Manner of articulation
Last week we have discussed about place of articulation. Beside tongue, lips, alveolar etc there is also an
airstream that affected when we produce a sound. This air stream movement is belonging to the
manner of articulation.
Stops and Continuants
Sounds that are stopped completely in the oral cavity for a brief period are called stops. When the
airstream continuous without complete interruption through the mouth opening, it’s called continuants.
We can divide stops into nasal stops and oral stops (plosive). The sounds [m], [n], [ŋ] are belong to nasal
stops and the sounds [p], [b], [t], [d], [k], [g] are oral stops. The sounds that belong to continuants are
[f], [v], [ð], [ ], [s], [z], [š], and [ž].
Aspirated and Unaspirated Sounds
Some sounds called as aspirated because it needs an extra puff of air. The unaspirated sound needs not
an extra puff of air. For example if you say the word pit and spit (pay attention to the [p]). There is a puff
air through our mouth when we said pit, this is called aspirated. The [p] in spit does not cause any puff.
We do not say it with puff. This [p] is called unaspirated.
Fricatives
Fricative happen by forcing breath out through a narrow space in the mouth with lips, teeth or tongue in
a particular position. [f] and [v] are labiodentals fricatives, [s] and [z] are alveolar fricatives. There are
also inter dental sounds such [ ] and [ð].
Affricatives
Some sounds are produced by a stop closure followed immediately by a slow release of the closure
characteristic of a fricative, these sounds are called affricatives. The voiceless and voiced affricatives nay
be symbolized as [t ] and [ ].
Liquids
There is some obstruction of the airstream in the mouth, but not enough to cause any real constriction
or friction. These sounds are called liquids.
Glides
Glides are transition sounds that are sometimes called semivowels. They are sonorants because like the
other sounds in this class the air is essentially unobstructed as it moves through the oral cavity.
