“Through spontaneity we are re-formed into
ourselves. It creates an explosion that for the
moment frees us from handed-down frames
of reference, memory choked with old facts
and information and undigested theories and
techniques of other people's findings.
Spontaneity is the moment of personal
freedom when we are faced with reality, and
see it, explore it and act accordingly. In this
reality the bits and pieces of ourselves
function as an organic whole. It is the time of
discovery, of experiencing, of creative
expression.”
– Viola Spolin, known as the Mother of
Improvisational Theater
When we create something new that has value in your life, in your community, and beyond, we have made art. Art is not and
cannot be reserved for people who consider themselves experts or professionals. Art belongs to all of us. Art is the power that
all of us have to take risks, generate new ideas, combine those ideas with other ideas, and solve problems. We make art as a
gift to our audience. When they witness our art, they share a gift with us.

What are the skills we are learning?
“Play is the lubrication that
allows human society to work
and individuals to be close to
each other. Which
is why play is the most important
element in love.”
- Stuart Brown, M.D., author of
“Play: How it Shapes
the Brain, Opens the
Imagination, and Invigorates the
Soul” and founder of the National
Institute for Play
Through the Make a Play process, we are learning and practicing the essential
social/emotional skills that allow us to be happy in our own lives while maintaining
healthy relationships with others. When exploring the complexities of our world, we
need to enter in through the lens of play. Play is our right as living beings to enjoy
ourselves and each other. Play in all forms – games, creative play, physical activity –
is the ultimate mechanism to explore and practice human interaction.

How are these skills applied to build
Compassionate Communities?
"Theatre is a form of knowledge;
it should and can also be a
means of
transforming society. Theatre
can help us build our future,
rather than just waiting for it.”
- Augusto Boal, innovator,
politician, director & founder of
Theatre of the Oppressed
I define a Compassionate Community as an interdependent group of people connected by
passion, proximity, or both who care deeply for the well-being of each other. Have you
ever been to a redwood grove? Then, you have seen that the trees very tall and stand very
close together. You would think that trees that tall have extra-strong roots that cut super-
deep into the earth. But this is not the case, the roots grow relatively shallow under the
surface of the earth. What we know about redwood trees is that they are able to stand as
tall as they do because their roots grow in an interconnected, interdependent web with the
roots from the other trees around them. One tree is able to stand so tall because its roots
are being supported by all of the other trees around it. As our communities learn to act
more like redwood groves, we change our world for the better.
