Persuasive Essay On The Giver
Many thanks to all those who have participated in today s debate. It is a question worth asking. It
is a question that deserves answers. Should the government be deciding our families? In effect,
running our lives? We, the opposition team say, firmly, no. They should not. Even in the world
of The Giver, in the supposed utopia of the Community, it is clear that families should not be
decided and designed by the government. First off, we see that great sacrifices, sacrifices so
horrible to the point of being terrible crimes in our world, are made to achieve these so called,
perfect families of The Giver. The most obvious of these is the release, or should I say murder,
of twins. A mother gives birth to two beautiful, healthy children, and the Community, in their
quest for perfect and perfect families, kills one of the two without emotion or second thought.
We see this on page 150 as Jonas s father injects an infant with some form of poison and then, in a
sweet, kind voice, says Bye bye little guy as he dumps the child s body down the same sort of
chute into which trash was deposited at school. And let s keep in mind that all of this takes place
months after the child was first taken from its mother. A mother who carried the child in her womb
for nine long months only to never see him or her. This is a despicable act in itself. Therefore, the
Community should not be celebrated for its creation of perfect families because of the terrible acts
they commit to create them.

Heterogeneity of consumers Although a technology may be cost effective on average for a class of
users taken in aggregate, the class, itself, consists of a distribution of consumers: some could
economically purchase additional efficiency, while others will find the new level of efficiency not
cost effective (Sweeney 1993). This difficulty, is also referred to as aggregation bias.... Show more

Bounded rationality Bounded rationality emphasizes limitations to rational decision making that are
imposed by constraints on a decision maker s attention, resources, and ability to process
information. It assumes that economic actors intend to be rational, but are only able to exercise
their rationality to a limited extent (Simon 1957). Important theoretical.
Rebound effect (Social Economic) Rebound effects are where energy efficiency improvements
lead to an energy service becoming cheaper relative to other goods and services, which can lead to
increased consumption or create wealth from the energy savings. Rebound effects can therefore
have positive social and economic consequences but may lead to a conflict with the goal to reduce
energy use and emissions.

Motivation and features for Microfluidic and Lab on a chip
Lab on a chip is the main platform of Microfluidic technology. The computer chips miniaturize the
size of computer, Lab on a chip miniaturize the size of laboratory. In the past, chemists required a
long period of time and a large amount of sample or reagent to complete the analysis or synthesis.
However, using a square centimeter size chip instead of those large analysis instrument not only
reduces the consumption of resource but also shortens the experimental time. In addition, because
of these miniatures, the sewage emissions are also reduced. In other words, it is a kind of green
technology.
With the research and development of microfluidic chips, it has many unique characteristic features.
First, the chip material becomes diversified from those expensive glass and silicon materials to
PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane), PMMA (poly methyl methacrylate), PC (polycarbonate) and other
polymer materials allows a high degree of flexibility, while the cost are continually decreasing [2].
Second, the manufacturing processes are more precision by using automatic and numerical
controlled sub UV laser to produce a smooth microchannel instead of hand based MEMS
(microelectromechanical) [3]. Third, the components are highly integrated in a small chip including
pumps, valves, channels, reactors, etc. [3]. The fourth point is the precision drive technology

Essay On Atonement
Adapted from Ian McEwan s novel Atonement. In 1935, thirteen year old Briony Tallis (Saoirise
Ronan) changes the lives of her sister Cecilia (Keira Knightley) and lover Robbie Tuner (James
McAvoy). She accuses Robbie of a crime he didn t commit, which has damaging consequences and
guilt which affects Briony s entire life.
Cinematography is implemented in a variety of different ways to convey Briony s character. Even
before the introduction of Briony, an overview of her bedroom and of the dollhouse, filled with
model figures carefully arranged, reveals much about her personality. This is the first evidence
regarding the creative yet manipulative personality of Briony. She has arranged her toys to replicate
Noah s Ark, demonstrating the side ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the beginning of the film, 13 year old Briony witnesses the sexual tension between her sister
and Robbie; however, she does not completely comprehend what she is seeing. As a result, this
leads to the arrest of Robbie, as Briony believes that what she saw was he assaulting both her sister
and cousin Lola. This incident leads to the concept of perception in which lighting is utilised in a
clever way to illustrate this. When Briony encounters Cecilia and Robbie in the library, the light
shone on half her face contrasts against the face shadowed on the other half. This is symbolic to
her perception of the situation, as she is only observing a portion of what has happened. As
Briony is only aware of half of the complete situation, this causes her to misjudge the event.
Similarly, when she discovers Lola being assaulted, light is utilised through her torch when she
discovers Lola, the torch blinds her momentarily, throwing her into the light and then darkness.
This causes Briony to fade, emphasising the idea of how one s sight can affect your perceptions.
These events are critical, as Briony s incorrect perception of occasions is the catalyst for the whole
film and the consequences that are to come. Additionally, light is used when Briony goes to Paul
Marshall the man who assaulted Lola and Lola s wedding. Briony gazes upwards as light falls upon
her from above, implying a sudden comprehension of her understanding of who assaulted Lola.
Here, light depicts the understanding of the truth. Throughout the film, light is used to illustrate
various ideas, and it tells its own particular story underneath the action of the main

The (9 34) Los Angeles Lakers face the (17 23) Sacramento Kings at the Staples Center in the
third game of their four game season series. The Lakers wasted a fast start (shot 74 percent from
the field in the first quarter) and surprisingly competitive first half before the Rockets turned up
the heat defensively, dropped a nine 0 scoring run on the purple and gold to start the third quarter
en route to a 22 point lead in a 112 95 victory.
The Rockets sixth straight win against the Lakers sending the purple and gold into a three game
losing skid. However, the game provided some positives in addition to the accompanying and
omnipresent negatives.

Rebecca Nurse Quotes
Let you fear nothing! Another judgement waits us all! This profound exclamation is made by
the immensely wise and reputable Rebecca Nurse. Rebecca is a well known elderly woman in
Salem, Massachusetts. Rebecca Nurse and I closely resemble one another in that we are both
exceptionally nurturing with children, devout in our beliefs, and humble towards our
accomplishments. Firstly, Rebecca Nurse and I are similar because of our nurturing capabilities
towards infants and children. In the play The Crucible, it is revealed that Rebecca is the mother
of eleven children who have blessed her with 26 grandchildren. The fact that Rebecca conceived
and gave birth to eleven healthy babies reveals that she is well suited for motherhood. The fact that
she raised all of these children up to be adults, and eventually parents, proves... Show more content

When Rebecca is introduced in The Crucible, it is emphasized that she is deeply rooted in her
Puritan beliefs. She does not just attend church services because she knows that as a Puritan, it
is the right thing to do. Rebecca regularly attends church and reads her Bible for leisure to
deepen her relationship and understanding of God. Similarly, I also value any time alone to talk
to God, in addition to weekly church services and youth group. Throughout Salem, Rebecca s
reputation is that she is a very religious woman. Similarly, I am seen as a very religious girl at
Hempfield. Coming from a Catholic school, I entered Hempfield with the label of being a
Catholic school girl . Like Rebecca, I enjoy being known for living for Christ. Rebecca goes over

Amyotrophic Later Sclerosis (ALS)
Amyotrophic Later Sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive disease that occurs in the nerve cells which
controls muscle movement. Over time it takes over the rest of the patient s body until finally the
heart gives up. Motor neurons make this disease progress. They reach from the brain to the spinal
cord to the muscles throughout the rest of the body. Degeneration of the motor neurons is the cause
of death in patients. The death of motor neurons leads to the brainnot being able to control muscle
movement. ALS is mainly a sporadic disease but 10% of cases are familial. Since the cause is still
unknown it is hard to tell where people actually contract the disease from. Some theories about the
cause of ALS is, some patients have had a head injury in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The entire life of the patient and the patient s family changes. It all starts to consume their daily
lives. Depending on the patient, the lifestyle changes could start anywhere from a week to a few
months after diagnosis. The family has to help the patient do everything as the disease
progresses. To make life easier for the patient there are things able to be done to help them with
daily activities. Such as eating, breathing, and walking. Feeding tubes are available to be
installed, breathing machines to make breathing easier, walkers, and wheelchairs so walking isn
t so strenuous. There is nothing you can do to stop this disease, but there are medications that
have been found to slow progression. Scientists are still on the hunt to cure this disease, and
people all across the nation are contributing with donations through the Walk to Defeat ALS
which has raised $213,327,280 since the walk started in 2000 and it has raised $31,327,276 so
far this year. Another large fundraiser was the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. It challenged people all
across the nation to pour a bucket of ice water over their heads and donate to the ALS association
for research. This was supposed to create awareness of the disease and simulate the feeling ALS
patients have when losing the ability to control their muscle movements. Through the ice bucket
challenge over $100 million has been raised for a

Allen Ginsberg s Relationship With The Beat Movement
The Beat poets, in exploring the limits of the human experience and pushing the boundaries of
literature, often found themselves in stark opposition with the legal system. The poets explored the
boundaries of society, participating in illicit drug use, sexual expression, and other alternative ways
of life. This made the authors targets of the projection of unconstitutional laws based on the
conservative opinions of officials. Allen Ginsbergin particular experienced a arc of respect and
conformity with the law that often left his work the target of obscenity trials. As he grew older
Allen Ginsberg s relationship with the law evolved, taking larger and larger risks, and his
indoctrination with the Beat Movement caused increased confrontation... Show more content on

The work was met with huge praise from those in attendance and among his cohort. The piece
was originally intended to be a personal piece, not for public consumption. Ginsberg correctly
foreshadowed the backlash that occured after publishing due to the explicit nature of the
content and phrasing (Schumacher). However, Lawrence Ferlinghetti successfully published
the work in 1956. Early the next year, copies of the work were seized for the graphic content.
Allen Ginsberg s Howl was subjected to censorship trials shortly after its publishing. While
Ginsberg himself was not charged, the trial was an attack of his work and morals as a beat poet
and had the trial been successful, would have stifled Ginsberg s platform. The trial transcript
reveals that while Howl pushed the boundaries of American society, the work did not bear
content to be legally defined as unfit for publishing, but fell victim to the conservative views of
law enforcement officials (Morgan). Howl was prosecuted in 1957 for obscenity involving
discussions of homosexual and heterosexual sex, illegal drugs, and other Beat topics. Lines such a
who let themselves be fucked in the ass by saintly motorcyclists, and screamed with joy were
called out to be damaging to society (Ginsberg). Book sellers and Lawrence Ferlinghetti were
arrested for the distribution of obscene literature. The American Civil Liberties Union provided

The Old Nurse s Story
When it comes to Elizabeth Gaskell and her stories, the story titled, The Old Nurse s Story , serves
as the perfect example of the Gothic elements that were very popular in many authors stories and
poems during this period of time. During this time of British literature, Romanticism and Gothic
elements were the two main strategic ways of writingand how the audience read and perceived the
stories being told. The Gothic element of writing consisted of dark, gloomy and ghostly literature
that brought a haunted feel to the each story. Some Gothic stories could consist of ghostly figures
haunting the characters in the story or the stories told could be about someone suffering a
gruesome death that brought a darkness theme to it. That Gothic feel was very evident in the story
by Gaskell because of the supernatural figures that were present as she describes the setting, the
description of the characters and the issue that was taking place. Some of those Gothic elements
that you see throughout the story is the house that seems to be isolated, the mysterious sounds that
they continue to hear and the storms outside. These supernatural details give the story the dark and
gloomy theme that makes it part of the Gothic period. When discussing the The Old Nurse s Story
, the general synopsis of the story is about a young orphan girl that is left in the care of her nanny
and her aunt that has a bunch of servants. The story starts out like any other typical story but as it

The New School Food Program
The Meriam Webster dictionary defines obesity as a condition that is characterized by excessive
accumulation and storage of fat in the body due to inactivity and a lack of a proper diet.
America has one of the highest obesity rates on earth, with childhood obesity becoming an
increasingly prevalent problem in America. Obesity leaves one s body vulnerable to different
kinds of diseases such as diabetes and can also lead to internal organs failure. Students spend most
hours of their day in a school environment and consume most their daily calories there. Today
most school menus are overrun by meals high in salt, fat, and sugar. The new school food program
promotes healthy menus that feature fresh, nutritious and appealing menus. The recent changes
not only help to improve the health but help s economically to the families affected by the recent
global recession. By changing the breakfast and lunch programs in schools, more children are
afforded the opportunity to eat healthy especially the one s directly affected by the economic
hardships. Children are the future leaders of tomorrow and in order to keep them healthy to one
day lead nations they have to incorporate a balanced meal while in school. Recent research studies
have shown that executing wellness programs and policies in schools can have a positive impact

Childhood Obesity And Overweight And Obesity Essay
Obesity has become one of the number one factors affecting today s youth. Numerous factors
contribute to childhood obesity such as, poor lifestyle choices and the lack of exercise. In the
article Harrison et al. (2011) indicates in order to understand why childhood obesity and
overweight are on the rise, we first need to establish the factors that contribute to this dilemma.
There is no doubt that nature and nurture contribute to childhood overweight and obesity; that is
why researchers developed the Six Cs Model to examine this problem of childhood obesity. The
Six Cs Model focuses on six categories: cell, child, clan, community, country, and culture. This
ecological model helps researchers understand the factors of childhood overweight from a young
age to adolescence (Harrison et al., 2011). There has been numerous research on childhood obesity
and many of them have offered ecological models that have been influenced by Bronfenbrenner
(1979) and many others. Harrison et al. (2011) extends this model by developing the Six Cs Model
that identifies the environmental, hereditary and psychosocial influences that can be adapted at any
stage from infancy through adolescence. In each sphere, the authors contributed their supports with
recent studies and providing factors that has contributed to childhood overweight and obesity. The
way they convey these ideas is by highlighting the important developmental stages that children
undergo. A major finding would be that a child s body

Disadvantages Of Listening To Music
Americans operating automobiles undergo the typical way of life, but sitting behind a wheel can
often start to feel monotonous. Motorcycles, however, seem exotic and provide a rejuvenating
change in tempo. In order to evade colorless life, the populace may listen to music in order to link
them into another reality. While listening to music seems like an entertaining activity, playing it
proves to dominate. Musicians playing guitars mentally, leave reality and enter a dreamlike
dimension of spine tingling rhythm and melody. With both, traveling on a motorcycleor strumming
the chords of a guitar, a beginner must assimilate what they have learned to reach excellence. So
whether its a musician playing melodic tunes on guitar or a motorcyclist cruising on down a
highway, both prove ways to spark a thrill in a rather boring life or ways to improve skills in
order to reach certain merit. Motorcyclists experience immense exhilaration when gliding down
long streets or bumping up and down dusty hills. Trained motorcyclists can perform breathtaking
tricks that amaze audiences and make them feel accomplished. These perks make motorcycling so
amusing for not only rides but fans. For instance, when motorcyclists cruise down empty roads,
they can speed up to over 70mph and weave in and out of lanes while doing impressive wheelies to
entertain themselves. Likewise, a musician playing guitar experiences the thrill of performing.

Examples Of Worthy And Unworthy Worship
a. The Worthy and Unworthy Worship
Worship is about God and for the glorification of His name; it is a celebration of love that gives
life and empowering to His people, who worship Him in righteousness through obedience.
Specifically, worship involves abandoning oneself to God as an offering that is being represented
by his sacrifice to atone for his sin. Significantly, people come to His presence to verbalize their
deep affection for Him through such an ardent worship. The Bible delineates that God shows
unreserved favor to those who faithfully love Him with all their heart, soul, and strength
(Deuteronomy 6:5); but on the other hand, God hates and curses those who do not love Him and
worship Him selfishly.

They would normally hear His voice to give them divine guidance, warning and instructions on how
they should live, worship and maintain their relationship with Him. (Genesis 4:7). Adam and Eve
loved and feared God; thus, Cain and Abel learned and developed their faith through their teachings
and instructions. (Romans 10:17) Furthermore, they were trained properly to worship God through
an offering.
An excellent example of worthy and unworthy worship in the Old Testament is that of Cain and
Abel since it is the first arresting message of God in Genesis after the fall man and persuasively
an essential message of redemption. Both Cain and Abel worshiped God but approach it
differently. Remarkably, Abel loved and feared God most of all in his life that he carefully
obeyed all His instructions and requirements for worship, while Cain selfishly worshiped God
according to His will and presumptions. Abel, in awe of his creator, offered God the best firstlings
of his flocks and their fat portions. The aroma of Abel s offering reached God and was well pleased

For the purpose of struggling against some additional difficulties when going internationally,
companies have to consider of the importance of international business and being awareness of
implementing an effective strategy on an international level .
1.3.1 The Importance of International Business
International business is a process which its all activities are carried out under the control of
government. It involves two or more countries. To understand the importance of going
internationally, it would be good to find out the answer of this question; why is international
business important especially for domestic companies? The simplest answer is that international
business has a huge and growing share of the business in the world. Today, many companies all
around the world, large or small, are influenced by global issues and competition for the reason of a

Rosalind Franklin s Accomplishments
From the 1940s to the 1950s, there was a scientific discovery that scientist all over the world were
trying to figure out. Rosalind Franklin, a women in science, was competing to discover the
structure of DNA. During her career she had worked in England and France, facing many
difficulties because she was a women in science. She had more difficulties in England because the
gender gap was much larger than in France where she was looked at more of an equal than a
lesser. During Rosalind Franklin s entire career she was always competing with scientist all over
the world, but sometimes she didn t know that she was competing or racing to discover something

Rosalind Franklin s career was affected in many ways due to the gender gap in science. At King
s College, in England, she was at a disadvantage in her work because she was excluded from
something so simple as eating lunch on premises, The male staff at Kings launched in large,
comfortable, rather clubby dining room, though the females of any age or distinction, launched
either in student halls or off premises (Sayre, pg. 97). Franklin had missed all of the informal
conversations that took place during lunch, which may not seem like a big deal but it was. Not
being able to talk about her research and listening to other people s research could have stopped
her from maybe realizing something she was doing wrong or maybe someone would give her
feedback. At the time, women were not respected through all of England because they were
women. Watson calls Rosalind Rosy , which by giving her a nickname and not calling her by her
full name shows he has no respect for her. He describes her as termagant...she refuses to emphasize

Nice To Eat With You Chapter 1 Summary
Ryan Klemann
AP Literature and Composition
Mrs. Mills Chapter 5 Nice to Eat with You: Acts of Communion: As Kumalo arrives in
Johannesburg, he dines with Msimangu and other priests, which include blacks and whites. The
priests at the mission sit together forgetting about color, signifying that the two races can be
together in agreement, and they welcome Kumalo s story with interest. Kumalo talks about his
village and describes how people will leave Ixopo and create a sense of brokenness in the tribe,
which are all falling to ruin. One priest wished to hear more, but got up and left to attend other
affairs, symbolizing an end of a relationship. At this meal, news of a Johannesburg couple that had
been beaten and robbed by a couple of natives was discussed. This meal of the priests is not only
an act of communion, but it represents a bond created by two different races, which is the main
issue of this novel. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Like Christ, Arthur teaches to love each race and be considerate towards whites and blacks. As
Arthur Jarvis died in chapter eleven, he brought optimism and change to the people, similar to Jesus
Christ bringing redemption and spiritual growth of many people. Due to his teachings being
rejected by many people of South Africa, he was killed. As Arthur Jarvis was killed, there were
pictures of crucified Christ and Abraham Lincoln, both people who fought for what they believed
in, human compassion, and were killed for their beliefs. Through Arthur Jarvis, the reader sees
sacrifice through his actions, which relate him to Jesus Christ, the greatest sacrifice we know of.

The Negative Effects Of The Barbie Syndrome
Picture yourself as the perfect woman. Embodying every woman s dream. You are undeniably
gorgeous, weighing in at 100 pounds, standing 6 feet tall and holding nearly 150 careers (Barbie
History). This is the inspirational, ever so beloved childhood toy, the perfect Barbie Doll.
Barbie is America s most loved toy, considering many young girls at least owned one or more
Barbies throughout their childhood. These young girls looked up to Barbie as their role model
throughout life, which lead to them comparing themselves to Barbie. The Barbie Syndrome is
an definite culprit of girls persistent desire to strive for perfection. Barbie s unrealistic beauty
and extraordinary lack of diversity has lead to many negative effects within women in today s
society, including a ceaseless desire to be perfect, and overall lower rates of self esteem.
Throughout the years the Barbie Company decided to fix this mistake by creating a plethora of
different Barbies, to try to raise women s self esteem. Starting with Barbie s debut, she has been
influencing young girls perceptions of beauty, when in reality Barbie s body, measures 18 33 39
(waist, hips, bust),which would be unable to bear a children, and she would have been unable to
hold up her own neck and back . Also in reality, she would have been disproportioned and need to
crawl on all fours to get to place. Regardless of popular belief, it seems as if Barbie is not perfect
after all, and has flaws like any human being.

Hierarchy Of Effect Of Amazon
Introduction
Nowadays it is crucial for companies to understand and have a clear vision about trends and levels
on customer knowledge, preferences and behaviors, in order to develop with success their brand
and product strategy.
In effect, studies of awareness, attitudes and usage are made in way to measure these trends and
they are based on the theory of Hierarchy of Effects, assumption that explains the process with
which the consumer, primarily, starts to be aware about the product, with initial trial of it, and then,
after adoption of the product, he becomes loyal to it.
In this way companies can see how their reputation and competition increase, starting a growth

To do this, after its foundation, Amazon came up with the idea of customer reviews, which it
means that if people see other people s review about products and services acquired online they feel
more confident to proceed with the purchase. Doing constantly that operation, company s reputation
and safeness can increase as well as the number of people who start buy on the internet.
They developed a recommendation module, insight integrated after seeing that, between the last
purchase and the following one, exists a connection. It means that after the purchase several
suggestions about a set of customized products are given to the customer, in way to give more
visibility to similar products and to ease their discovery.
To make easy and simplify online shopping they created a process called one click ordering with

The Implementation Of Nonlinear Material Laws
4.3. Resume about used program The implementation of nonlinear material laws in finite element
analysis codes is generally tackled by the software development industry in one of two ways. In
the first instance the material behaviour is programmed independently of the elements to which
it may be specified. Using this approach the choice of element for a particular physical system is
not limited and best practice modelling techniques can be used in identifying an appropriate
element type to which any, of a range, of nonlinear material properties are assigned. This is the
most versatile approach and does not limit the analyst to specific element types in configuring the
problem of interest. Notwithstanding this however certain software developers provide specific
specialised nonlinear material capabilities only with dedicated element types. ANSYS (ANSYS
Manual Set, 1998) and (Installation Guide ANYSYS) provides a dedicated three dimensional
eight nodes solid isoparametric element, Solid65, to model the nonlinear response of brittle
materials based on a constitutive model for the triaxial behaviour of concrete (William, K.J. et al.,
1975). 4.4. Finite element modeling 4.4.1 Geometry The details of tested columns were shown in

The Usefulness of YAH Maps
1Discussions
It was also difficult to isolate the effect of YAH maps in way finding, since personal characteristic,
past experience of using YAH maps, educational background and familiarity with the building might
have influence the results. Therefore, the participant answered some question related to these
factors. There is opportunity to extend the current study by examining the questions outlined above,
although this is beyond the scope of this investigation.
1.1Discussion experiment one: How useful are YAH maps in solving a spatial task?
Using YAH maps in solving the way finding task could improve the timeperformance of
completing and estimating the task. By looking at YAH mapparticipates could get at least an idea
where they should go and which way they should follow. Moreover they could choose the shortest
path based on the map .The result of this study shows that the average time for completing task
from source to destination for Group A which could use YAH map are less than Group B(Table 4).
However, the difference is not too much. Additionally, YAH maps are useful for choosing the path
and estimating the time. Based on our results, participants in group A predict the time that they
need for completing the task more precisely compare to group B (Table5).
Choosing the path to destination based on YAH map could shows the usefulness of YAH maps.
People who choose the path based on YAH maps information spend less time compare to other. In

American society was never truly ready to face mental illness, and Steinbeck wanted to open the

DNA Profiling Essay example
From cases such as OJ Simpson to Chandra Levy, DNA profiling also called DNA fingerprinting
or DNA typing has played a major role in the criminal justice system. The law enforcement
community uses DNA profiling to rule out or identify suspects. Unlike hair microscopy, bite mark
comparisons, shoe print comparisons, and firearm tool mark analysis, DNAtyping has been
developed through massive scientific research and has undergone meticulous scientific evaluation
(Innocence Project). DNA is a foolproof method of identifying a perpetrator of a crime.
Like fingerprints, DNA is unique, with the exception of identical twins; no two people have the
same DNA. DNA profiling is a technique that can identify the person responsible of a violent ...

With over three million base pairs in the human gene, forensic scientists are able to distinguish a

. DNA profiling was first introduced to the criminal justice field in the mid 1980 s (DNA
Initiative). DNA profiling was first described in 1984 by Alec Jeffreys, a geneticist at the
University of Leicester in Britain (Aronson, 7). Dr. Jeffreys found that the genes that have no
function, called junk DNA is where most of the variation is used for DNA profiling (Aronson 9).
This region contains DNA sequences that repeat over and over again. Alec Jeffreys determined that
the number of repeated sections at different locations vary from individual to individual (DNA
Initiative). Consequently these repetitive regions became known as variable number of tandem
repeats or VNTR s.
RFLP or restriction fragment length polymorphisms became the first scientifically accepted DNA
analysis method in the United States (Jones). The repeat segments are cut out of the DNA strand
by a restrictive enzyme that acts like scissors and the resulting fragments are sorted out by
electrophoresis (Saferstein 391). However, there are some drawbacks using the RFLP method in the
forensic science community. The RFLP technique requires a large amount of DNA and must be of
high quality and cannot be degraded (Jones). Forensic scientists and the law enforcement

party than capitalism since Jurgis is making thirty plus dollars each month. This new wage is
nothing compared to the amount he was making before. Throughout the novel capitalism is
portrayed as a destructive form of government while Sinclair promotes socialism. Another major

games are bad for a person s health, and if playing them for an excessive amount of time has a
change in one s health. The tests that researchers study will inform people about gaming and
how it changes their health, but there will still be millions of people playing video games. There
are many people who love to play and even play video games for a living, but there are many
people who disagree with video games. Many of the people who disagree with video games are
mainly parents who see their kids playing them, but there are more than just parents who do not
like them. There are many other disagreements about video games that people think harm
someone s health and relationships. I think video games can be good for people and that they
can even relieve stress to a point, but anyone playing video games needs to know when to take a
break or stop playing. Many people who do not like video games because they are too violent only
see the violent games and not much more. It is usually the parents who buy their kid a gameand do
not realize that it is too violent and then they hate the video games. I agree that video games
should not be played by kids, but that is why there is a game rating. This game rating shows what

Alternate Outcome At Fort Ticonderoga
Alternate outcome at Fort Ticonderoga
In order to come to an alternative outcome, one must first address the instructional letter sent from
General Gage to General Carleton after the battles at Lexington and Concord. The letter took far too
long to get to General Carleton. General Gage had credible human intelligence suggesting that the
colonists wanted to take Fort Ticonderoga. While one understands that one must use the chain of
command, one would think the immediacy of the letter was far more important and should have
gone directly to Fort Ticonderoga, instead of the 10 day long ride to Montreal. And even if that
was not proper protocol, General Gage could have at least sent an advisor with knowledge of
surveillance techniques to Fort Ticonderoga to aid in their post and give better forewarning of a
potential attack.
Secondly, had the British force at Fort Ticonderoga had cavalry scouts assigned to it, there would
not have been much of an American Revolution. The cavalry scouts would have picked up the trail
of Colonels Allen, Arnold, and the Green Mountain Boys. The Scouts could have performed
reconnaissance and then reported back to the garrison commander, putting the whole fort on guard.
Then the garrison commander could have contacted both the British sloop in Lake Champlain and
the garrison at Fort Crown Point for further aid and reinforcements, beating back the patriot
attacking force.

Honest Iago of Shakespeare s Othello Essay
Honest Iago of Othello
To most of the world William Shakespeare is recognized as the greatest dramatist in history. His
plays have been performed for centuries through various interpretations. Shakespeare s vast
knowledge, and writing style made his works interesting for both the intellectual, and the illiterate.
One of these styles is the use of motifs, which is seen extensively in Othello. An important example
that runs throughout Othello, is Iago s honesty. This motif gave existence to Shakespeare s perfect

This will encourage Desdemona to see Iago as a confidant, and eventually she asks Iago for his

Cassio s trust in Iago stems not only from his impeccable reputation of sincerity, but again from
Othello s influence. Othello simply states; Iago is most honest. [Act II, scene iii], when
conversing with Cassio. Once more, if Othello feels this way, then Cassio, who admires Othello
and follows his leadership, will also believe that Iago is an honest man. When Iago pretends to

Iago s supposed honesty is ironically, also a result of his own lying, by making statements that help
him sustain his reputation. When he explains Roderigo and Cassio s fight to Othello, he claims to
do it with a heavy heart, because he does not want to cause problems for Cassio. However, he
feels he must tell the truth; I had rather have this tongue cut from my mouth than it should do

Socrates and Thrasymachus: What is Justice? What is justice? This is the common refrain
throughout Plato s Republic. As a work of philosophy, Republic attempts to answer this question by
posing thought provoking conversations between Socrates and the characters he meets in his
travels. These characters serve as foils and counterpoints to Socrates and his own interpretation of
justice. Perhaps the most interesting counterpoint to Socrates comes in the conversation with
Thrasymachus, a skeptical Sophist who rejects a simple vision of what is just. Thrasymachus
rejects a hard definition of justice and argues that justice is fluid and a product of society, and while

their reason for being paid is to serve the interests of their people. But Thrasymachus ironically

because of Banquo s suspicion of him, and what Banquo will do to him once he finds out for

paper helped greatly. This English class was definitely different than high schoolEnglish.
College English class was very different than high school English class. In high school there
was not much emphasis on proper headings and titles. If we had correct name, date and title, the
teacher would not care about the parts such as page number and margins. In high school we read
more books but mainly paid attention to the sequence of events and put pieces of the story
together and not go into detail about tone, point of view or persuasion in the book. High school
papers were around 2 3 pages, but in college most of them are 6 or longer. Citing after a sentence
is much more stressed in college and plagiarism is taken much more

Pros And Cons Of Minimum Wage
COMPENSATION PACKAGES
Minimum Wage A minimum wage is the lowest remuneration that employers can legally pay their
workers. Equivalently, it is the price floor below which workers may not sell their labor. Although
minimum wage laws are in effect in many jurisdictions, differences of opinion exist about the
benefits and drawbacks of a minimum wage. Supporters of the minimum wage say it increases the
standard of living of workers, reduces poverty, reduces inequality, and boosts morale. In
contrast, opponents of the minimum wage say it increases poverty, increases unemployment
particularly among unskilled or inexperienced workers and is damaging to businesses, because
excessively high minimum wages require businesses to raise the prices of their product or
service to accommodate the extra expense of paying a higher wage. In the US, wages for almost
all workers are set either by market forces or by collective bargaining. The body referred to as
Fair Labor Standards Act determines the minimum wage that is abided by all states. As per the
2015 data, the minimum wage per hour is 7.25 USD. However, this is not the case with the
fourteen states and some cities with their own minimum wage at federal level. For instance, in
Florida the minimum wage per hour is 8.10 USD and in California its 10.50 USD per hour. In
Greenland the minimum wage for both private and public sector is 20 USD per hour, not official.
The pay rates are set through collective bargain agreements regardless

Kent State University Internship Assignment
This past summer, I had the opportunity to study at Kent State University s NYC Studio and intern
at Fabric to Finish, Inc., a product development consulting firm in the Garment Center. I valued my
time there, but would not call my internship a success. I was inexperienced and undereducated and
it showed in nearly everything I did. In fact, I knew nothing about the product development process
and made countless mistakes. I understand that making mistakes while interning is apart of the
learningprocess and is more or less normal, but being normal is not acceptable for me. While I
was embarrassed of my lack knowledge, I still loved going to my internship everyday, being able

The Compromise of 1850 Essay
The compromise of 1850 was a settlement on a series of issues plaguing the unity of the states.
The primary issue to address was the institution of slavery, which was causing much dissension
between the north and the south. Additional items to be addressed were territory issues and to
prevent secession by the south. Henry Clay stepped forward to present a compromise, which had
Congress in an eight month discussion known as the Great Debate . As a result of the proposal,
there were strong oppositions. One outspoken person who opposed the proposal was John C
Calhoun. Calhoun was an intellectual southern politician, political philosopher and a proponent to
the protection of Southern interests. He was an advocate for states rights and... Show more content

Webster believed the issue of slavery was settled long ago, when the regions were divided into
slave and free states, and he also believed an agreement could be reached between the pro slavery
positions in the south and anti slavery position in the north. Comparatively, Calhoun and Webster
both saw the union was in danger of falling apart, they also both believed the issues of slavery
between the north and the south was the major cause. Where they disagreed was on the future
state of slavery. Calhoun saw the compromise as a betrayal of the south; he sought to have the
northerners agree to the protection of slavery in the south so the south would remain in the union.
Calhoun knew slavery pre existed and believed it must continue to exist. Webster was more of a
pacifist, he pleaded with the northerners to accept demands of the south in order to save the
union, even though he did not accept the fact slavery needed to continue. Webster deeply believed
that preservation of the union was more important than any other issue. In addition, William
Henry Seward also opposed the proposed compromise. Seward was a New York politician and
secretary of state and was one of the major political figures of the mid nineteenth century; he
became one of the most outspoken anti slavery politicians of the period. Seward condemned Clay s
resolutions on the

Oryx And Crake Essay Playing God
Playing God: Abusing Scientific Advancements As Jack Kevorkian says, Anytime you interfere
with a natural process, you re playing God . By that qualification, a great deal of human activity
gets simplified to the idea of playing God . In Margaret Atwood s novel, Oryx and Crake, Glenn,
better known as Crake, becomes godlike in the sense that he creates products that manipulate
natural functions and his own form of people like creatures, the Crakers. However, Crake is not the
only character to engage in godlike activity. The major premise of this novel is the advancement of
gene splicing and genetic engineering to the point where scientists are creating hybrids of animals

Plastic surgery is a scientific advancement that enables individuals to improve their bodies in
order to conform to societal norms. Yet, plastic surgery exists as a way for humans to play God .
Those who decide to go under the knife cosmetically are openly rejecting the body that God gave
them. Instead, they turn to another God, their plastic surgeon. People refuse to accept their own
reflections and abuse plastic surgery without considering the risks and ramifications of it, just
like the people in the Oryx and Crake universe. Despite stepping into the role of God, characters
within the novel lack any definitive spiritual or religious beliefs. The way in which their culture
evolved did not foster a need for a deity, but having religious or spiritual beliefs can enable
individuals to develop a moral compass of sorts. Characters rarely bring up the questionable ethics
connected to the scientific advancements. Jimmy s mother, Sharon, is one of the only characters
who criticize the compounds for their actions. At one point, she believes that the compounds are
truly helping people (Atwood 56 57). However, as the compounds become more elitist and
seemingly cruel to animals, Sharon becomes disillusioned. One day after Jimmy comes home from

Legacies of Kenya Essays
Many different tribal communities inhabited Kenya, during its pre colonial period. Today there
are about 42 different tribes in Kenya who are all different from each other ( Safari in Africa ).
The Agikuyu and the Miji Kenda were farmers, the Maasai and the Samburu lived off of
livestock, and the majority like the Luo and the Abagusii practiced a mixture of crop cultivation
and pastoral work. Subsistence production was the norm and manual labor came from the family.
Classes were mostly non existent and poverty was not much of an issue either as reciprocity was
largely practiced. Relations between other tribal communities were for the most part were good as

Where the separation of tribes created most trouble was in politics.
Today Kenya is troubled in a political sense, as was proved by the violent and uncontrolled
elections of December 2007, in which somewhere around 1,000 people were killed and over
300,000 made homeless ( Kenya Profile ) Targeted ethnic violence directed towards the Kikuyu
people, the community that the controversially elected president Kibaki belonged to. Although
Kenya has had surprising political stability despite having issues like at one point having only one
legal political party, alliances and disagreements begin with tribal loyalties and disagreements. This
history implies that tribal identity is more important than creating national identity in a country
where the notion of tribal identity is challenged by western government systems. Just as political
issues and violence arose from detrimental demarcation of boundaries, the corrupt political
leadership during colonial regimes created a weak and dependent economy.
The British exercised indirect colonial rule, meaning they entrusted the government and
administration to traditional rulers while having something like advisors for them. Despite this, the
British instituted colonial policies in Kenya like Land alienation for European settlers, African
taxation, and forced African and migrant labor. With these policies came the rise of settler
dominated

obstacles he/she has to go through when growing up. Some situations are just much worse than
others. These tragic memories stick with the person for their lifetime. Victor Joseph in the
movie Smoke Signals is a great example of a man with a very dour childhood that includes many
hardships. Victor Joseph s journey in Smoke Signals highlights the universal theme on fear of
one s past. Firstly, the way Smoke Signals brings this theme alive throughout Victors Joseph s
journey. In the beginning, the movie displays the chaos of the house fire that happened. This is
the start of the disturbing memories victor has to deal with as a child. He also then has to deal
with his dad slapping his mother who then storms out of their lives for no reason. Victor Joseph
then grows up with these memories and questions and starts to fear knowing anything about it. He
and his mother become dolorous about the whole situation and ignore it until they get to know that

social aspects of learning (SEAL). The game was created to meet the specific needs of children
who are the siblings of a disabled child. The relationship of the author s game and the SEAL
programme will be considered. Thereafter the way in which children acquire emotional

The authors game is designed to be used in support of, and as an extension to, the Social and
Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL) programme Good to be me element (2005), which
addresses the management of feelings, self awareness and showing empathy. The game is intended
to be used with children who have a disabled sibling. The object of the game is twofold, firstly it is
for the users to be able to recognise, name and talk about the emotions that they experience as a
sibling of a disabled child, secondly to become aware that some of their peers are in similar
situations to themselves which may help them feel less isolated. As Children develop they gain
more emotional understanding, becoming aware of their own feelings and the feelings of others.

1.7.2Neuro Imaging
Neuroimaging can be a useful tool in detecting physical abnormalities in the brain. Most people
with a severe brain injury will show an abnormality in a neuro imaging test. These scans cannot
detect all types of brain injuries, so it is possible to have a severe brain injury and be in a coma
even though the scan results are normal.
1.7.2.1Computerized Tomography (CT) Scan
A computerized tomography (CT) scan uses x ray beam technology to create a computerized
image of the brain one section or slice at a time. CT imaging is now the standard of care for a
person who has sustained a significant head injury to determine if a skull fracture has occurred. A
CT image will determine whether there is hemorrhaging or a blood clot forming, brain swelling, or
even if a foreign object has penetrated the brain. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Keeping Students In High School
People argue about whether to keep students in school until they turn 18. However, contrary to
what people may think school should keep students until they are of 18. Since people with high
school diploma have more money, less chance of getting into jail or getting public assistance.
Without a high school diploma, the students earn less money. In a 2009 graph the average income
by education stated that high school dropouts make $19,540. Meanwhile someone that has
completed high school makes around $27,380. With this knowledge we can infer some things
such as, with the dropout they could barely afford a place to live and food. But with the high
school education that person can get a place to live, food, and start going to college or a university.

The Kite Runner Film
Jack and Alex walked out of the theater, pondering their thoughts on the film they d just seen. The
Kite Runner, a film about a boy not standing up for his best friend, trying to forget his guilt and
eventually embarking on a dangerous journey to try to redeem himself.
Wow, that movie was such an eye opener! I had no idea what Afghan culture was about, let alone
the hardships and struggles people faced, said Alex, But it was really about guilt and atonement I
guess. What did you like the best Jack?,
The relationship between Amir and Hassan. It s so different from any relationship I ve
experienced. Amir and Hassan are as closeas a servant and master can be, yet Amir acts like
Hassan, a Hazara, is beneath him. Amir never learns to assert himself against anyone else because
Hassan always defends him. I think these factors play into his childhood cowardice of sacrificing
Hassan. Hassan however remains loyal, forgiving, and good natured, replied Jack. So what do you
think of their friendship?
Well I think Hassan and Amir were brothers from the start, before their relationship decayed after
Hassan was raped. Foster uses the pomegranate tree symbolizes the friendship. Amir even carves
on the tree Amir and Hassan, the sultans of Kabul which formalizes their friendship and shows
they are as close as brothers. Then After Hassan s rape, Amir throws pomegranates at Hassan
hoping that Hassan will hit him back and free him from his guilt. Hassan then crushes a

James K. Polk And Manifest Destiny
James K. Polk was elected as president of the United States in 1848 and with him he brought a
determination to expand territory more than any other president had before. In his one term
administration he expanded the country by two thirds. Polks hunger for more land resulted in a
war with Mexico over Texas which evoked lots of opposition from the Whig party. The idea of
Manifest Destiny was germinating throughout Democrats everywhere, countering the Whig
ideology of true republicanism . They believed A nation cannot simultaneously devote its
energies to the absorption of others territories and the improvement of its own, (pg, 49). Polk
ignored this belief and soon John C. Fremont was declaring California independent and Stephen
Watts Kearny was leading his army to several victories south of the Rio Grande. Nicholas Trist
was able to get Mexico to sign the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, recognizing the Rio Grande
boundary of Texas and ceding New Mexico and upper Californian to the US. Now that this triumph
of Manifest Destiny was complete, the question of expanding slavery to the newly acquired
territories arose. Polk assumed there would not be slavery there because it would simply not work
in the natural conditions of the lands but southerners strongly disagreed. Northern congressmen
tried to pass a resolution known as the Wilmot Proviso to exclude slavery from the new territory,
extremely infuriating southerners and dividing the parties into a conflict of sections.

Portrayal Of Judas In The Film King Of King
e could do.
The character Judas Iscariot, betrayer of Jesus, is often portrayed in a negative way according to
many but when looking through the three films, The King of Kings, King of Kings, and Jesus
Christ Superstar, he is considerably misunderstood as to what his real desires are.
Although the four gospels tell similar stories, Judas is portrayed mostly similar but slightly
different to each person. Between the four gospels Matthew and Mark represent Judas to be very
similar way and the same for the gospels of Luke and John.
Mark wrote his gospel from a Gentile, Pauline Christian view and he did not portray them in a
very flattering way. He was known as the betrayer according to Mark s gospel but he had

In this film Judas is played by an African American, which is uncommon, depicts Judas as loving
Jesus until the end. Many people questioned why judas race was represented by his villainy and
caused much controversy. The film of Jesus Christ Superstar is completely told by Judas
perspective and was main part of the movie. Throughout the movie he didn t seem to be evil or
have the predisposition to betray Jesus, he showed caring feelings and wanted what he thought
was best for Jesus. Something that I thought was interesting was after he betrayed Jesus he
realize what he had done and went to the high priest and begged for his money back and them to
stop. He couldn t believe what he had done and hanged himself. Judas caused Jesus anger much
throughout the movie, He seemed to enjoy the attention and did not like him trying to tell him to
stop and shy away from the crowd so he begins to ignore him. When Judas sees that he himself
has lost control as well, he realizes his mistake and the terrible, mysterious love that Jesus had for
him. Judas echoes Mary s song, and goes on to see that his friend knew all along what would
happen. In the end of the movie Judas committed suicide but his questions were never answered. He
still remained angry with Jesus (and God) and continually asks him not to think wrong of him. He
thought very highly of Jesus but just wanted to make sure he made the right

  • 2. Persuasive Essay On The Giver Many thanks to all those who have participated in today s debate. It is a question worth asking. It is a question that deserves answers. Should the government be deciding our families? In effect, running our lives? We, the opposition team say, firmly, no. They should not. Even in the world of The Giver, in the supposed utopia of the Community, it is clear that families should not be decided and designed by the government. First off, we see that great sacrifices, sacrifices so horrible to the point of being terrible crimes in our world, are made to achieve these so called, perfect families of The Giver. The most obvious of these is the release, or should I say murder, of twins. A mother gives birth to two beautiful, healthy children, and the Community, in their quest for perfect and perfect families, kills one of the two without emotion or second thought. We see this on page 150 as Jonas s father injects an infant with some form of poison and then, in a sweet, kind voice, says Bye bye little guy as he dumps the child s body down the same sort of chute into which trash was deposited at school. And let s keep in mind that all of this takes place months after the child was first taken from its mother. A mother who carried the child in her womb for nine long months only to never see him or her. This is a despicable act in itself. Therefore, the Community should not be celebrated for its creation of perfect families because of the terrible acts they commit to create them. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Potential barriersDescription/Examples Heterogeneity of consumers Although a technology may be cost effective on average for a class of users taken in aggregate, the class, itself, consists of a distribution of consumers: some could economically purchase additional efficiency, while others will find the new level of efficiency not cost effective (Sweeney 1993). Bounded rationality Bounded rationality emphasizes limitations to rational decision making that are imposed by constraints on a decision maker s attention, resources, and ability to process information. Rebound effect (Social Economic) Rebound effects are where energy efficiency improvements lead to an energy service becoming cheaper relative to other goods and services, which can lead to increased consumption or create wealth from the energy savings. The computer chips miniaturize the size of computer, Lab on a chip miniaturize the size of laboratory. In the past, chemists required a long period of time and a large amount of sample or reagent to complete the analysis or synthesis. However, using a square centimeter size chip instead of those large analysis instrument not only reduces the consumption of resource but also shortens the experimental time. In addition, because of these miniatures, the sewage emissions are also reduced. In other words, it is a kind of green technology. With the research and development of microfluidic chips, it has many unique characteristic features. First, the chip material becomes diversified from those expensive glass and silicon materials to PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane), PMMA (poly methyl methacrylate), PC (polycarbonate) and other polymer materials allows a high degree of flexibility, while the cost are continually decreasing [2]. • 6. Essay On Atonement Adapted from Ian McEwan s novel Atonement. In 1935, thirteen year old Briony Tallis (Saoirise Ronan) changes the lives of her sister Cecilia (Keira Knightley) and lover Robbie Tuner (James McAvoy). She accuses Robbie of a crime he didn t commit, which has damaging consequences and guilt which affects Briony s entire life. Cinematography is implemented in a variety of different ways to convey Briony s character. Even before the introduction of Briony, an overview of her bedroom and of the dollhouse, filled with model figures carefully arranged, reveals much about her personality. This is the first evidence regarding the creative yet manipulative personality of Briony. She has arranged her toys to replicate Noah s Ark, demonstrating the side ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the beginning of the film, 13 year old Briony witnesses the sexual tension between her sister and Robbie; however, she does not completely comprehend what she is seeing. As a result, this leads to the arrest of Robbie, as Briony believes that what she saw was he assaulting both her sister and cousin Lola. This incident leads to the concept of perception in which lighting is utilised in a clever way to illustrate this. When Briony encounters Cecilia and Robbie in the library, the light shone on half her face contrasts against the face shadowed on the other half. This is symbolic to her perception of the situation, as she is only observing a portion of what has happened. As Briony is only aware of half of the complete situation, this causes her to misjudge the event. Similarly, when she discovers Lola being assaulted, light is utilised through her torch when she discovers Lola, the torch blinds her momentarily, throwing her into the light and then darkness. This causes Briony to fade, emphasising the idea of how one s sight can affect your perceptions. These events are critical, as Briony s incorrect perception of occasions is the catalyst for the whole film and the consequences that are to come. Additionally, light is used when Briony goes to Paul Marshall the man who assaulted Lola and Lola s wedding. Briony gazes upwards as light falls upon her from above, implying a sudden comprehension of her understanding of who assaulted Lola. Here, light depicts the understanding of the truth. Throughout the film, light is used to illustrate various ideas, and it tells its own particular story underneath the action of the main ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Rebecca is a well known elderly woman in Salem, Massachusetts. Rebecca Nurse and I closely resemble one another in that we are both exceptionally nurturing with children, devout in our beliefs, and humble towards our accomplishments. Firstly, Rebecca Nurse and I are similar because of our nurturing capabilities towards infants and children. In the play The Crucible, it is revealed that Rebecca is the mother of eleven children who have blessed her with 26 grandchildren. The fact that Rebecca conceived and gave birth to eleven healthy babies reveals that she is well suited for motherhood. Similarly, I also value any time alone to talk to God, in addition to weekly church services and youth group. Throughout Salem, Rebecca s reputation is that she is a very religious woman. Similarly, I am seen as a very religious girl at Hempfield. Coming from a Catholic school, I entered Hempfield with the label of being a Catholic school girl . Like Rebecca, I enjoy being known for living for Christ. Rebecca goes over and above for her religion by taking her relationship with God outside of the church. • 9. Amyotrophic Later Sclerosis (ALS) Amyotrophic Later Sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive disease that occurs in the nerve cells which controls muscle movement. Over time it takes over the rest of the patient s body until finally the heart gives up. Motor neurons make this disease progress. They reach from the brain to the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the rest of the body. Degeneration of the motor neurons is the cause of death in patients. The death of motor neurons leads to the brainnot being able to control muscle movement. ALS is mainly a sporadic disease but 10% of cases are familial. Since the cause is still unknown it is hard to tell where people actually contract the disease from. Some theories about the cause of ALS is, some patients have had a head injury in... Depending on the patient, the lifestyle changes could start anywhere from a week to a few months after diagnosis. The family has to help the patient do everything as the disease progresses. To make life easier for the patient there are things able to be done to help them with daily activities. Such as eating, breathing, and walking. Feeding tubes are available to be installed, breathing machines to make breathing easier, walkers, and wheelchairs so walking isn t so strenuous. There is nothing you can do to stop this disease, but there are medications that have been found to slow progression. Scientists are still on the hunt to cure this disease, and people all across the nation are contributing with donations through the Walk to Defeat ALS which has raised $213,327,280 since the walk started in 2000 and it has raised $31,327,276 so far this year. Another large fundraiser was the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. It challenged people all across the nation to pour a bucket of ice water over their heads and donate to the ALS association for research. This was supposed to create awareness of the disease and simulate the feeling ALS patients have when losing the ability to control their muscle movements. Allen Ginsberg s Relationship With The Beat Movement The Beat poets, in exploring the limits of the human experience and pushing the boundaries of literature, often found themselves in stark opposition with the legal system. The poets explored the boundaries of society, participating in illicit drug use, sexual expression, and other alternative ways of life. This made the authors targets of the projection of unconstitutional laws based on the conservative opinions of officials. Allen Ginsbergin particular experienced a arc of respect and conformity with the law that often left his work the target of obscenity trials. Ginsberg correctly foreshadowed the backlash that occured after publishing due to the explicit nature of the content and phrasing (Schumacher). However, Lawrence Ferlinghetti successfully published the work in 1956. Early the next year, copies of the work were seized for the graphic content. Allen Ginsberg s Howl was subjected to censorship trials shortly after its publishing. While Ginsberg himself was not charged, the trial was an attack of his work and morals as a beat poet and had the trial been successful, would have stifled Ginsberg s platform. The trial transcript reveals that while Howl pushed the boundaries of American society, the work did not bear content to be legally defined as unfit for publishing, but fell victim to the conservative views of law enforcement officials (Morgan). Howl was prosecuted in 1957 for obscenity involving discussions of homosexual and heterosexual sex, illegal drugs, and other Beat topics. • 11. The Old Nurse s Story When it comes to Elizabeth Gaskell and her stories, the story titled, The Old Nurse s Story , serves as the perfect example of the Gothic elements that were very popular in many authors stories and poems during this period of time. During this time of British literature, Romanticism and Gothic elements were the two main strategic ways of writingand how the audience read and perceived the stories being told. The Gothic element of writing consisted of dark, gloomy and ghostly literature that brought a haunted feel to the each story. Some Gothic stories could consist of ghostly figures haunting the characters in the story or the stories told could be about someone suffering a gruesome death that brought a darkness theme to it. That Gothic feel was very evident in the story by Gaskell because of the supernatural figures that were present as she describes the setting, the description of the characters and the issue that was taking place. Some of those Gothic elements that you see throughout the story is the house that seems to be isolated, the mysterious sounds that they continue to hear and the storms outside. These supernatural details give the story the dark and gloomy theme that makes it part of the Gothic period. When discussing the The Old Nurse s Story , the general synopsis of the story is about a young orphan girl that is left in the care of her nanny and her aunt that has a bunch of servants. • 16. Childhood Obesity And Overweight And Obesity Essay Obesity has become one of the number one factors affecting today s youth. Numerous factors contribute to childhood obesity such as, poor lifestyle choices and the lack of exercise. In the article Harrison et al. (2011) indicates in order to understand why childhood obesity and overweight are on the rise, we first need to establish the factors that contribute to this dilemma. There is no doubt that nature and nurture contribute to childhood overweight and obesity; that is why researchers developed the Six Cs Model to examine this problem of childhood obesity. The Six Cs Model focuses on six categories: cell, child, clan, community, country, and culture. This ecological model helps researchers understand the factors of childhood overweight from a young age to adolescence (Harrison et al., 2011). There has been numerous research on childhood obesity and many of them have offered ecological models that have been influenced by Bronfenbrenner (1979) and many others. Harrison et al. (2011) extends this model by developing the Six Cs Model that identifies the environmental, hereditary and psychosocial influences that can be adapted at any stage from infancy through adolescence. In each sphere, the authors contributed their supports with recent studies and providing factors that has contributed to childhood overweight and obesity. • 27. The Implementation Of Nonlinear Material Laws 4.3. Resume about used program The implementation of nonlinear material laws in finite element analysis codes is generally tackled by the software development industry in one of two ways. In the first instance the material behaviour is programmed independently of the elements to which it may be specified. Using this approach the choice of element for a particular physical system is not limited and best practice modelling techniques can be used in identifying an appropriate element type to which any, of a range, of nonlinear material properties are assigned. This is the most versatile approach and does not limit the analyst to specific element types in configuring the problem of interest. Notwithstanding this however certain software developers provide specific specialised nonlinear material capabilities only with dedicated element types. ANSYS (ANSYS Manual Set, 1998) and (Installation Guide ANYSYS) provides a dedicated three dimensional eight nodes solid isoparametric element, Solid65, to model the nonlinear response of brittle materials based on a constitutive model for the triaxial behaviour of concrete (William, K.J. et al., 1975). 4.4. DNA profiling was first introduced to the criminal justice field in the mid 1980 s (DNA Initiative). DNA profiling was first described in 1984 by Alec Jeffreys, a geneticist at the University of Leicester in Britain (Aronson, 7). Dr. Jeffreys found that the genes that have no function, called junk DNA is where most of the variation is used for DNA profiling (Aronson 9). This region contains DNA sequences that repeat over and over again. Alec Jeffreys determined that the number of repeated sections at different locations vary from individual to individual (DNA Initiative). Consequently these repetitive regions became known as variable number of tandem repeats or VNTR s. RFLP or restriction fragment length polymorphisms became the first scientifically accepted DNA analysis method in the United States (Jones). The repeat segments are cut out of the DNA strand by a restrictive enzyme that acts like scissors and the resulting fragments are sorted out by electrophoresis (Saferstein 391). • 33. Alternate Outcome At Fort Ticonderoga Alternate outcome at Fort Ticonderoga In order to come to an alternative outcome, one must first address the instructional letter sent from General Gage to General Carleton after the battles at Lexington and Concord. The letter took far too long to get to General Carleton. General Gage had credible human intelligence suggesting that the colonists wanted to take Fort Ticonderoga. While one understands that one must use the chain of command, one would think the immediacy of the letter was far more important and should have gone directly to Fort Ticonderoga, instead of the 10 day long ride to Montreal. And even if that was not proper protocol, General Gage could have at least sent an advisor with knowledge of surveillance techniques to Fort Ticonderoga to aid in their post and give better forewarning of a potential attack. Secondly, had the British force at Fort Ticonderoga had cavalry scouts assigned to it, there would not have been much of an American Revolution. The cavalry scouts would have picked up the trail of Colonels Allen, Arnold, and the Green Mountain Boys. The Scouts could have performed reconnaissance and then reported back to the garrison commander, putting the whole fort on guard. Then the garrison commander could have contacted both the British sloop in Lake Champlain and the garrison at Fort Crown Point for further aid and reinforcements, beating back the patriot attacking force. Thirdly, with more troops at the fort, the British could have afforded a couple ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

His plays have been performed for centuries through various interpretations. Shakespeare s vast knowledge, and writing style made his works interesting for both the intellectual, and the illiterate. One of these styles is the use of motifs, which is seen extensively in Othello. An important example that runs throughout Othello, is Iago s honesty. This will encourage Desdemona to see Iago as a confidant, and eventually she asks Iago for his advice when she experiences trouble with her husband. Cassio s trust in Iago stems not only from his impeccable reputation of sincerity, but again from Othello s influence. Othello simply states; Iago is most honest. [Act II, scene iii], when conversing with Cassio. Once more, if Othello feels this way, then Cassio, who admires Othello and follows his leadership, will also believe that Iago is an honest man. When Iago pretends to help Cassio, he comments; I never knew a Florentine more kind and honest , [Act III, scene I]. Iago s supposed honesty is ironically, also a result of his own lying, by making statements that help him sustain his reputation. When he explains Roderigo and Cassio s fight to Othello, he claims to do it with a heavy heart, because he does not want to cause problems for Cassio. However, he feels he must tell the truth; I had rather have this tongue cut from my mouth than it should do offense to Michael Cassio. Yet I persuade myself to speak the truth. [Act II, scene iii]. As a work of philosophy, Republic attempts to answer this question by posing thought provoking conversations between Socrates and the characters he meets in his travels. These characters serve as foils and counterpoints to Socrates and his own interpretation of justice. Perhaps the most interesting counterpoint to Socrates comes in the conversation with Thrasymachus, a skeptical Sophist who rejects a simple vision of what is just. Yes, the doctor is paid for his work just as the ruler is paid to rule, but their reason for being paid is to serve the interests of their people. The killing of Banquo by Macbeth shows extreme selfishness; he cannot bear to see even his best friend s sons succeed him on the throne. • 43. Pros And Cons Of Minimum Wage COMPENSATION PACKAGES Minimum Wage A minimum wage is the lowest remuneration that employers can legally pay their workers. Equivalently, it is the price floor below which workers may not sell their labor. Although minimum wage laws are in effect in many jurisdictions, differences of opinion exist about the benefits and drawbacks of a minimum wage. Supporters of the minimum wage say it increases the standard of living of workers, reduces poverty, reduces inequality, and boosts morale. In contrast, opponents of the minimum wage say it increases poverty, increases unemployment particularly among unskilled or inexperienced workers and is damaging to businesses, because excessively high minimum wages require businesses to raise the prices of their product or service to accommodate the extra expense of paying a higher wage. In the US, wages for almost all workers are set either by market forces or by collective bargaining. The body referred to as Fair Labor Standards Act determines the minimum wage that is abided by all states. As per the 2015 data, the minimum wage per hour is 7.25 USD. However, this is not the case with the fourteen states and some cities with their own minimum wage at federal level. For instance, in Florida the minimum wage per hour is 8.10 USD and in California its 10.50 USD per hour. In a 2009 graph the average income by education stated that high school dropouts make $19,540. Meanwhile someone that has completed high school makes around $27,380. With this knowledge we can infer some things such as, with the dropout they could barely afford a place to live and food. • 55. The Kite Runner Film Jack and Alex walked out of the theater, pondering their thoughts on the film they d just seen. The Kite Runner, a film about a boy not standing up for his best friend, trying to forget his guilt and eventually embarking on a dangerous journey to try to redeem himself. Wow, that movie was such an eye opener! I had no idea what Afghan culture was about, let alone the hardships and struggles people faced, said Alex, But it was really about guilt and atonement I guess. What did you like the best Jack?, The relationship between Amir and Hassan. It s so different from any relationship I ve experienced. Amir and Hassan are as closeas a servant and master can be, yet Amir acts like Hassan, a Hazara, is beneath him. Amir never learns to assert himself against anyone else because Hassan always defends him. I think these factors play into his childhood cowardice of sacrificing Hassan. Hassan however remains loyal, forgiving, and good natured, replied Jack. So what do you think of their friendship? Well I think Hassan and Amir were brothers from the start, before their relationship decayed after Hassan was raped. Foster uses the pomegranate tree symbolizes the friendship. Amir even carves on the tree Amir and Hassan, the sultans of Kabul which formalizes their friendship and shows they are as close as brothers. Then After Hassan s rape, Amir throws pomegranates at Hassan hoping that Hassan will hit him back and free him from his guilt. Hassan then crushes a pomegranate ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 56. James K. Polk And Manifest Destiny James K. Polk was elected as president of the United States in 1848 and with him he brought a determination to expand territory more than any other president had before. In his one term administration he expanded the country by two thirds. Polks hunger for more land resulted in a war with Mexico over Texas which evoked lots of opposition from the Whig party. The idea of Manifest Destiny was germinating throughout Democrats everywhere, countering the Whig ideology of true republicanism . They believed A nation cannot simultaneously devote its energies to the absorption of others territories and the improvement of its own, (pg, 49). Polk ignored this belief and soon John C. Fremont was declaring California independent and Stephen Watts Kearny was leading his army to several victories south of the Rio Grande. Nicholas Trist was able to get Mexico to sign the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, recognizing the Rio Grande boundary of Texas and ceding New Mexico and upper Californian to the US. Now that this triumph of Manifest Destiny was complete, the question of expanding slavery to the newly acquired territories arose. Polk assumed there would not be slavery there because it would simply not work in the natural conditions of the lands but southerners strongly disagreed. Northern congressmen tried to pass a resolution known as the Wilmot Proviso to exclude slavery from the new territory, extremely infuriating southerners and dividing the parties into a conflict of sections. ... • 57. Portrayal Of Judas In The Film King Of King e could do. The character Judas Iscariot, betrayer of Jesus, is often portrayed in a negative way according to many but when looking through the three films, The King of Kings, King of Kings, and Jesus Christ Superstar, he is considerably misunderstood as to what his real desires are. Although the four gospels tell similar stories, Judas is portrayed mostly similar but slightly different to each person. Between the four gospels Matthew and Mark represent Judas to be very similar way and the same for the gospels of Luke and John. Mark wrote his gospel from a Gentile, Pauline Christian view and he did not portray them in a very flattering way. He was known as the betrayer according to Mark s gospel but he had something different to say than ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this film Judas is played by an African American, which is uncommon, depicts Judas as loving Jesus until the end. Many people questioned why judas race was represented by his villainy and caused much controversy. The film of Jesus Christ Superstar is completely told by Judas perspective and was main part of the movie. Throughout the movie he didn t seem to be evil or have the predisposition to betray Jesus, he showed caring feelings and wanted what he thought was best for Jesus. Something that I thought was interesting was after he betrayed Jesus he realize what he had done and went to the high priest and begged for his money back and them to stop. He couldn t believe what he had done and hanged himself. Judas caused Jesus anger much throughout the movie, He seemed to enjoy the attention and did not like him trying to tell him to stop and shy away from the crowd so he begins to ignore him. When Judas sees that he himself has lost control as well, he realizes his mistake and the terrible, mysterious love that Jesus had for him. Judas echoes Mary s song, and goes on to see that his friend knew all along what would happen. In the end of the movie Judas committed suicide but his questions were never answered. He still remained angry with Jesus (and God) and continually asks him not to think wrong of him. He thought very highly of Jesus but just wanted to make sure he made the right ...
