- 4. IDENTIFICATION FEATURES Medium size mammal Large linear ears about the same length as the head with brown tips.
- 5. IDENTIFICATION FEATURES- A very short tail which is dark brown on top and white underneath Fur is of grey colour
- 6. IDENTIFICATION FEATURES( CONT..) Often seen disappearing down burrows. Rabbits are herbivorous eating grass, root, vegetables and crops. They can be found in the wider countryside anywhere they can burrow, especially adjacent to food sources. They are normally nocturnal but will come out in daylight if they are disturbed if they are disturbed or on long summer days
- 7. OTHER IDENTIFICATION CLUES- 1. BURROWS- Rabbits make their burrows in most substrates so long as there is deep enough soft levels. Burrows often have very short grass near them where the rabbit have grazed the grass. They often have rabbit droppings near them or in the entrance.
- 8. OTHER IDENTIFICATION CLUES-(CONT..) 2. DROPPINGS- Being herbivorous, rabbits produce lots of droppings. They are yellow, brown or green in colour and are small and round almost perfectly sphere shaped about 10mm in diameter. They are often found in piles occasionally singularly. They small sweet.
- 9. RABBIT BREED IDENTIFICATION We basically identify breed in 4 types- First type- FUR (It is long or short?) Second type- shape Third type – size Fourth type - colour
- 10. FIRST TYPE- FUR If it is over two inches in length, your rabbit has wool. The bunnies that have wool are usually American fuzzy loops or jersey woollies. Larger bunnies with longer wool are angoras. If rabbit have very short fur, just over a half inch in length. Is it extremely soft to the touch, if so check out the- rex breeds If rabbit has wool around its ears and normal length fur on the body- Lionhead
- 11. SECOND TYPE- SHAPE Short, thick, round ears- Netherlands dwarf Long legs with a snaky body carried high in an arch- English spot and fan. Very long but heavy body, with flat shoulders- Flemish giant or another semi arch breed.
- 12. THIRD TYPE- SIZE If weights between 2 and 4 pounds at maturity, it is probably dwarf breed of some type such as the polish, Holland, lop, Netherlands dwarf, mini rex or Britannia petite. Himalayans are also around 4 pounds, though they are not dwarfs.
- 13. THIRD TYPE- SIZE Breeds that weight 5 to 7 pounds include the Dutch, mini lop and Havana. The next size up is the “commercial” type. This is a large group that includes breeds weighing to 12 pounds, such as the New Zealand, satin ,Californian and champagne d’ argent. Any rabbit over 12 pounds is considered a giant, giant breed include the Flemish, giant chinchilla and French lop.
