Scholars are often encouraged to be public intellectuals – to ‘go online’ and engage with diverse audiences. Yet, scholars’ online activities appear to be rife with tensions, dilemmas, and conundrums. In this presentation, I discuss the major tensions and challenges scholars face when engaging networked publics and highlight some uncomfortable realities of being a public scholar. Evangelizing public and networked scholarship without acknowledging the existence of tensions is detrimental to the field and misleading to the scholars who may be considering becoming more networked, more public, and more “digital.” Individual scholars and institutions, both networked and otherwise need to evaluate the purposes and functions of scholarship and take part in devising systems that reflect and safeguard the values of scholarly inquiry.

Converged Learning: the spectrum of technology-mediated learningCristo Leon
New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), a four year polytechnic research university in the United States utilized a participatory strategic planning process to implement an innovative approach to the modes of delivery for instruction that exist between face to face and online instruction. NJIT defines the spectrum of integration of online and on-ground instruction as Converged Education. This spectrum allows students to either participate face to face, join remotely through real-time video conferencing technology (synchronously), or watch classroom instruction asynchronously. The article opens with a general background of NJIT's approach to the new idea of converged instructional delivery. Then the process for defining and clarifying the terms and conceptions of the various modes to be adopted is presented. Finally, the resulting implementation of the new policy and its reflection in course offerings is shown and discussed
Tying it Together: Three Essays on Knowledge, Entrepreneurial Action, and Ins...Mike Provance
This dissertation addresses two questions that emerge from this phenomenon: 1)
How do new ventures contend with the forces of institutionalization in their processes of
entrepreneurial action, and 2) how do these processes affect growth (at both firm and
regional levels of analysis)? The study develops theory more holistically around the
interaction of institutions and entrepreneurs and then uses it to undertake an empirical study
with simulation to investigate these questions from regional and venture levels of analysis.
The conceptual model is presented using entrepreneurial business model choice in the
microgeneration industry as an explanatory context. Informal and formal institutional
environments interact with socio-institutional factors to shape the decision-making of
entrepreneurs when choosing business models, but these choices and the actions that result

from them lead to shifts in the socio-institutional environment of the industry and over time
effect changes in informal institutional layers that span the economic environment more
broadly across regions and nations.

Purpose
The paper sets out a theoretical framework that has been developed to help understand the transitional experience of Chinese top up students at university. The framework has been developed from two psychosocial student development theories, Schlossberg’s transition theory (Schlossberg, 2005) and Chickering's identity development theory (Chickering & Reisser, 1993).
Since 2000, Chinese students account for the largest proportion of all international students worldwide. As a result, the transition of Chinese students in Western universities has become a popular research topic in the higher education field. However, most of the published studies consider Chinese students as a single category and do not distinguish between traditional entry and direct entry. This work will look specifically at the transition experience of Chinese top up students.
Nature of Research
The paper outlines the initial stages of a PhD study. It will present the development of the conceptual framework for the study and the literature review.
Methodology
The study is a case study of Chinese students studying at UK universities. It will use the Portrait Methodology (Bottery et al, 2009). Individually written “portraits” will be used to show how each individual participant handles the issues students face in transition. The sample size will be approximately 15 students, they will be interviewed both prior to and after they have commenced studies at a uk university. It is intended to take samples from students at a university in north of England.
Main arguments
The transition process is considered to be a “stress coping” process. In particular, it is a cultural adjustment issue and can be considered to comprise three factors: language anxiety, social anxiety and the academic anxiety (Zhou & Todman, 2008; Liu, & Jackson, 2008).
Work on general student development considers a transition to be a developmental process consisting of moving in, moving through and moving out stages of each individual transition (Schlossberg, 2005). Chickering defines it as consisting of 7 vectors, which are stages of development of identity.
The theoretical framework takes the work on general student development and applies it to the transitional process. It synthesizes the work of existing student identity development theories into a process that looks at both temporal and identity development and applies it to the transitional development of top up Chinese students.

LAK19 - Towards Value-Sensitive Learning Analytics DesignBodong Chen
LAK19 Full Paper. Abstract: To support ethical considerations and system integrity in learning analytics, this paper introduces two cases of applying the Value Sensitive Design methodology to learning analytics design. The first study applied two methods of Value Sensitive Design, namely stakeholder analysis and value analysis, to a conceptual investigation of an existing learning analytics tool. This investigation uncovered a number of values and value tensions, leading to design trade-offs to be considered in future tool refinements. The second study holistically applied Value Sensitive Design to the design of a recommendation system for the Wikipedia WikiProjects. To proactively consider values among stakeholders, we derived a multi-stage design process that included literature analysis, empirical investigations, prototype development, community engagement, iterative testing and refinement, and continuous evaluation. By reporting on these two cases, this paper responds to a need of practical means to support ethical considerations and human values in learning analytics systems. These two cases demonstrate that Value Sensitive Design could be a viable approach for balancing a wide range of human values, which tend to encompass and surpass ethical issues, in learning analytics design.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
