This document discusses place of articulation in phonetic and phonology. It describes the seven types of sounds produced by the movement and contact of the tongue, lips, and other vocal structures: bilabial, labiodental, dental, alveolar, palatal, velar, and glottal. Each type of sound is defined by where in the mouth its articulated, such as bilabial sounds being produced with the lips and alveolar sounds with the alveolar ridge. Examples are provided for each place of articulation, along with whether the sounds are voiced or voiceless. The document aims to explain the different places in the oral cavity where sounds are formed.

2.  Place of articulation
• The air pass through larynx it comes up and
out from mouth and nose

• the sound produced by place of tounge,
movement of tounge and lips

3.  Sounds
There are seven types of sound
1. Bilabial sound
2. Labiodental sound
3. Dental sound
4. Alveolar sound
5. Palatals sound
6. Velars sound
7. Glotal sound

4.  Bilabial sound
• when lower lip articulates with upper lip the sound are
produced is called bilabial sound
– For example
• initial sounds pat, bat ,world
• least sound tap ,nap ,lab
• [b] ,[p],[w],[m]
• voiced sound : [b],[w],[m]
• voiceless sound : [p]

5.  Labiodental sound
• when lower lip articulates with upper teeth the sound are
produced are called Labiodental sound
• For example
– initial sound victory , flower
– [f],[v],
– voiced sound : [v],
– voiceless sound : [f]

6.  Dental sound
• when tip of tounge touch is back of upper teeth the sound
is produced are called dental sound
– For example
• initial sound thin , thick , this , there
• [θ],[ծ]
– voiced sound : [ծ]
– voiceless sound : [θ]

7.  Alveolar sound
• these sound are formed / produced with the front part of
the tounge on the alveolar ridge
– For example
• initial sound top , dip , sit , zoo , na , ring
• [t] , [d] ,[s] , [z] , [n] , [l] , [r]
• voiced sound : [d],[z],[n],[l],[r]
• voiceless sound : [t],[s]

8.  Palatal sound
• Sound produced with tounge and the palate are called
palatal / alveo-palats
– For example
• initial sound choose , shoes , charch and middle sound treasure ,
pleasure
• [tᶋ] , [ᶋ] , [ᵹ] , [ᶁᵹ] , [j]
» voiced sound : [ᵹ] , [ᶁᵹ] , [j]
• voiceless sound : [tᶋ] , [ᶋ]

9.  Velar sound
• sound produced with back of tounge against velum / soft
plate are called velar
– For example
• kite , gun , ping , pong
• [ᶄ] , [ᶃ] , [ᶇ]
• voiced sound : [ᶃ] , [ᶇ]
• voiceless : [ᶄ]

10.  Glottal sound
• when the glottis open and their no manipulation of the air
passing out of the mouth is called glottal dound
• for example
– house , who , [h]
– voiceless sound : [h]
