Information
• Mobile ad hoc networks are infrastructure less networks where node
can move freely.
• One node direct communicate with another if they are within radio
communicate range.
• A node can simultaneously serve both as source to destination of a
message and as a relay for Other message.
• A massage traverses the network by being relayed from one node to
another until it reaches its destination.
What is MANETs
• It is an infrastructure less IP based network of mobile and wireless
machine nodes connected with radio. In operation, the nodes of a
MANET do not have a centralized administration mechanism.
• It is known for its routable network properties where each node act as a
“router” to forward the traffic to other specified node in the network.
History
• ‘Ad-hoc’ Latin word means ‘for this’ or for this only.
• Mobile ad-hoc networks could be categorized into the first, second,
and the third generation.
 First Generation (PRNET) (1972-1980):
• Packet radio networks was the first ad-hoc network system.
• Use radio frequency technology to transmit and receive data.
• Ad hoc networks were the PRNET sponsored
by DARPA(Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency).
History
 Second Generation (SURAN) (1980-1990):
• Known as Survival Adoptive Radio Network (SURAN).
• Developed : Global mobile information Systems & Near term
Digital Radio (NTDR)
 Third Generation (1990-onwards):
• Known as commercial ad-hoc network systems.
• Bluetooth was first introduced in 1998.
• Eight devices can communicate with each other in a small
network.

Working of MANETs
1. Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs)
2. Intelligent vehicular ad hoc networks (InVANETs)
3. Internet Based Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (iMANET)
Types of MANETs
Challenges in Securing MANETs
Initial Routing

Challenges in Securing MANETs
Initial Routing
before attack
Data Packets
• Data packets received in
one place of the network
and replay them in another
place
• Attacker can attack the
Routing Algorithm
Challenges in Securing MANETs
Most packets will be
routed to the Attacker
The Attacker can drop
packets or forward
packets to avoid
detection
Challenges in Securing MANETs
MANET Application
• Military services
• Emergency services
• Commercial environment
• Home and enterprise networking
• Education
• Entertainment
• Sensor network
Future scope
• Future application of it would be implementing it in the farmers field
effectively. So that the farmers could examine the different climatic
conditions from their respective places.
Advantages
• Provide access to information and services regardless of geographic area
• Network can be setup any place and at any time
• Works without any infrastructure
• Wireless communication
• Highly mobility
• Small and light equipment
Disadvantages
• Limited resources
• Limited physical security
• Lack of authorization facilities
• Security protocols for wired networks can not works ad-hoc network
Conclusion
• In this presentation, we discuss MANET and its advantages,
application, challenges, security and various types of Mobile ad hoc
network for efficient and effective communication between the
mobile nodes participating in a dynamically established network of
nodes.
