professional opinions about films about to be released.
• Provide synopsis of a film.
• Opinions of actors in the film, commentary on the narrative
and opinion on the overall making of the film can also be
found in magazine reviews.
• Presents unbiased reviews of a film.
• Introduce themes and subject matter helping people
understand whether film is of their taste or not.
• Another purpose is to market the film in a similar way to
the poster and to sell the film to the audience.
• It is important to note that different magazines will have
different opinions about a particular film.

3. Codes and conventions
• Film title – is usually in a large, bold font
• Release date
• Further details – genre, and then credits such as Director,
Screenplay, Cast, Sound track.
• Film tagline or quote/reference – from the actual film utilized as a
good introduction/gives greater knowledge about the film to the
audience
• Text body – into and summary, plot, aspects
• Intro and summary – it is very conventional to see short summary
of the film in the first paragraph. It will include aspects of the
timeline, location and the actual narrative.
• Plot – second paragraph continues with the synopsis of the film
with emphasis on the actual plot. Few references are given to end it
so that the film is not ruined for the audience.

4. • Aspects – the next paragraph of the film is likely to
highlight its positive aspects. It focuses on mise-en-scene,
story, setting, music, effects used. This is then followed by a
paragraph containing the negative aspects of the film.
• Ratings – to summarize the review, a star rating out of 5 is
given at the end.
• Enlarged letter – increased size for the first letter of the
review
• Autors name – of the article is usually at the bottom of the
page
• Images – with captions are usally placed at the top left
hand corner to attract the audience. Sometimes the image
covers one page of the maazine too.

6. • In order to make this magazine review on the
short film “Log Out” I had to investigate the
codes and conventions of magazine reviews.
From this I have greater knowledge about the
elements found in a traditional review.
• I believe I can design a magazine review for
my short film, however do some deeper
research into the content of film reviews.
