1. WHAT I LEARNT ABOUT REAL
MAGAZINE REVIEW CONVENTIONSThe typical conventions of a film poster are;
• A star rating out of 5
• A bold catchy title
• Picture(s) from the film
• The date that it was published
• A piece of writing that communicates the style, acting,
camera work, lighting sound and overall effect of the piece.
I learnt that it is important to remember that the person/people who create a magazine review are not
with the production company of the film. This means that sometimes fil reviews can hold some display
negative opinions on films or be critical so that they can advise other on the part that they thought were
bad. Due to the fact that I have contributed to the creation of our short film, when it can to making my
own magazine review I found this aspect slightly challenging and couldn’t help but be slightly biased.
This may make my review seem unrealistic at points. Another negative point about my own magazine
review is that I used a picture from the ending of the film, this makes my magazine review product look
unprofessional, this is because reviews are only there as a guideline for people whoa re consider
watching the film and by showing them the ending I have potentially ruined the whole film for them.
Despite this, I did include most of the conventions of a typical magazine review in my own review and I
2. WHAT I LEARNT ABOUT REAL FILM
POSTER CONVENTIONS
The typical conventions of a film poster are;
• A large graphic image
• Bold writing with a large display of the name of the film
• Critic opinions
• Film company logos
• Main stars name
• Name of film and production company
• Age certificate
I have learnt that most posters follow these typical conventions. All of these things give the
audience information relating to the film and are intended to persuade them to watch, this is
because they are created by the film and production company so they would like to
encourage views.
3. HOW MY USE OF CONVENTIONS MIGHT
ATTRACT AND APPEAL TO AN AUDIENCE
I feel as though as a group we worked really well in terms of insuring that all of the
conventions that we used for our film were carefully thought through; hence the fact that we
decided to conform to, challenge and develop certain conventions of short films and the
horror genre.
In my ancillary tasks, I conducted research into what it takes to make them look professional
and of a realistic standard. I done this by analysing various film posters and magazine reviews
to see what kind of things they included and what worked well. These factors influenced my
own work by helping my to carefully construct both of these products including all of the
things that worked well when I researched professional pieces.
I feel that due to my research and planning before creating any of my final products, I have
incorporated numerous conventions that work well and enhance the overall piece. Audiences
will be drawn to my final products because they will see similarities with my own work and
real media products.
