Manifest Destiny was the 19th century belief that American settlers were destined to expand across North America from the Atlantic to the Pacific coast. This document discusses maps from 1816 and 1872 that depict the United States stretching from coast to coast, even though the land was not fully settled or controlled at those times. The 1816 mapmaker John Melish justified drawing the map this way by arguing it was desirable to present the country's full probable extent and that the mind finds satisfaction in its westward limits.
