2. Today’s
Reflections
• What is your Personality?
• How is your Personality
formed?
• Why is your Personality
formed?
• What is a Personality Type?
• Why is knowing your
Personality Type important?
• Are Personality and Ego
connected?
4. How is your Personality formed?
• The Personality is a complicated meshing of your genes
(temperament) and your upbringing (environment).
• Your temperament will make you more predisposed to
develop or adopt certain characteristics from your family
unit, that is your environment.
• It is complicated, but keep this in mind- if Hitler had have
been raised by Mother Theresa, he probably wouldn’t
have went on to be the Hitler we read about. Your
temperament will be effected by your upbringing.
5. Why is your
Personality
formed?
• Your Personality is formed,
simply to help you function
in the world.
• By function, I mean stay
alive and hopefully thrive!
• All your deeply held beliefs,
behaviours and emotional
responses are a bye-product
of you learning to function
in your world.
6. What is a Personality Type?
A Personality Type is an attempt to put
individuals who share similar beliefs,
behaviours and emotional patterns, into a
particular category.
Everyone is unique but most of the time we
do share similar traits with a particular group
of people. Identifying what these traits are,
through ‘typing’ yourself is an essential first
step in Emotional Intelligence training and
education.
7. Why is knowing
your Personality
Type important?
Each Personality Type
has a particular set of
emotional patterns and
behaviours.
The emotions and
behaviours were largely
set in your first 7 years
of life.
The emotional patterns
and behaviours are
largely unconscious.
You continue to play out
the old unconscious
scripts from your
childhood, in your adult
life.
It is these old scripts
that are generally no
longer fit for purpose
and cause emotional
suffering.
The invitation is to
diagnose your
Personality Type and to
‘Stop Being Your Self’.
8. Are Personality
& Ego
connected?
Remember that you developed a personal set of beliefs,
behaviours and emotional responses to help you
function in your world, that is developed a personality.
Your Ego is simply the protection you give to those
beliefs, behaviours and emotions. Sounds strange,
doesn’t it?
If the Personality is the castle you have built, the Ego is
the protective moat around it.
The Ego or moat is strong because you identify with
your beliefs, behaviours and emotions- or Personality.
You get your ‘identity’ from your Personality.
