims of Americanism. One of the 22 million black people who are the
victims of democracy, nothing but disguised hypocrisy. Immediately following this, again states
So, I m not standing here speaking to you as an American, or a patriot, or a flag saluter, or a flag
waver no, not I. I m speaking as a victim of this American system. And I see America through the
eyes of the victim. I don t see any American dream; I see an American nightmare (Breitman 26).
As can be seen, Malcolm uses a more sympathetic approach to gaining support, or specifically
speaking, an emotional appeal. By using his personal reference, like the declaration, he become one
with the audience in a peer to peer relationship. This intern

Freudian Reading Of The Rocking Horse Winner
A Freudian Reading of The Rocking Horse Winner D.H. Lawrence s The Rocking Horse Winner
delves into a son s primal instinct of overshadowing his father in order to please his mother sexually
the Oedipus complex. Masturbatory overtones are found throughout the story in an attempt to
hypersexualize money and prove that love has been displaced with wealth in this familial
environment. However, despite Paul s efforts, the money he selflessly earns for his mothercan never
buy her love. This only incentivizes Paul to work harder, which in turn drives him mad and leads
to his own downfall. From a young age, Paul and his siblings have a mutual understanding with
their mother that she does not love them. The narrator states, Nevertheless, when her children were
present, she always felt the centre of her heart go hard... Only she herself, and her children
themselves, knew [the mother s adoration of her children] was not so (1). While this proves
difficult for the children to bear, it proves the most difficult for Paul. When Paul is young, he
becomes curious as to why his familydoes not keep a car of their own. According to his mother, it
is Because we re the poor members of the family (2), which is ...because [Paul s] father has no
luck (3). Paul then informs his mother that he is lucky, hoping to impress her, but she does not
believe him. According to Freudian psychology, Paul s response is appropriate. The narrator

The Half Truth Of First Mover Advantage
The Half Truth of First Mover Advantage
The first mover advantage is defined as a firm s ability to be better off than its competitors as a
result of being the first to market in a new product category. This concept is accepted without
questioning or objecting it, a great amount of mangers believe that be incorporating this status will
increase their competitive advantage and obtaining a great part of the market share. There are
executives that believe that the first mover is a great advantage that will make their business
succeed in every industry that they enter, the case is that there are many scientific refutals of this
method because not every firm has the same sources as others, and the market and technology
change differently, plus we must include other different factors. The research in this article found
situations in which companies are successful with the first mover method, but also found situations
where firms need different sources and sometimes are unsuccessful. In the article, we found two
factors that influence greatly the first mover s success, this factors are:
The pace at which the technology of the product is evolving
The pace at which the market for the product is expanding
By, knowing this factors we can create a strategy in competing in the market depending on these
factors, after doing this we could distinguish between the long term advantage which can increase a

Art Vs Old Art
Art is a good way for people to relax and admire the power of human creativity, a lot of pieces of
art will make you agape at the beauty of it. However, old art pieces created centuries ago are
starting to fall apart. Scientific studies are being conducted on each piece of art trying to figure
out how exactly the artist created these masterpieces, and to possibly find a way to stop them
from withering away, and to keep them around for many more centuries to come and so many
more generations of people can see. Science has some part in everything, even art. There are
many different ways science is involved in art, they can conduct a study on what people like in
art to try make a new masterpiece, or why people are so infatuated with the older pieces.
However, this is not the main studies on art. Old art is falling apart and we need to find a way to
fix it. A group of scientists from Italy have started a program called MOLAB in which they go to
art galleries across the world and study art pieces. They have looked at countless pieces across the
world, and have figured out the many different colors in some art pieces which can range to about
600 different colors; they also find out how many layers of paint are on one paintingor on one
specific spot. Jason Palmer, a scientist working for MOLAB was working on a newer painting

Definitions Of Family In Kurdistan
Family in Kurdistan In this essay, I will be exploring an essential word that can be understood or
elucidated in various ways based on three perceptions, which is Family. The word family is
defined as a group consisting of one or two parents, their children and close relations according to
Oxford dictionary. However, the word family is described differently bases on the people s
educational level in Kurdistan. Firstly, among the educated or modernized members of the
community family is defined as the source in which they gain their respect and pride. Moreover,
this class of the community is either less or not patriarchal, and all of the family members have
the same rights without exceptions. On the other hand, while the majority of Kurdistan s
population has a low educational background, therefore the uneducated portion of our society
defines family as several relatives in a house that is mostly led by a male, and moral values are
considered to be related to females. In contrast to all, I believe that family does not relate only to
blood relatives or living things. Instead, family can relate to the people and things that get along
and are based on each other, therefore, one loses its value in the absence of the other. Hence, in this

Encounters With An Archdruid Summary
Taylor Cox AP Environmental Science 2 April 2017 Encounters with an Archdruid details the
adventures of environmentalist David Brower, as a compoundment of narratives...of journeys
made in three wildernesses on a coastal island, in a Western mountain range, and on the Colorado
River in the Grand Canyon. (McPhee, 2). Journalist John McPhee wrote the book after researching
Brower s tales of struggle against miners, developers, and even the United States Bureau of
Reclamation. Encounters with an Archdruid is broken into three sections, one for each of Bower s
adventures. The first explains Brower s interaction with Charles Park, a mineral engineer inent
locating and utilizing mineral reserves in Glacier Peak Wilderness. Charles Park is depicted in the

The Fall Of Russia
Undoubtedly, Russia is the largest country in the world, spanning an area of 17.1 million square
kilometers (Paranyushkin). Geographically, Russia is astounding in it s vast, treeless plains that
span for hundreds of miles known as the Steppes (). The region of Siberia, which supports one of
the harshest climates in the world, dominates most of Northern Asia and extends the country s
borders further past Europe. This marks it as an influential actor in the international community.
Currently, Russias president is Vladimir Putin, who was in power from 2000 to 2008 and then

Inevitably, diminishing oil prices weaken Russia s GDP and will continue to pull its economy
in a downward direction following each drop in price. Moreover, the value of Russia s ruble has
experienced a decrease in value since the fall of 2014 weakening exchange rates (). As of today,
one Russian ruble is only worth 0.017 USD. Along with the country s weak economic growth,
Russia s annexation of Crimea and the outbreak of war in Ukraine have contributed to the
devaluation of Russian currency ().
Noticeably, Russia s economic struggles have affected its people, especially those who live in
poverty. Today, roughly 13.4% of Russia s people live in poverty (). For this reason, Russia s
economic inequality continues to be one of its biggest issues. According to the investment bank
Credit Suisse, Russia has the highest rate of inequality in the world with 35% of the household
income belonging to an elite few (). However, when exchange rates are taken into account, the
average wealth of Russia has decreased overall. The Credit Suisse s reports continues to source the
issue by stating, At the time of transition there were hopes that Russia would convert to a high
skilled, high income economy with strong social protection programs inherited from Soviet Union

Anatomy is the study of the structure of the body and the physical relationships involved between
body systems (Ross and Wilson, 2006). Physiology is a subsection of biology that deals with the
organs, structures and how it integrates with the human body to create life. Anatomy and
physiology are interwoven and its function depends on its structure and form.
The body is comprised of different levels of organizations that are made up of cells, tissues, organs
and organ systems, which enables the structure to function. (Thibodeau and Patton, 2005)
The body is comprised of 10 major anatomical systems and they are: Cardiovascular system,
Respiratory system, Digestive system, Nervous system, Urinary system, Immune system, Endocrine

Civil Rights Movement Courage
The Civil Rights Movement is often portrayed as white men against black men but the women
definitely had their dog in the fight so to speak. McGuire recounts the important events of the civil
rights movement and highlights the courage exhibited by African American women. She hits the
nail on the head in terms of the civil rights movement. The civil rights movement was fueled by the
courage and the togetherness of the black people, particularly black women. These Black women
had the courage to speak up; the courage to fight for justice; the courage to defend black
womanhood. Despite the risk of being imprisoned, beaten or lynched these women stood together
to fight for what was right. If it hadn t been for their courage I m not sure if the

Why Is The Pearl Bad
Sometimes one must search for a valuable pearl and find the true villain of that world. The
search for that pearl does not need to go any farther than John Steinbeck s The Pearl. In this story,

Kino knew that the pearl was evil, but he still did not give the pearl away. Kino himself stated that
Do not speak anymore. In the morning we will sell the pearl, then the evil will be gone, and the

also stated that, This pearl is like a sin! It will destroy us. Kino acts like he is a man, shows no

care about the evil that will hurt his family, he just wants the money. Kino shows a lot of ignorance,

Overall, the true villain of this churning story is the one and only Kino. His own thoughts, his

Girl By Jamaica Kincaid
Mothers nag us with chores and tell us to straighten up when we mess up, but mothers always
know best and do everything out of love for their children. The short story Girl by Jamaica Kincaid
demonstrates this in a list of instructions a mother gives to her daughter to help her live a successful
life. Directions that are listed involve food, clothes, social skills, health, and protection of public
image. Together these tasks assist in characterizing the motherand daughter. In Girl, Jamaica
Kincaid employs characterization through the characters actions, conflict, and dialogue to reveal

daughter s youth, she does not understand how to dress and act in pubic, so the mother reprimands
her by identifying the bad behavior and provides instruction for the proper way to act. Although the
mother s instructions are very clear, the daughter still becomes a slut. Later, the mother instructs
this is how to behave in the presence of men who don t know you very well, and this way they won

point in the story, has become a slut (Kincaid #). The daughter s direct defiance of her mother s
instructions shows her lack of respect and immaturity. Even though the daughter has gone against
her mother, the mothers love for her daughter is still apparent by the help she continues to provide.

people that were administered a placebo. I myself dropped almost eight lbs. in the first thirty
days, which was some thing I had never done in the past. And I didn t have to go famished, or

Shock your pool about a week before closing it. This cleans the water and gives the chlorine level
time to drop back down to the desired 1 to 3 ppm. If your chlorine level is too high when you close
your pool the chlorine will prevent the algaecide you ll be adding later from working.
Clean the pool of all debris, dust and algae. Use the vacuum and the net to remove all contaminants
from the pool.
Test your pool water and adjust the water chemistry as needed to reach a pH level between 7.2 and
7.8. Adjust your pool s total alkalinity to a range of 100 to 150 ppm.
Add a water clarifier as well as an algaecide to your pool. Run the pool pump for one day to
thoroughly circulate these added chemicals.
Pool stores sell winterization kits that include all the chemicals you need to add to your pool for
winter. You can purchase one of these kits and follow the instructions to make closing your pool

Another challenge to the country is poverty. The DRC is one of the countries that poverty is

Prince Myshkin Essay
Concepts such as compassion, thoughtfulness, and empathy are what people all over the world
would seemingly strive for. Often, however, these benevolent ideas of the way society should be,
are muddled and manipulated by the reality of the way society actually is. Prince Myshkin, a
Russian man who represents the essence of kindness and morality, is thrown into the high society
of Petersburg, a society that is obsessed with money, power and reputation. In his selfless attempts
to save his companions from their destructive evil , Prince Myshkin is in turn transformed and

in a few social orders and has kept going up to this point. In 1680 two thirds of the individuals on
the Caribbean island of
Barbados were slaves. In 1860 slaves still made up about 13% of the whole populace
of the United States, and very nearly 50% of the populace in the US South. In expansive parts of

The Rocking Horse Winner Analytical Essay
Everyone Has a Secret That Controls The Inside
By: Anna DeWitt

Living behind a façade in life can bring complications to those who value things in life. The
Rocking Horse Winner by D.H. Lawrence is a symbolic short story that represents the idea that the
more one s values lie with material goods the less one is able to connect with reality or the
intangible tenets of life. This perspective is supported throughout the story by the direct
characterization of Hester and Paul, the use of personification and similes and in the rising action
to the conclusion s gradual release of detail.
D.H. Lawrence accomplishes the theme by using dramatic relationships with the characters, Paul

The yearning desire for wealth changed Paul s character, making him a round character by the
changes shown through his eyes in, his eyes had a strange glare in them... (298). Paul gained his
wealth by predicting the names of winning horses by riding on his rocking horse, his uncle
would take him to horse derby s where he would place high wages to earn money for love.
Money cannot buy love nor happiness as shown in, Quite moderately nice (304) Paul s mother
said in a voice so cold and absent it made him strive for more. Paul s greatest conflict is against
himself, because he allows pressure from his mother and society to drive him into a yearning for
money and social status, the outcome of this conflict resulted in his death.
The author uses symbolism to show the burning desire of acceptance in the higher class and how
it changed Paul s outlook on life. The rocking horse is an object Paul revolves his dependence on.
It is a symbol for his family desires, as a rocking horse has no end to its rocking, similar to his
family s cycle of materialism; there is no end to their quest of monetary gain of status in society
and wealth as said in, My family has been a gambling family... (305). The mother s family has a
past of gamblers and money cravers. Paul s increasing obsession for acceptance is shown through

  • 2. Sally Lockhart Essay Introduction There is a variety of ways that Philip Pullman has presented Sally Lockhart. Firstly, Sally is portrayed as brave because she is really independent: her father is dead, tough/a strong women as she could stand up for herself and was able to look after herself especially since she was only 16 years old and the book was based in the Victorian Era therefore, there was a bit of sexism, saying that only male s could do certain things. Pullman also shows the reader that Sally is very mature and intelligent. Throughout the opening chapters, Pullman introduces us to a nightmare that Sally has about her father and the description makes her seem so intriguing because she was a person who didn t need company and would still be happy however... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is because everyone treasures the ruby and wants to have it so badly able to sacrifice for it and when Sally is in possession of the ruby; she does not value it as the others do. This is implied in the quote in the centre of the crumpled whiteness was a dome of blood. It was hard and cold. The dome of blood resembles the danger of the ruby; Sally does not have the need to feel that this is something, which she must treasure like the others who have been intoxicated by it. Instead, it is just shown by the adjectives used: hard, and cold. The repetition of and, puts emphasis on each description of the ruby, showing how empty of emotion it is to Sally. Mrs Holland was so obstinate that she wanted the ruby; she ends up dying after telling Sally all the information she wanted to know. She wanted to know how her father died and why, and this is when she finds out that her real father was Major Marchbanks. Mrs Holland died because she jumped into the river with the ruby that Sally threw it into. The ruby mesmerized Major Marchbanks and he wanted to trade the ruby for Sally when she was a little baby. Captain Lockhart thought that Major Marchbanks was a coward and so he decided to be the father of Sally, as she would have died. In chapter 19, she finds herself shooting the man that killed her father Hendrik Van Eeden or Ah Ling. You can see that she bottles ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. ##versical Dilemmas, And Peter Singer s The Singer... The subject of suffering has been a discussion of debate among numerous philosophers for many decades. In the article, The Singer Solution to World Poverty, Peter Singer forms two theoretical scenarios to encourage readers to consider their obligations in aiding children in need; in the poem Musee des Beaux Arts, by W.H. Auden, employs the use of two paintings to illustrate the indifference of humanity to individual suffering. At first, readers will say that both pieces are noticeably different in terms of selflessness, but a thorough inspection of both works uncovers a misleading truth that imply controversial opinions on the issue. The usage of imaginary incidents in both writings contain problems of distortion of actuality. The inaccurate evidence will likely trigger readers to be inclined to reach deceptive assumptions in regards to the author s proposed solutions. First, in The Singer Solution to World Poverty, Singer deceives actuality when he generates two events in which an individual is faced with an ethical dilemma whether to save a child or sacrifice his or her luxuries. In the second scenario offered by Singer, Bob faces the choice of either turning the switch on the railroad to save a child or letting the train destroy his life savings, a Bugatti. Furthermore, people will condemn Bob for not freeing the child. Though, Singer argues as there is no distinct line amongst the situation and the real life issue of donating money to children in need, wealthy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Recession Turmoil Caused By U.s. Subprime Mortgage Crisis Wall Street turmoil caused by U.S. Subprime Mortgage Crisis had eventually evolved to global financial crisis. The financial crisis that has engulfed the world is really a disaster, leading to precipitous shrinkage of human wealth and instantaneous evaporation of long time efforts by financial institutions. But why did such financial crisis take place? Who should be blamed? As far as I concern, Federal Reserve deserves the greatest blame, as its ultra loose monetary policy created housing bubble, sowing the seeds of crisis. And its subsequent tighten policy pricked that kind of bubble, precipitatingsubprime mortgage crisis. Together with the former Fed chairman Alan Greenspan indulged rampant financial derivatives, which made the economy worse off. From 2001, Federal Reserve began to cut interest rates, and after cutting for 13 times, by june.2003, it reduced target rate to 1% which hit the lowest level in the past 46 years. Due to such loose monetary policy, lending rates declined at the same time, 30 year fixed mortgage rates dropped from 8.1%in 2000 to 5.8% in 2003. In this case, Americans house purchasing enthusiasm rose dramatically. And speculating on real estate appeared. However bubble would burst eventually. From june.2005, Federal Reserve began to reserve its low interest rate policy, and raised its interest rates for 13 times, so by august.2006, Fed target rate was increased from 1% to 5.25%. The interest rates were put up continuously, which increased borrowing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Obama Vs. Clinton And Burr Vs Ross Essay In early September, Burr was leading Ross with 46.7% to 43% according to Real Clear Politics. By early November, he was only ahead by an average of 1.5%. While North Carolina is widely considered a battleground state, Five Thirty Eight gave Burr a 73.4% chance of winning reelection. With the exception of a drop in the middle of October, Burrs chances of winning were consistent throughout the Senate race as shown below in figure 2. Although Burr was never able to reach 50% in the polls, he exceeded that threshold on Election Day and defeated Ross by almost 6%. In order to analyze the political climate further, I will be comparing the exit polls for both Trump vs. Clinton and Burr vs Ross. This will help explain why Ross was entering the Senate race with a disadvantage despite media pundits arguing that higher turnout in presidential election years should benefit Ross. Although Five Thirty Eight gave Clinton the slight edge to defeat Trump in North Carolina, Trump s was able to carry the state with a modest performance. Although Real Clear Politics had Burr winning by an average of 2%, that was certainly below the 5.7% final result. In a three way race between Trump, Clinton, and Johnson, Trump was predicted to win North Carolina by about 1%. The actual results, however, showed Trump winning by about 4%. Although this paper is focusing on the Senate race, it s certainly important to note the impact that a presidential candidate can have on the electoral map, particularly ... After Bloody Sunday , he sent a letter the Tsar of Russia saying, The innocent blood of workers, their wives and children, lies forever between thee. In Doctor Zhivago, Laura s fiancГ© changes his name from Pasha to Strelnikauf and becomes a leader of the uprising too. Gapon and Strelinkauf are quite similar in their actions and beliefs. Nine years after the Bloody Sunday Massacre , Russia becomes involved with World War One. In the movie, there is a scene where Russian troops are marching through Moscow and the town s people are cheering for them. During this scene, the narrator describes how when he entered the war, the party gave him the job the recruit troops. The Bolsheviks believed that the troops fighting in the war would soon become tired a weary, and would be easily convinced to come join the party. Pain is a complex interaction involving sensory, emotional and behavioural factors, so its definition and treatment must include these aspects. Could be sluggish to grind through the known levels. Example Here is a good example of a Hollandish collection we played lately. Notice, we began on 2 (you can multiple the essential series by whatever you want, so 1,3,5,7,9 becomes 2,6,10,14,18 etc. This method can be an example of a poor development system like the Martingale or D Alembert, therefore you boost your wagers size following a damage is manufactured by you. However, there are several differences, too. The very first thing you should know about this interesting system is that the development it uses is determined by what size your initial guess is. Presuming you guess ?1 to start out with it appears the following: 1,3,5,7,9 For larger original bets, double it simply. A starting guess of ?2 would give you2,6,10,14,18 Like other negative development systems, when you make a profitable gamble you go back to the beginning again simply, so you will not be gambling with huge amounts of your winnings. This is one way other negative development system do work, however the big difference here s that you play each level of the Hollandish system 3 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 14. Taking a Look at Rosemary Rosemary has been used for centuries as a pain reliever and cooking supplement. But through time rosemary has been not only a name, but adapted to modern day medicine. Rosemary may even be the future aid to slow the progression of Alzheimer s disease. It could be the medicine of the future. Rosemary, or Rosmarinusofficinalis, was originally grown in the Mediterranean. However, there are many recordings of rosemaryin Egypt where they buried their dead with rosemary on their graves or in their tombs. Rosemary was also mentioned in Shakespeare, in Romeo and Juliet, Juliet wore rosemary throughout the entire story to foreshadow her death. And in Anzac day in Australia citizens are expected to wear rosemary in honor of their dead ancestors (2014 Monterey Bay Spice Company). Aside from rosemary s obvious symbolism for death it also symbolizes memory. Shakespeare mentioned rosemary once again in Hamlet, but this time speaking of it out of an aid for remembrance. In Latin rosemary is Ros Maris, which means dew of the sea because of its growth near water and in Spainit is called Romero. The reasoning behind rosemary s name is because if the story once told about a Mediterranean woman who, in hopes to hide her baby from King Herod, hid under a rosemary bush when she attempted to flee to Egypt. The woman s name was Mary and rosemary was considered a rose bush. In the Middle Ages rosemary was also burnt in the homes of many because of its foretold ability to ward ... This section contains information about the implementation of the SDN switch core, interconnection of multiple SDN switches with the SDN controller (PowerPC) and the attacker nodes (Microblaze). The main functionality of the SDN switch is to modify packet header fields based on the flow table and forward it to the next port(s). The SDN controller is responsible for programming the flow table in each switch and monitor these switches to observe each packet flow. The Microblaze processor, acting as attacker nodes plays the role of an outside network and transmits packets at different programmable rates to the SDN switch network using an array of packet drivers. The big picture showing the connection between different components is given in Figure 3.1. The chapter is divided into two main sections. In Vygotsky s concept, zone of proximal development he explains that it is the distance between a child s developmental level, which is determined by independent problem solving and the level of potential development as determined through problem solving under adult guidance (Vygotsky, 1978, p174). This conceptis highly used in education and in classrooms. For example, I work with a student who is eighteen years of age and has intellectual disabilities. During our morning routine he enjoys working on puzzles. He has a difficult time putting the puzzle together so I help him with clues and or prompt him to the puzzle piece that fits. He moves onto a new puzzle once I no longer have to give him clues or prompts. As I have tracked his progress he has needed less prompt than he did three months ago. The goal of this concept is that, as an adult collaborates with a child to help them move from where they are to where they should be with help by accomplishing the exercise through prompts, clues, modeling, and etc. Bandura has studied self efficacy, which is the extent or strength of one s belief in one s own ability to complete tasks and reach goals. Self efficacy can affect all types of behaviors like academics, social and recreational. A child might have the ability to accomplish a task, but if they do not feel like they are capable of doing so, then they may fail or may not attempt the task. • 22. Marine Mammal Bycatch Essay Throughout the years, marine mammal bycatch has continued to be a growing concern due to a steady increase in mammal mortality rates. Mike Gaworecki mentions in his article that during this past month the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration initiated a rule limiting seafood imports from different countries that do not meet the United States new bycatch standards. Bycatch is a term that means catching unwanted species when intending to fishfor a different type of species. On a daily basis multiple dolphins, whales, and other unwanted animals are being captured because of inappropriate or ill suited forms of netting and traps. By implementing this rule the United States government hopes to prevent and reduce future cases of inappropriate capture. NOAA claims that they feel this is necessary because they want to enforce more restrictions on fishery related marine mammal deaths, while influencing other countries to improve on their fishingmethods. The reason for this sudden ruling was because several conservation groups joined together to sue the American government for lack of improvement throughout the years on fishery imports from other countries. By losing this ruling, the United States government has been forced to change their standards in order to support a previous act they made in 1972, The Marine Mammal Protection Act. This act originally provided protection for all marine mammals and included their protection of population sustainability. Over the years, the government had failed to continue this protection with countries that they imported seafood supply from and thus led to stricter regulations. Definitions Of Family In Kurdistan Family in Kurdistan In this essay, I will be exploring an essential word that can be understood or elucidated in various ways based on three perceptions, which is Family. The word family is defined as a group consisting of one or two parents, their children and close relations according to Oxford dictionary. However, the word family is described differently bases on the people s educational level in Kurdistan. Firstly, among the educated or modernized members of the community family is defined as the source in which they gain their respect and pride. Moreover, this class of the community is either less or not patriarchal, and all of the family members have the same rights without exceptions. On the other hand, while the majority of Kurdistan s population has a low educational background, therefore the uneducated portion of our society defines family as several relatives in a house that is mostly led by a male, and moral values are considered to be related to females. In contrast to all, I believe that family does not relate only to blood relatives or living things. Instead, family can relate to the people and things that get along and are based on each other, therefore, one loses its value in the absence of the other. Hence, in this ...
