The car has been a mainstay of American culture for about...
The car has been a mainstay of American culture for about a century. The idea of a car in every garage
has been around for almost as long. Teenagers view getting their driver s license as a rite of passage
and our cross country highways support the notion of the Great American Road Trip. We drive our
cars everywhere. And after all these years, doing so has become a problem. [1] Over the last century,
the Earth s average temperature has risen by 1.4 °F. Over the next century, that average is expected to
rise an additional 2 11.5 °F. This change has shown a strong correlation with the increase of
greenhouse gases emitted by the burning of fossil fuels for energy and transportation. In fact, every
year, human activity releases over ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
[4] Ethanol is a renewable energy source that can be produced domestically. It is produced from
various plant materials such as corn, sugar cane and some types of grasses. Ethanol combustion will
produce less greenhouse gas production and there is little extra cost to make vehicles able to run on
high ethanol content fuel. While most of the gasoline used in the U.S. contains up to 15% ethanol, the
more environmentally friendly E85 (or flex fuel) contains up to 83% ethanol. Unfortunately, this type
of fuel can be problematic. Ethanol has a lower energy content than regular gasoline, which results in
cars getting anywhere between 15 25% less miles per gallon (MPG). Furthermore, although E85 is
generally cheaper per gallon, the lower energy content makes it slightly more expensive in terms of
cost per mile. Finally, the fueling stations for E85 are generally located in the Midwest, which limits
the widespread use of this type of energy alternative. [4] Biodiesel is another possible alternative. It
can be produced from vegetable oils, animal fats, and recycled restaurant grease. Some of its
advantages are that it is biodegradable, is generally safer to handle and it produces significantly less
carbon dioxide emissions (up to 15% less). However, it too has problems. Similar to ethanol fuels, it
has a lower energy content, which results in lesser MPG for cars. Fuels that contain a high percentage
of biodiesel are also not

Human Law Vs. Divine Law
Human Law vs. Divine Law
Morality is principles that determines the distinction between right and wrong action, or good and bad
behavior. There is also a link that being moral should be determined by either human law or divine
law. The play Antigone , by Sophocles, shows the complexity of this certain concept of morality.
Antigone must determine whether she should defy King Creon s law in order to bury her brother,
Polynices, or reject her own religious beliefs in order to maintain in the King s good graces. At the
same time, King Creon also has to determine what is right and wrong; he must decide if he should
imprison and give the death sentence to Antigone for defying the law, or let her go free because of
divine law. The issues shown in Antigone further exemplify the complexity of which law is right and
if Antigone s and Creon s actions were justifiable. Should there solely be one person to create law? Or
should there be a consideration for people that prefer divine law? According to Katrin Beushausen,
Antigone was first staged around 442 BCE. It was a time of peace for Athens. Unfortunately, conflict
with Sparta would again break out ten years later in the Peloponnesian War. It is important to realize
that, at this point, democracy was not only an ambitious political system under which the life of the
Athenian citizens was organized according to the idea of equality, but also represented an ideological
instrument of power in Athens s pursuit of hegemony

The Leadership Of Paula Wilson
This paper will evaluate the leadership of Paula Wilson, President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO)
of Valley Community Healthcare (VCH, formerly Valley Community Clinic). Established in North
Hollywood in 1970, VCH s mission is to provide culturally sensitive, high quality primary care and
integrated health services to those in need, regardless of their ability to pay (Valley Community
Healthcare [VCH], 2014). Its services include primary care, including preventive services and
screening and treatment for chronic conditions; women s health care and family planning; prenatal
services; pediatrics; teen health care and health education; optometry; dental services; HIV testing,

Department of Health Human Services, 2015). These provisions were aimed at providing new
protections for health insurance consumers, lowering the cost and improving the quality of health care,
and increasing access to health insurance and affordable care. While many of the ACA s provisions
had implications for community health centers, the ones that impacted them most directly were the
expansion of Medicaid and availability of subsidized health insurance through exchanges and the
creation of the Community Health Center Fund, which allocated $11 billion in new funding through
fiscal year 2015 for operations, capital projects, and expansion of services to enable community health
centers to serve an anticipated 20 million newly insured patients (National Association of Community
Health Centers, n.d.; Valley Community Healthcare, 2015).
For VCH, preparing for implementation of the ACA focused primarily on expanding its operations and
increasing its patient capacity, and this is the challenge I will focus on in evaluating Ms. Wilson s
leadership (P. Wilson, personal communication, June 5, 2015). Recognizing that this was a time of
unprecedented change in the organization s history and in her tenure as its leader, Ms. Wilson
immersed herself in learning about change management and the tools she would need to lead the
organization through its expansion. The

Optimal Dh And Temperature Conditions Lab Report
Optimal pH and Temperature Conditions Comparative studies show that the optimum pH of LDH
from rabbit muscle ranges from pH 6.2 to 7.8 [6]. A pH rate profile graph in a study by Fritz [6]
reflects the results obtained in Figure 1, where the optimum pH was found to be 7.5 for LDH extracted
from rabbit muscle. This is further supported by the optimal pH of rabbit muscle LDH obtained by
another study [7], in which the pH is determined to be 7.5. Thus the results obtained in Figure 1 fall
consistent with literature values. In a study by Buhl et al., the optimal temperature of LDH from
skeletal muscle of aa human was 37oC[4], suggesting that denaturation characteristics of the enzyme
would be observed beyond this temperature condition [1]. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The low Vmax could be due to an incomplete reaction. However, despite the large difference in Vmax
between experimental and literature values, Figure 3 reflects similar data obtained in similar studies
[9]. Michaelis Menten graphs depicted by Figure 4 and Figure 5 show that all concentrations of oxalic
acid (0M, 0.01M and 0.03M) and oxamic acid (0M, 0.0200M and 0.0600M) ) seemingly saturate at
the highest lactate concentration which was 95mM. In both figures, LDH saturates the fastest in the
absence of inhibitors, followed by 0.01M oxalic acid and 0.0200M oxamic acid, and 0.03M oxalic
acid and 0.0600M oxamic acid having the slowest reaction rate respectively shown in Figure 4 and
Figure 5. These results reflect the Michaelis Menten graphs reproduced by experiments under similar
conditions as explained by Powers et al [9]. As predicted, Km and Vmax values obtained from the
Michaelis Menten graphs in Figure 4 and Figure 5 do not correspond with Km and Vmax values
obtained in the Lineweaver Burk plot of LDH in Figure 3. The Vmax obtained in Figure 4 and Figure
5 were both 10.6µM/min in the absence of inhibitor whereas the Vmax in the absence of inhibitor was
0.34 µM/min in Figure 3. Lineweaver Burk plots allow for an accurate derivation of an enzyme s Km
and Vmax through an extrapolation of reciprocal values as opposed to the Michaelis Menten graph
which indicates a direct correlation of an enzyme s substrate

Pacific and Australian Plate Boundary
The boundary between the Pacific Plate and Australian Plate is marked by volcanism, earthquakes,
and different and unique topography. The border of these two plates is composed of a mix of
transform and convergent boundaries along the Eastern edge of the Australian plate, with both
divergent and convergent boundaries along the Northern edge. The Australian Plate is moving in a
North to Northeastern direction at a speed of approximately 7 cm /year (although the continent of
Australia only shifts by approximately 5.6 cm/year) [1][7]. Meanwhile, the Pacific Plate moves
towards the Northwest at a speed of also approximately 7 cm/year (at least the speed of the movement
of Hawaii). [7] Each plate subducts beneath the other at some points along the boundary, which
contributes to some of the different volcanism and topographical features along the plate boundary.
One of the major features of the Western edge of the Australian/Pacific plate boundary is the Alpine
Fault. This is a transform or strike slip fault, running approximately 600 miles up the South Island of
New Zealand. The Alpine Fault is considered to be a visible, on land boundary of the two constituent
plates, and also marks the transition from a transform to convergent boundary. The Alpine Fault also
ruptures, which leads to seismic activity as well as considerable horizontal movement, up to 30 m
every 1000 years. This horizontal movement causes

Essay on Police Brutality and the Use of Force
There are very few careers with as high demands for an ethical standard as law enforcement. Although
there are many careers, which require a dedication to doing the right thing, it is undeniable that there
is a tremendous degree of responsibility and expectations placed on the police officer. While most
professions allow for careful thought and planning, a police officer is often thrust into a situation with
little advanced intelligence about what is occurring. Often an officer is involved in a situation which
has the potential to turn violent. Relying on training allows the officer to successfully navigate a
variety of situations. After a few years on the job, even the rookie police officer is aware that they live

The application of force is often considered ethically neutral it can, under a variety of circumstances,
constitute an abuse of authority. The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) defines the
use of force as that amount of effort required by police to compel compliance from an unwilling
subject (Police Use of Force in America 2001, n.d, p. 1). The IACP defines the use of excessive force
as the application of an amount and/or frequency of force greater than that required to compel
compliance from a willing or unwilling subject (Police Use of Force in America 2001, n.d, p. 1).
According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics (n.d.), in 2005 19% of U.S. residents 16 and over had
contact with a police officer. Of these contacts, 9 in 10 felt the police acted properly. During these
contacts with approximately 43.5 million persons, an estimated 1.6% had force used against them or
threatened to be used (Bureau of Justice Statistics, n.d.). A study by the International Association of
Chiefs of Police (as cited in Police Use of Force in America 2001, n.d.) shows that force was used 3.6
times for every 10,000 (police/citizen) encounters this suggests that force was not used in 99% of all
cases. Statistical data for excessive force is lacking as there is no standard measure in place. Given
these figures it is safe to suggest that

John Stuart Mill s Utilitarianism
Happiness in terms of logic is considered to be a vague expression, meaning it has a wide range of
interpretations, as well as having no clear meaning. John Stuart Mill, an English philosopher, based
his controversial sentiments of happiness on Jeremy Bentham s utilitarianism, believing that goods are
the means to greatest happiness for the greatest number of peoples. Epicurus, an Ancient Greek
philosopher, who similarly encouraged people to follow his pleasure based philosophy to obtain
happiness. Unlike Mill, Epicurus philosophy is based on individualistic hedonism, which often may
seem more practical and acceptable. Although, Mill s utilitarianism is indeed a form of social
hedonism rather than individual pleasure seeking, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, unlike Jeremy Bentham, the father of utilitarianism, Mill was able to clarify
misinterpretations and controversies by additionally incorporating his own social, political and moral
theories that seemed fit with the philosophy.
Epicureanism belongs in the same hedonistic category as Mill s utilitarianism, but unlike
utilitarianism, Epicurean principles are not commonly used in American government and politics.
From afar, Epicureanism may seem the most practical and relatable because one may look and assume
that it is simply about indulging in pleasures as long as it makes you happy. However, that is a naive
interpretation, as Epicureanism promotes pleasure, but only the natural and necessary ones. Along
with only following the natural and necessary pleasures, it also highlights the importance of
suppressing desires that cause one to long for pleasures that aren t necessary.
In Epicurus Principal Doctrines, he writes, on a basis of power sufficient to afford supports and of
material prosperity arises in most genuine form the security of a private life withdrawn from the
multitude (2), meaning that wealth should not be a good that contributes to happiness. This may be
relatable and useful for certain individuals who devalue material goods, however, this would not be
plausible for the American

The Effects Of Video Games On Today s Youth
Introduction Video games have been one of the most popular sources of entertainment for quite some
time. Video games have changed the entertainment industry and is now a billion dollar industry. The
industry has also effected society. Of course, there are some benefits of using video games, but there
are also many negative effects of the use of video games, especially on today s youth. According to
NPD, ninety one percent of children from the age of two to seventeen play video games (Camp, 2011).
In terms of the population of the youth, that is nearly sixty four million children (Camp, 2011).
According to Dino Grandoni, children play from one to three hours of video games per day (Grandoni,
2014). With these facts, it is obvious that the use of video games will have some physical, mental, and
social effects on the child, especially if the child becomes addicted to playing video games. The
consequences of playing these games in an addictive manner includes physical issues, psychological
issues, as well as issues connecting with people in the real world. Physical Problems Of course video
games can be fun or even relaxing. However, is playing as a fictional character in a fictional realm
worth the physical problems that can arise from constantly playing? Playing video games for too long
puts stress on the body s immune system, muscles, and even the brain (video game addiction). Also,
the addiction of video games can cause a child to maintain poor hygiene habits as well as poor

Language Identification of Individual Words with Joint...
Within a multilingual automatic speech recognition (ASR) system, knowledge of the language of
origin of unknown words can improve pronunciation modelling accuracy. This is of particular
importance for ASR systems required to deal with code switched speech or proper names of foreign
origin. For words that occur in the language model, but do not occur in the pronunciation lexicon, text
based language identification (T LID) of a single word in isolation may be required. This is a
challenging task, especially for short words. We motivate for the importance of accurate T LID in
speech processing systems and introduce a novel way of applying Joint Sequence Models to the T LID
task. We obtain competitive results on a real world 4 language task: for our best JSM system, an F1
value of 97.2% is obtained, compared to a F1 value of 95.2% obtained with a state of the art Support
Vector Machine (SVM). Words, phrases and names are often used across language boundaries in
multilingual settings. Especially for minority languages, such {it code switching} with a dominant
language can become an intrinsic part of the language itself~cite{modipaimplications}. Automatic
speech recognition (ASR) systems are required to deal with various types of words of foreign origin.
For example: automated call routing systems or voice driven navigation systems often process proper
names and foreign words that tend to have pronunciations that are difficult to
predict~cite{reveil2010improving}. These

Hammond s View Of Sexuality As A Social Construction
I think that analyzing sexuality as a social construction, and importantly as one that is fluid evolving
with and responding to the social terrain it is operating within is necessary because it allows for
reflection and revision. I agree with Hammond s sentiment that through erasure black women have
lost the ability to articulate any conception of their sexuality (133, Hammonds), however I believe it
goes beyond a loss of ability. Hammonds claims that not only are people of color often excluded from
spaces that discuss the politics of sexuality, but that when they are granted space to speak, a queer
writer of color may find that defining himself gay is not of the utmost importance (129). That is to say
that the intersection of race and

Analysis Of Maxine Hong Kingston s Woman Warrior
Relationship honoring is the backbone of Eastern Asian cultures which conflicts with the western
respect for individual freedom and the journey to personal discovery as defined by Susan Cain, author
of a nonfiction book published in 2012, Quiet. Maxine Hong Kingston explores this cultural clash in
her 1976 memoir, Woman Warrior, though following an insecure young daughter of a Chinese
immigrant family who increasingly becomes independent as she is influenced by American Culture.
Kingston uses Maxine s journey to portray that in a world that values individualism, people who are
raised according to foreign traditions of conformity often discover that their parents are not capable
mentors. This struggle eventually causes them break away from their parent s orthodox ideals.
Kingston delves into Maxine s analysis of American and Chinese language semantics to illustrate her
perception of the two conflicting cultures. Ever since Maxine was learning how to read aloud, she
questioned the value systems between both cultures, and the differences between them. To her, they
were conspicuous. When struggling to read, she points out, Chinese had 7 strokes full of intricacies
(Kingston 166). These intricacies stemmed from China s village structure, in which villagers ...

The Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu Essay
The protagonist of the book The Tale of Genji, was a factious character named Genji who was
certainly a legendary figure. His countless intimate relationships with a variety of women were truly
unbelievable by modern standards. It is easy for the readers to notice the amorous character of Genji.
However, behind this certain image, there were surely some other noticeable traits of him through his
affairs with some of the important women in his life. For instance, he was brave and treated the
women he loved with sincere and courtesy; moreover, when it came to women, he was sort of an
unrealistic perfectionist. Nonetheless, sometimes he could also be selfish for his own interest without

Eventually, those women would be sadly abandoned and forgotten as time passed by. However, that
was not the case for Genji. Genji could easily fall for a woman in a short period of time. However, at
least at the moment, he genuinely cared about those women and sometimes felt sad for them as he
could not make any commitments to them. His relationship with the lady Sixth Avenue is an example.
After Genji s intense emotion for Sixth Avenue decreased, he still thought of her from time to time,
wondering if she was getting on well enough. Even though he knew that his wife Aoi s death was
partially caused by Sixth Avenue, he still would not forget about her. Of course, he was mad at her at
first, but as time went by, he gradually let go of the rage and started feeling bad for her since she was
all alone. He even attempted several times to visit her and ask for forgiveness as he often neglected
her feelings. Sixth Avenue rejected him at first because she decided to break off all relations with
Genji. Nonetheless, she was moved by his genuineness eventually and agreed to accept his apology
with an open heart. The incident served as an example of the fact that Genji was truly a genuine man,
through he was amorous.
However, apart from his positive characters, Genji sometimes could

Neat People vs. Sloppy People appears in Britt s collection show and tell. Mingling humor with

desk looks exactly the same, primarily because the sloppy person is meticulously creating new piles of
paper with new headings and scrupulously stopping to read all the old book catalogs before he threw
them away. A neat person would just bulldoze the desk. Neat people are bums and clods at heart. They
have cavalier attitude toward possession, including the family heirlooms. Everything is just another
dust catcher to them. If anything collects dust, it s got to go and that s that. Neat people will toy with
the idea of throwing the children out of the house just to cut down on the clutter. Neat people don t

can sit down and watch the rasslin on TV. Neat people operate on two unvarying principles: Never

has immediate use and, finding none, throw it in the trash. Neat people especially

Jane Austen s Northanger Abbey Essay
Jane Austen s Northanger Abbey
Jane Austen s Northanger Abbey is essentially the coming of age story of Catherine Morland, a
sympathetic yet naïve young girl who spends some time away from home at the impressionable age of
seventeen. As Catherine matures in the town of Bath and at Northanger Abbey, she learns to forgo
immature childhood fantasies in favor of the solid realities of adult life, thus separating falsehood
from truth. This theme is expressed in a couple of ways, most obviously when Catherine s infatuation
with Gothic novels causes her to nearly ruin her relationship with Henry Tilney: her imagination
finally goes too far, and she wrongly suspects General Tilney of murdering his late wife. The theme is

Soon after her own arrival in Bath, Catherine is followed by her brother James and Isabella s brother
John Thorpe. At the initial meeting with the boys, Catherine is mistaken on two different points, still
being ignorant in her perceptions of other people. Although slightly thrown off by John s manners,
Catherine is unable to formulate her own negative opinion of him, too affected by the opinions of
Isabella and James, and her judgment was further brought off by Isabella s assuring her...that John
thought her the most charming girl in the world (Austen 48). For Catherine, it is easier and more
natural to accept the opinions of someone like Isabella, a mentor figure. Also, in the same scene,
Catherine makes the assumption that her brother James has journeyed so far on purpose to see me
(49). Catherine hastily jumps to this false conclusion, not having the experience to detect James
continuous questions and compliments of Isabella as a sign of his true motives for coming to town: to
visit the prettiest girl in Bath (49).
At this point in the story the intense attachment between Catherine and Isabella begins to slowly
deteriorate. Thus far the two girls have been inseparable, but although Isabella promises at that

Applying An Analytical Model Of A Plane Wall
Abstract
To conduct a proper analysis of the 1 D transient conduction in a plane wall we must take the
necessary mathematical procedures to obtain an analytical model that accurately represents the heat
transfer that occurs. The equation must accurately model a plane wall that has a thickness L, is well
insulated on one side, but is still vulnerable to convection on the other side. In order to complete the
model, one must scale the problem in terms of both a length scale and a time scale to transform the
variables to a dimensionless form that allows for a set of solutions that can be narrowed down to the
simple parameter, Bi=hL/k.
Introduction Mathematical Model
This analysis looks into the phenomena of 1 D transient conduction in a plane wall of thickness L that
is insulated on one side and subject to convection on the other. The conduction is governed by the
differential heat equation: u_t=∝u_xx (1)
Here, u signifies the temperature of the entire body and ∝ signifies the thermal diffusivity.
Furthermore, the differential heat equation above must respect the following boundary conditions: u_x
|_(x=0)=0
ku_x |_(x=L)=h(u| T_∞) u|_(t=0)=T_i In the above boundary conditions, k represents a material
property commonly referred to as thermal conductivity, whereas T_i represents the initial temperature
throughout the wall. In this instance the flow conditions are such that they sustain constant

Soul Sisters Come On To My House Summary
In Soul Sisters, Come on to My House Susan Freire Korn argued in her book s introduction that her
purposes were to help people transmit from the state of being aware of the cultural variations and
differences, to a state of susceptibility and willingness to utterly embrace and value these variations in
cultures. This susceptibility was identified as: cultural sensitivity which was destined to help
employees within life and work environments to treat each other courteously, with respect and dignity
(Freire Korn, 2011).
Freire Korn in her book went further and stated that people need more than treating each other with
respect and dignity, but rather need a wider understanding, compassion, kindness, a profound
tolerance and acceptance of others. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Being enclosed, locked up inside cages and inner universes of stubbornness and inflexibility, hinder
ethnocentric individuals from seeing and viewing the world equally and reasonably. Hence, Cultural
relativists seek to understand the reason why individuals from another culture dress, speak or eat in

because for relativists, no culture is better or worse than another culture. With the advance of human
rights, adherence to ethnicity is not an imposition and compulsion where it became a matter of choice
(C.L. Khatri, 2005). It is important to resume that cultural relativism strives to promote an equal
vision and perception of all existing cultures and cultural ideologies. Yet the role of communicative
skills and languages is pivotal to accomplish the cultural interaction and understanding. Accordingly,
since the use of English language dominated the globe, it can be used to maintain a relativist approach

memory is confused by the similarity, this means that this is how long term memory encodes. The first
study that Baddeley conducted was that he gave participants four trials at learning the order of a list of
words, he then used a 20 minute delay this was to remove the short term memory. The participants
were then asked to recall as many words as they could in the order they were in. He compared their
score in the 5th trial with the participants score in the 4th trial 20 minutes earlier this was to determine
how much the participants had forgotten. Baddeley accepted the fact that the participants who had to
remember words with similar meaning would find it harder than the participants who had to remember
words that rhymed. He understood this because he thought the LTM (long term memory) worked by
semantic encoding this means they would be confused by the similarity in the meanings, however, not
by the similarity of the sounds. Baddeley s results came back to not be as he was expecting and he
concluded that the participants STM (short term memory) was helping out their LTM, with the two
memory stores working together. To remove ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Summary Of Blood Relations By Sharon Pollock
Blood Relations by Sharon Pollock complicates my understanding of Canadian culture to the degree
of questioning the boundaries between justice and morality. Canadian culture is defined by the values
portrayed through the empowerment of minorities and the ability to empathize with others on the basis
of morality. These principles are used to promote positivity and equity founded on a system of justice.
I believe these values have been manipulated by Pollock to reveal a question of ethics in Canadian
culture.
Pollock uses the distribution of power to minorities as a platform to exploring the importance of
morality versus justice. Morality is defined as whether something is right or wrong and justice is
defined as what is deserved. Lizzie is

Compare And Contrast Hamal And Hildegarn
In ancient times, women were given away to be married or given to abbey s to be cared for at very
young ages. Some of these women grew to be just mothers and wife s, while others became great and
important women in society. Hildegard of Bingen and Gluckel of Hameln are two great examples of
such women in history. Hildegarn and Gluckel both grew up as any other normal little girl. Until the
day everything changed when they were given away. Hildegarn was eight years old when she was
turned over to an abbey in the Rhineland to be cared for. Gluckel was at the age of almost fourteen
years when her father betrothed her to be married to Chayim Hameln. At the age of fourteen, she
married him and started her family. Hildegarn grew up learning Latin and receiving a good education.
While she was a child, she started to have mystical visions. In middle age, her visions became more
dramatic. By the age of 42 everything became more clear to her when the heavens opened up to her.

Capitalism Vs Religion
Exam #3
Capitalism thrives in the United States in a manner different than anywhere else in the world. As time
passed, it became apparent that spending and creating secured the power it currently possesses. While
this country appears to be secular in the way it is regulated, it in actuality owes its economic success
to religion. Reality is, the notion of capitalism and the American work ethic is owed to Protestants,
despite the secular worldview Americans have held in more recent times. Weber argues that the
Protestant work ethic provided a foundation for the success of capitalism in the secular sphere of
collective society. The calling derived such practicality in terms of economics through its
individualistic approach to eternal salvation. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Worshippers of the faith were now more inclined to save and invest wisely in all their economic
endeavors. Because of the practicality implemented in their faith, the Protestants became committed to
practicing smarter tactics to obtain a place in Heaven. The role that these ideas played in the formation
of their economic success, was integral to not only their success, but the rise of capitalism in the
United States. The ideas that were derived from this faith soon became the spirit of capitalism. This
spirit was easily applicable to capitalism, and the practices and methods the Protestants developed
soon became more commonplace within collective society. The ascetic practices that were being
implemented in the United States were now integral to credit and value, which is a core belief of
Protestantism. However, despite the success that the United States now possessed due to the rise of
capitalism in their society, they reached a level of idleness in their spirit. By complying to economic
modesty, the average American worker was now trapped in an iron cage . This iron cage refers to the
over rationalization of the United States with their money. By becoming conscious of their actions and
aware of the result that followed, the workers spirit died a little. The calling soon enough became an
illusion that existed long ago in a different society, but is now

West Jest vs Air Canada Essay
How serious is the threat from conventional airlines that want to imitate the westjet culture? What
does it take to imitate organizational culture? Can Air Canada compete against westjet s employee
productivity and its relationship with its employees?
Ever since its establishment in 1996, WestJet has aimed to operate as a low cost carrier while
employing non unionized members in a unique organizational culture. In its simplest form this unique
organizational culture can be labeled as a labor managed firm. In a labor managed firm employees are
owners, and they are affected by the company s performance through profit sharing. Then it should not
be surprising that in labor managed firms, the employees can voice their opinions and actually ...

A labor force in its most basic form, through profit maximizing practices, must be minimized, due to
the cost associated with it, in order to drive up profit. And it is because of this outlook that WestJet has
managed to outperform their competition, for example Air Canada. This theory is in sync with the
findings of Jeffery Pfeffer in his 1995 paper Producing sustainable competitive advantage through the
effective management of people.
As described above, the organizational culture, the foundation of WestJet s success, is heavily
weighted on its people. Where as the competition, sees the workforce as a cost and aims to minimize
it, WestJet looks at their work force as an asset and an investment. Conventional airlines run their
business as any other company. They look out for the shareholder s best interest and do not pay the
slightest attention to their workforce. In WestJet s culture, the workforce consists of the shareholders
due to profit sharing and co operative environment. By nature capital managed firms will have a hard
time converting to labor managed firm. They will have to change a lot of rules and regulations that
governs their everyday operations. They will face a large number of opposition by their shareholders.
According to Fernandez Guadano (2009) even if they do manage to adopt similar practices as labor
managed firms, they will never be able to achieve the same rate of employee ownership and profit
sharing as their counterparts,

A revolution is taking place. Information Technology has quickly emerged as a significant field all
over the world. Computers are extremely versatile and finding their way into every business, industry
and research activity today. The uses of computers are diverse and encompass entertainment,
education, communication, problem solving, research, decision making and everything. The whole lot
will be merged to IT in the near future. The wired world of business, where technology, human talent,
and a new way of doing business make up to day s growing worldwide economy. The backbone of this
electronic commerce is the internet. While it s rapidly spreading there are also rapid changes in every
instance of time as addition of new sophisticated technologies and new standards etc.
Though communication technology is currently undergoing a massive revolution, these advances and
the accompanying benefits have not yet filtered down to those in developing nations with antiquated
and outdated technology. This project attempts to address this need by developing a system that
harnesses the power of the Internet, which is the most economical and yet most widely available and
accessible global network in existence.

The Changing Of Mind By Nicholas Carr
The Changing of Minds
The advancement of technology emblematizes humanity s intelligence and capacity to conceptualize
what has not been done before, expand humanity s capability, and strive to improve the place we
inhabit. We sometimes fear the advancement of technology because it s new and uncharted territory .
Technology undeniably and unarguably defines our world, and choosing to hide from technology and
the role it plays in our world, only hinders the leadership capabilities of those who will soon lead this
nation. Nicholas Carr, in Is Google Making Us Stupid? , describes how technology changes how we
think, and consequently, the way we learn and process new information.

It can be beneficial to allow us access to a wide variety of information we, otherwise, would not have.
However, we should also be careful to not develop an overdependence on technology. If we become
entirely reliant on technology, and remain incapable of doing tasks on our own, without understanding
the concepts and ideas we are making decisions with, then we are not leaders. We are simply a person
using a tool and hoping that we get the right outcome. If we learn how to properly manage the use of
technology, then we become a leader and a tactician, someone who knows both what they are doing
and how to use the technology at hand. The leader that is capable of that, will push the army forward
to fight the type of war our world is pushing towards. Maybe this technological advancement is, as
Carr argues, the one that has gone too far that will drain us of who we are and cause us to become
pancake people (Carr 580). But until we are able to determine whether or not the internet is as harmful
as it is believed to be, cadets need to learn how to effectively use technology to be prepared for the
world that we will enter into when we

Impact Of The Dov Charney Of American Apparel Industry
In business, ethics is categorized by a business s ability to follow moral standards and regulations.
Often businesses or CEO s make moves that are considered unethical like stealing money from the
company expenses or saying something in public that is inappropriate, resulting in backlash. An
example of an unethical CEO is Dov Charney of American Apparel. Its CEO is extremely unethical,
unlike the CEO of Starbucks, Howard Schultz, who is considered a very ethical CEO to a very ethical

to provide shelter and other necessities. Yet, humans do not comprehend that they also must consider
the animals and plants lifestyle. Nowadays, people do not recognize the damages they do to society.
As each year passes, each person s changes the way they think and contributes a domino effect. When
trees are cut down and other landmarks are used to build supermarkets or hotels, humans are taking

discusses what it means to be an Israelite or a Canaanite, and he highlights an instance in Joshua
where roles are reversed: a Canaanite becomes an Israelite and an Israelite becomes like a Canaanite.

Spina comments, She knows the king s mind. She even seems to anticipate where the king s men will
search for the Israelite spies, so she sends the spies into the hills. She also knows the mind of the
Canaanite people including what they know about Israel and what they most fear. Even as she is the
quintessential Canaanite, Rahab has been enlightened to the God of the Israelites. In the original
Hebrew she uses the name Yahweh, which is a more personal and very Israelite name for God. She
knows the Israelite conquer of Canaan is more than just militaristic, that it is ritualistic with holy
inspiration. Spina notes, Rahab knows that Yahweh your God is God in heaven above and on earth
below. The phrase God in heaven above is used by only three biblical figures: Moses, Solomon, and
Rahab. What a combination!
Rahab stands as a symbol of the temptations the Israelites will face because of the idols of Canaan.
(Think of the phrase whoring after idols used repeatedly in the Old Testament.) She, however, protects
the Israelite spies and, as evidenced by Joshua 6:25, is eventually assimilated into Israel. But Joshua
spared Rahab the prostitute, with her family and all who belonged to her, because she hid the men
Joshua had sent as spies to Jericho and she lives among the Israelites to this day. She becomes one of

With these numbers of schools that participate a lot of woman sports teams are not getting the equal
treatment they deserve. In 1972 the Congress passed an Educational Amendment stating that all
federally funded schools should not discriminate anybody by gender from playing sports. (History of
Title IX. 2011, September 13). The title 9 was made to give equality to all participants who are
playing for a school. Mainly for girls who were discriminated from playing sports. U.S Secretary of

3 Types Of State Legislatures
Felipe Lozano
The United States has based its political roots over certain rules, one of them being the separation of
powers between the federal government and the states. This rule gives every state certain liberty to the
states, such as choosing their own type of state legislature. In the United States, the state legislatures
have been chosen according to the commodities of each state, their necessities and other factors, such
as geographic region, population size, or area size. The comparison between the several options of
state legislatures can be observable through the level of professionalization that every state has
produced throughout the legislatorial period. There are three different types of legislature in the

For instance, the State Legislature of Texas, as a hybrid legislature, has proved both annual and
biennial sessions and budgets, but even then, it has been a challenge to achieve a great rate of passing
bills. Even when the Governor of Texas has the power to summon a special session; like 16 other
states, the rate of passing bills has been decreasing lower than 25% from the total of bills proposed
(Zelinski, 2017). Furthermore, the session length is the factor that engulfs the management of time
over legislatorial sessions. This control opens a possible influence over the political agenda of the
party in control over the legislature, where there is a potential advantage taken by the governors, thus
impacting state business and affairs. To illustrate this, the usual time of session for the North Dakota
legislature is sixty six days over a two year period, there would be a 0.78% increase in the state s
budget by the propositions of the governor (Kousser and Philips, 2009). In addition, the variation on
the amount of compensation for legislators has become a key factor over the professionalization level
throughout the states. For example, a lawmaker in Illinois would receive a base salary of $67,836 per
year and a per diem rate, per each day of session, of $111. On the other hand, a state lawmaker in
Idaho is going to receive $16,438 as a base salary and a per diem rate ranging from $25 to $122
(NCSL, 2014 State Legislator Compensation). Therefore, it is common to see that states where their
legislators are being paid higher salaries, such as in California, Pennsylvania or Illinois, are being
ranked at a higher level of professionalization, rather than part time legislature states, like New
Hampshire or Utah. As a factor of

Speaking of colors, you might want to evaluate whether you really need to stick with your brand

My Work Based Learning Is The Popular Gourmet Hamburger Chain
The Company Overview
Company Creation
My workplace and subsequently where I undertook my work based learning is the popular gourmet
hamburger chain Byron Hamburgers , the company was founded in 2007 by Tom Byng and currently
has 82 restaurants in the UK with 54 of them located in London. The inspiration that prompted Byron
s creation occurred to Tom Byng during a trip to America, he ate at many diners during this trip
sampling some of the best hamburgers that the nation has to offer. Upon his return to the U.K he
realised that there were no restaurants that served hamburgers the proper American way and Byron
was created.
Food and Beverage
The menu at Byron consists of hamburgers, salads and sides along with an extensive selection of craft
beers. Due to the nature of the food served, such as the burgers being cooked medium and the different
components of each burger, it is necessary that staff are sufficiently trained on all aspects of the menu.
Service Style
The service style in Byron, as with many casual dining restaurants is very laid back with staff
members encouraged to talk to and build rapport with customers. The feeling throughout all Byron
restaurants is modern, casual, artistic and humorous, this is communicated through all aspects of the
company such as interior décor of the restaurants, the menus, the training and the marketing.

The Causes Of Procrastination
Procrastination is the avoidance of doing a task that needs to be accomplished. It is a common issue
most Americans face today. Procrastination can be argued whether or not if it s caused by choice.
There are various factors that lead to procrastination such as; our being brain programmed to
procrastinate, feeling like you aren t in the right frame of mind to do a particular task, and the lack of
self confidence.
Procrastination doesn t happen just because, it is a result of our brain being programmed to do so.
Typically, we procrastinate because we visualize the hardest part of something that needs to be done. It
could be a range of doing a project, assignment, or even cleaning your house. According to Ciotti

This means we put important things off to avoid being uncomfortable. Dr. Sinclair also states, It s a
human reaction to avoid doing stuff we don t want to do to avoid potentially difficult situations, it s all
about our confidence and a fear that it won t go well and we won t be good enough. This is something
most can relate to because we visualize something going wrong so we won t do it. Another thing that
can be involved is perfectionism, we may not want to attempt something unless we feel sure that we
will be great at it. It becomes a vicious cycle, the more we procrastinate the more distressed we are
and undermine our own confidence. Procrastination also happens because we may have a low self
confidence. When difficulties arise, people with weak self confidence easily develop doubts about
their ability to accomplish the task at hand, while those with strong beliefs are more likely to continue
their efforts. (Heshmat, 2016). Whenever this happens, people miss opportunities to acquire new
knowledge and skills. An example of this would be someone with a low sense of confidence for math

reinstated. I understand that you might be wondering what a kid would understand about the Patriot
Act? Well, the thing is I understand plenty, as a matter of fact I agree with the Patriot Act to a certain
extent. I personally believe that the Patriot Act is a great concept that reinforces the protection of the
U.S from future terrorist attacks; however, some of its ideologies are slightly unjust. To my
understanding the Patriot Act is an act that emerged due to the horrific events of September 11th,
2001. I myself may not have had a first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To my understanding the U.S Constitution is a number of principles that are supposed to be
acknowledged by the U.S. I do not believe that the Patriot Act is obeying these principles; as a matter
of fact it violates several amendments that are in the Constitution. According to the highlights of the
Patriot act, Allowing males of Middle Eastern or South Asian descent to be profiled as potential
terrorists, without probable cause... This allows any person who is of Middle Eastern or South Asian
decent that lives in the U.S to be acknowledged as a terrorist without any evidence at all. This is
completely inhumane and causes major problems in society. It mainly forces countless individuals of
the U.S to live in fear just because of their ethnic background. Now, this is just one of the many
problems of the Patriot Act. According to Eric Lichtblau, ... [The Government] demand records from
institutions like libraries and medical offices; and use a broad definition of terrorism in pursuing
suspects... This demonstrates the violation of the 4th amendment, which states, ... unreasonable
searches and seizures shall not be violated... (Amendments to the Constitution). Essentially, I do
understand and believe in the concept of the Patriot Act, however, I don t find it to be relevant if it is
mainly contradicting the U.S

Animal Shelters and the No Kill Movement
Nationally, roughly four million animals are killed in shelters every year. Of these, roughly 95% of all
shelter animals are healthy and treatable. (No Kill Advocacy Center). No animal should have to ever
be a part of these awful statistics. What will it take to help save these innocent animals from being
killed senselessly? Animal kill shelters are horrible, inhumane, and overall completely unnecessary for
multiple reasons: No Kill shelters improve adoption rates, all animals lives are valuable, and No Kill
shelters save more money than other shelters. Why Waste a Valuable Life? Killing and disposing of
animals because there is no room available for them is unnecessary and inhumane. A shelter is usually
a place where something or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another question that comes to mind is if No Kill animal shelters are actually the solution or not.
Some pounds will kill as many as 90% of the animals they redeem and that owners hand over. But on
the other hand countless pounds are lessening their kill rates of adoptable animals to 0% (Animals).
Death should never be the solution when it comes to the lives of these powerless animals. Why Kill
When You Can Adopt? Usually when others are given the choice between a kill shelter and a No Kill
shelter the answer is almost always the No Kill shelter. What if each animal shelter in the United
States were to swap to No Kill shelters and if all the services and programs that help run No Kill
shelters were available? Well the United States would emancipate roughly four million cats and dogs
who are scheduled to die painfully in shelters this year, and the many years to come after that. This
dream is a dream that is not completely impossible to achieve (No Kill Advocacy Center). Why are
animals given a certain time line to be adopted when animals have the same right to life just as
humans do? Many passionate people feel the same way and that kill shelters are completely
unnecessary. The ASPCA has its own program called Mission Orange. This program works with
communities to help raise the shelter save rate by 10% a year so that it can accomplish a 75% save
rate by 2010 ( Animal Shelters and the No Kill

Masculinity And Women
What does it mean to be male or female? To you, masculinity is probably playing sports, drinking beer
while watching football games, and wearing a suit and tie. Masculinity is probably short hair and
bulging muscles. To you, femininity is probably dressing up in fancy dresses and jewelry, putting on a
face of makeup, and going to the nail salon. Femininity is probably long, flowing hair and a slender
body. This is not the truth, however. These images have been fed to us by society since the day we
were born. Society has created these idealistic men and women. A world in which the men go to work
at the factory and the women stay home with the children. Gender roles have been forced on almost
everything in life by society. From clothes to jobs, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Whis is it considered humorous when men dress up as women or women dress up as men? Why is it
considered wrong for a person of a certain gender to wear the clothing of another? Why is it that these
people these other human beings are taunted for being themselves? The answer to that is simple.
These innocent actions are perceived as disgusting and wrong in the eyes of society. The arrogance of
society has prevented us from pursuing something that would guarantee happiness. They would rather
ridicule us than allow us to disturb their perfect little world. Thousands of us hide away in the
shadows of anxiety instead of revealing our true self because we know how society would react. They
would reject us and isolate us until we revert back to a state of reservation. There is still have hope,
however. In the past few years, many male celebrity role models have revealed to dress up in women s
clothes or take on a role in which they act more feminine. Jaden Smith, the son of Will and Jada
Pinkett Smith, is one of these role models. Despite mockery from the media and supposed fans , Jaden
has broken past the boundaries of stereotypical fashion by becoming the new face of Louis Vuitton.
He was photographed for the spring/summer 2016 women s collection wearing a skirt. He represents
our generation; a generation in which people are free of gender questioning and promulgations. Jaden
has even overcome the disapproval of his father, who originally told him you cannot wear a skirt
because he believed that no one would let their children dress like him and feared that his son would
be outcasted by the

  • 2. The car has been a mainstay of American culture for about... The car has been a mainstay of American culture for about a century. The idea of a car in every garage has been around for almost as long. Teenagers view getting their driver s license as a rite of passage and our cross country highways support the notion of the Great American Road Trip. We drive our cars everywhere. And after all these years, doing so has become a problem. [1] Over the last century, the Earth s average temperature has risen by 1.4 °F. Over the next century, that average is expected to rise an additional 2 11.5 °F. This change has shown a strong correlation with the increase of greenhouse gases emitted by the burning of fossil fuels for energy and transportation. In fact, every year, human activity releases over ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... [4] Ethanol is a renewable energy source that can be produced domestically. It is produced from various plant materials such as corn, sugar cane and some types of grasses. Ethanol combustion will produce less greenhouse gas production and there is little extra cost to make vehicles able to run on high ethanol content fuel. While most of the gasoline used in the U.S. contains up to 15% ethanol, the more environmentally friendly E85 (or flex fuel) contains up to 83% ethanol. Unfortunately, this type of fuel can be problematic. Ethanol has a lower energy content than regular gasoline, which results in cars getting anywhere between 15 25% less miles per gallon (MPG). Furthermore, although E85 is generally cheaper per gallon, the lower energy content makes it slightly more expensive in terms of cost per mile. Finally, the fueling stations for E85 are generally located in the Midwest, which limits the widespread use of this type of energy alternative. [4] Biodiesel is another possible alternative. It can be produced from vegetable oils, animal fats, and recycled restaurant grease. Some of its advantages are that it is biodegradable, is generally safer to handle and it produces significantly less carbon dioxide emissions (up to 15% less). However, it too has problems. Similar to ethanol fuels, it has a lower energy content, which results in lesser MPG for cars. Fuels that contain a high percentage of biodiesel are also not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Human Law Vs. Divine Law Human Law vs. Divine Law Morality is principles that determines the distinction between right and wrong action, or good and bad behavior. There is also a link that being moral should be determined by either human law or divine law. The play Antigone , by Sophocles, shows the complexity of this certain concept of morality. Antigone must determine whether she should defy King Creon s law in order to bury her brother, Polynices, or reject her own religious beliefs in order to maintain in the King s good graces. At the same time, King Creon also has to determine what is right and wrong; he must decide if he should imprison and give the death sentence to Antigone for defying the law, or let her go free because of divine law. The issues shown in Antigone further exemplify the complexity of which law is right and if Antigone s and Creon s actions were justifiable. Should there solely be one person to create law? Or should there be a consideration for people that prefer divine law? According to Katrin Beushausen, Antigone was first staged around 442 BCE. It was a time of peace for Athens. Unfortunately, conflict with Sparta would again break out ten years later in the Peloponnesian War. It is important to realize that, at this point, democracy was not only an ambitious political system under which the life of the Athenian citizens was organized according to the idea of equality, but also represented an ideological instrument of power in Athens s pursuit of hegemony ... These provisions were aimed at providing new protections for health insurance consumers, lowering the cost and improving the quality of health care, and increasing access to health insurance and affordable care. While many of the ACA s provisions had implications for community health centers, the ones that impacted them most directly were the expansion of Medicaid and availability of subsidized health insurance through exchanges and the creation of the Community Health Center Fund, which allocated $11 billion in new funding through fiscal year 2015 for operations, capital projects, and expansion of services to enable community health centers to serve an anticipated 20 million newly insured patients (National Association of Community Health Centers, n.d.; Valley Community Healthcare, 2015). For VCH, preparing for implementation of the ACA focused primarily on expanding its operations and increasing its patient capacity, and this is the challenge I will focus on in evaluating Ms. Wilson s leadership (P. Wilson, personal communication, June 5, 2015). Recognizing that this was a time of unprecedented change in the organization s history and in her tenure as its leader, Ms. Wilson immersed herself in learning about change management and the tools she would need to lead the organization through its expansion. • 5. Optimal Dh And Temperature Conditions Lab Report Optimal pH and Temperature Conditions Comparative studies show that the optimum pH of LDH from rabbit muscle ranges from pH 6.2 to 7.8 [6]. A pH rate profile graph in a study by Fritz [6] reflects the results obtained in Figure 1, where the optimum pH was found to be 7.5 for LDH extracted from rabbit muscle. This is further supported by the optimal pH of rabbit muscle LDH obtained by another study [7], in which the pH is determined to be 7.5. Thus the results obtained in Figure 1 fall consistent with literature values. In a study by Buhl et al., the optimal temperature of LDH from skeletal muscle of aa human was 37oC[4], suggesting that denaturation characteristics of the enzyme would be observed beyond this temperature condition [1]. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The low Vmax could be due to an incomplete reaction. However, despite the large difference in Vmax between experimental and literature values, Figure 3 reflects similar data obtained in similar studies [9]. Michaelis Menten graphs depicted by Figure 4 and Figure 5 show that all concentrations of oxalic acid (0M, 0.01M and 0.03M) and oxamic acid (0M, 0.0200M and 0.0600M) ) seemingly saturate at the highest lactate concentration which was 95mM. In both figures, LDH saturates the fastest in the absence of inhibitors, followed by 0.01M oxalic acid and 0.0200M oxamic acid, and 0.03M oxalic acid and 0.0600M oxamic acid having the slowest reaction rate respectively shown in Figure 4 and Figure 5. These results reflect the Michaelis Menten graphs reproduced by experiments under similar conditions as explained by Powers et al [9]. As predicted, Km and Vmax values obtained from the Michaelis Menten graphs in Figure 4 and Figure 5 do not correspond with Km and Vmax values obtained in the Lineweaver Burk plot of LDH in Figure 3. The Vmax obtained in Figure 4 and Figure 5 were both 10.6µM/min in the absence of inhibitor whereas the Vmax in the absence of inhibitor was 0.34 µM/min in Figure 3. • 6. The Boundary Between The Pacific Plate And Australian... Sarit Laschinsky ESS 211 AC Pacific and Australian Plate Boundary The boundary between the Pacific Plate and Australian Plate is marked by volcanism, earthquakes, and different and unique topography. The border of these two plates is composed of a mix of transform and convergent boundaries along the Eastern edge of the Australian plate, with both divergent and convergent boundaries along the Northern edge. The Australian Plate is moving in a North to Northeastern direction at a speed of approximately 7 cm /year (although the continent of Australia only shifts by approximately 5.6 cm/year) [1][7]. Meanwhile, the Pacific Plate moves towards the Northwest at a speed of also approximately 7 cm/year (at least the speed of the movement of Hawaii). [7] Each plate subducts beneath the other at some points along the boundary, which contributes to some of the different volcanism and topographical features along the plate boundary. One of the major features of the Western edge of the Australian/Pacific plate boundary is the Alpine Fault. This is a transform or strike slip fault, running approximately 600 miles up the South Island of New Zealand. The Alpine Fault is considered to be a visible, on land boundary of the two constituent plates, and also marks the transition from a transform to convergent boundary. The Alpine Fault also ruptures, which leads to seismic activity as well as considerable horizontal movement, up to 30 m every 1000 years. This horizontal movement causes ... While most professions allow for careful thought and planning, a police officer is often thrust into a situation with little advanced intelligence about what is occurring. The IACP defines the use of excessive force as the application of an amount and/or frequency of force greater than that required to compel compliance from a willing or unwilling subject (Police Use of Force in America 2001, n.d, p. 1). According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics (n.d.), in 2005 19% of U.S. residents 16 and over had contact with a police officer. Of these contacts, 9 in 10 felt the police acted properly. During these contacts with approximately 43.5 million persons, an estimated 1.6% had force used against them or threatened to be used (Bureau of Justice Statistics, n.d.). A study by the International Association of Chiefs of Police (as cited in Police Use of Force in America 2001, n.d.) shows that force was used 3.6 times for every 10,000 (police/citizen) encounters this suggests that force was not used in 99% of all cases. From afar, Epicureanism may seem the most practical and relatable because one may look and assume that it is simply about indulging in pleasures as long as it makes you happy. However, that is a naive interpretation, as Epicureanism promotes pleasure, but only the natural and necessary ones. Along with only following the natural and necessary pleasures, it also highlights the importance of suppressing desires that cause one to long for pleasures that aren t necessary. In Epicurus Principal Doctrines, he writes, on a basis of power sufficient to afford supports and of material prosperity arises in most genuine form the security of a private life withdrawn from the multitude (2), meaning that wealth should not be a good that contributes to happiness. Video games have changed the entertainment industry and is now a billion dollar industry. The industry has also effected society. Of course, there are some benefits of using video games, but there are also many negative effects of the use of video games, especially on today s youth. According to NPD, ninety one percent of children from the age of two to seventeen play video games (Camp, 2011). In terms of the population of the youth, that is nearly sixty four million children (Camp, 2011). According to Dino Grandoni, children play from one to three hours of video games per day (Grandoni, 2014). With these facts, it is obvious that the use of video games will have some physical, mental, and social effects on the child, especially if the child becomes addicted to playing video games. The consequences of playing these games in an addictive manner includes physical issues, psychological issues, as well as issues connecting with people in the real world. Within a multilingual automatic speech recognition (ASR) system, knowledge of the language of origin of unknown words can improve pronunciation modelling accuracy. This is of particular importance for ASR systems required to deal with code switched speech or proper names of foreign origin. For words that occur in the language model, but do not occur in the pronunciation lexicon, text based language identification (T LID) of a single word in isolation may be required. This is a challenging task, especially for short words. We motivate for the importance of accurate T LID in speech processing systems and introduce a novel way of applying Joint Sequence Models to the T LID task. We obtain competitive results on a real world 4 language task: for our best JSM system, an F1 value of 97.2% is obtained, compared to a F1 value of 95.2% obtained with a state of the art Support Vector Machine (SVM). Words, phrases and names are often used across language boundaries in multilingual settings. Especially for minority languages, such {it code switching} with a dominant language can become an intrinsic part of the language itself~cite{modipaimplications}. Automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems are required to deal with various types of words of foreign origin. • 17. Applying An Analytical Model Of A Plane Wall Abstract To conduct a proper analysis of the 1 D transient conduction in a plane wall we must take the necessary mathematical procedures to obtain an analytical model that accurately represents the heat transfer that occurs. The equation must accurately model a plane wall that has a thickness L, is well insulated on one side, but is still vulnerable to convection on the other side. In order to complete the model, one must scale the problem in terms of both a length scale and a time scale to transform the variables to a dimensionless form that allows for a set of solutions that can be narrowed down to the simple parameter, Bi=hL/k. Introduction Mathematical Model This analysis looks into the phenomena of 1 D transient conduction in a plane wall of thickness L that is insulated on one side and subject to convection on the other. The conduction is governed by the differential heat equation: u_t=∝u_xx (1) Here, u signifies the temperature of the entire body and ∝ signifies the thermal diffusivity. Furthermore, the differential heat equation above must respect the following boundary conditions: u_x |_(x=0)=0 ku_x |_(x=L)=h(u| T_∞) u|_(t=0)=T_i In the above boundary conditions, k represents a material property commonly referred to as thermal conductivity, whereas T_i represents the initial temperature throughout the wall. This study was conducted to conclude if long term memory encodes acoustically (based on sound) or if encodes semantically (based on meaning). This is done by giving the participants word lists that are similar in sound and/or their meaning; if the participants struggle to recall the words in order it suggests that the long term memory is confused by the similarity, this means that this is how long term memory encodes. The first study that Baddeley conducted was that he gave participants four trials at learning the order of a list of words, he then used a 20 minute delay this was to remove the short term memory. The participants were then asked to recall as many words as they could in the order they were in. He compared their score in the 5th trial with the participants score in the 4th trial 20 minutes earlier this was to determine how much the participants had forgotten. Baddeley accepted the fact that the participants who had to remember words with similar meaning would find it harder than the participants who had to remember words that rhymed. He understood this because he thought the LTM (long term memory) worked by semantic encoding this means they would be confused by the similarity in the meanings, however, not by the similarity of the sounds. She also knows the mind of the Canaanite people including what they know about Israel and what they most fear. Even as she is the quintessential Canaanite, Rahab has been enlightened to the God of the Israelites. In the original Hebrew she uses the name Yahweh, which is a more personal and very Israelite name for God. She knows the Israelite conquer of Canaan is more than just militaristic, that it is ritualistic with holy inspiration. Spina notes, Rahab knows that Yahweh your God is God in heaven above and on earth below. The phrase God in heaven above is used by only three biblical figures: Moses, Solomon, and Rahab. What a combination! Rahab stands as a symbol of the temptations the Israelites will face because of the idols of Canaan. (Think of the phrase whoring after idols used repeatedly in the Old Testament.) She, however, protects the Israelite spies and, as evidenced by Joshua 6:25, is eventually assimilated into Israel. This rule gives every state certain liberty to the states, such as choosing their own type of state legislature. In the United States, the state legislatures have been chosen according to the commodities of each state, their necessities and other factors, such as geographic region, population size, or area size. The comparison between the several options of state legislatures can be observable through the level of professionalization that every state has produced throughout the legislatorial period. For instance, the State Legislature of Texas, as a hybrid legislature, has proved both annual and biennial sessions and budgets, but even then, it has been a challenge to achieve a great rate of passing bills. Even when the Governor of Texas has the power to summon a special session; like 16 other states, the rate of passing bills has been decreasing lower than 25% from the total of bills proposed (Zelinski, 2017). Furthermore, the session length is the factor that engulfs the management of time over legislatorial sessions. This control opens a possible influence over the political agenda of the party in control over the legislature, where there is a potential advantage taken by the governors, thus impacting state business and affairs. To illustrate this, the usual time of session for the North Dakota legislature is sixty six days over a two year period, there would be a 0.78% increase in the state s budget by the propositions of the governor (Kousser and Philips, 2009). In addition, the variation on the amount of compensation for legislators has become a key factor over the professionalization level throughout the states. For example, a lawmaker in Illinois would receive a base salary of $67,836 per year and a per diem rate, per each day of session, of $111. On the other hand, a state lawmaker in Idaho is going to receive $16,438 as a base salary and a per diem rate ranging from $25 to $122 (NCSL, 2014 State Legislator Compensation). Therefore, it is common to see that states where their legislators are being paid higher salaries, such as in California, Pennsylvania or Illinois, are being ranked at a higher level of professionalization, rather than part time legislature states, like New Hampshire or Utah. The inspiration that prompted Byron s creation occurred to Tom Byng during a trip to America, he ate at many diners during this trip sampling some of the best hamburgers that the nation has to offer. Upon his return to the U.K he realised that there were no restaurants that served hamburgers the proper American way and Byron was created. Due to the nature of the food served, such as the burgers being cooked medium and the different components of each burger, it is necessary that staff are sufficiently trained on all aspects of the menu. • 38. The Causes Of Procrastination Procrastination is the avoidance of doing a task that needs to be accomplished. It is a common issue most Americans face today. Procrastination can be argued whether or not if it s caused by choice. There are various factors that lead to procrastination such as; our being brain programmed to procrastinate, feeling like you aren t in the right frame of mind to do a particular task, and the lack of self confidence. Procrastination doesn t happen just because, it is a result of our brain being programmed to do so. Typically, we procrastinate because we visualize the hardest part of something that needs to be done. It could be a range of doing a project, assignment, or even cleaning your house. Dr. Sinclair also states, It s a human reaction to avoid doing stuff we don t want to do to avoid potentially difficult situations, it s all about our confidence and a fear that it won t go well and we won t be good enough. This is something most can relate to because we visualize something going wrong so we won t do it. Another thing that can be involved is perfectionism, we may not want to attempt something unless we feel sure that we will be great at it. It becomes a vicious cycle, the more we procrastinate the more distressed we are and undermine our own confidence. Procrastination also happens because we may have a low self confidence. When difficulties arise, people with weak self confidence easily develop doubts about their ability to accomplish the task at hand, while those with strong beliefs are more likely to continue their efforts. (Heshmat, 2016). Whenever this happens, people miss opportunities to acquire new knowledge and skills. An example of this would be someone with a low sense of confidence for math avoids enrollment for an upper level math course (Heshmat, 2016).
