An ancient shepherd named Magnets discovered magnetism when the nails in his shoes and the tip of his staff became stuck to a large black rock in Magnesia, Greece around 4,000 years ago. This rock was later named magnetite. Magnetism is the force of attraction or repulsion between magnetic materials due to the arrangement of electrons in their atoms. Magnets have several properties: they attract iron, point north-south when suspended freely, poles of the same type repel while opposite poles attract, and they can magnetize other iron pieces when rubbed against them.
