Succession “Losers”: What Happens to Executives Passed Over for the CEO Job?
By David F. Larcker, Stephen A. Miles, and Brian Tayan
Stanford Closer Look Series
Overview:
Shareholders pay considerable attention to the choice of executive selected as the new CEO whenever a change in leadership takes place. However, without an inside look at the leading candidates to assume the CEO role, it is difficult for shareholders to tell whether the board has made the correct choice. In this Closer Look, we examine CEO succession events among the largest 100 companies over a ten-year period to determine what happens to the executives who were not selected (i.e., the “succession losers”) and how they perform relative to those who were selected (the “succession winners”).
We ask:
• Are the executives selected for the CEO role really better than those passed over?
• What are the implications for understanding the labor market for executive talent?
• Are differences in performance due to operating conditions or quality of available talent?
• Are boards better at identifying CEO talent than other research generally suggests?

2. Name & Genre
I have decided to go with the name ‘Instrumental’ as the
word itself has a strong link with music and
‘instrumental’ is the word given to background music in
songs/music. The genres which my magazine will
include are hip-hop, R&B and rap as they are genres of
music which are really popular across the globe and has
a wide fan base therefore the magazine will effectively
appeal to more people resulting in more sales. I had
also chosen those genres because I had already
researched into those genres through a case study of
Beatz Mag.
3. Primary Artists
Within the magazine I will be including artists from different
areas around the world, dominantly America, some
artists include;
Chris Brown, Tyga,
Kirko Bangz, Nicki Minaj,
Jhene Aiko, Cassie
Etc.
4. Secondary Artists
Along with American artists, I will also include artists from
the United Kingdom, this includes artists such as
Tinie Tempah, Rita Ora,
Krept & Konan, Jessie J,
Etc.
5. What will be included?
Apart from information about artists, my magazine will
include the following;
- Popular Fashion Trends
- Music Reviews
- Music Charts
- Competitions
- Information about performances and concerts
- Magazine Review Page
6. Who might buy it?
Although the genres I have chosen have a wide audience
range, I will be focusing on males and females aged
between 12 and 26 as hip-hop, R&B and rap are very
popular genres listened by both genders across the
world, this is proven through the amount of views
achieved on YouTube for artists within these genres.
I will focus on each gender equally by balancing the
contents of the magazine, for example, the magazine
will include fashion trends for both male and females.
7. Publishing
‘Instrumental’ will be published by Bauer Media, the largest
privately owned publishing group in the whole of
Europe, as they are not currently publishing a magazine
which focuses on my chosen genres, therefore my
magazine will be filling a gap in the market and may
attract more customers/readers.
8. Pricing & Timings
The magazine will be sold at a price of £3.99 as it is
relatively affordable for readers to purchase, also it is
not a very high figure to spend every month, seeing as
the magazine will be published monthly.
Another reason for it being so cheap is that the magazine
will also be available as an app for mobile phones as the
majority of the target audience own a mobile phone so it
is easy for the magazine to be accessed.
9. Fonts & Colour Scheme
INSTRUMENTAL
INSTRUMENTAL
INSTRUMENTAL
INSTRUMENTAL
These are some font examples which I may consider, I have chosen
these 4 pre-set fonts as they are bold and eye catching. However, I
have also designed my own font which I would like to incorporate into
the design of the front page as it is a unique design. The image
representing my own font is a draft and not the final design. In terms
of the colour scheme of the magazine I will be using my using
the colours which are used in the Beatz Mag which I had
analysed for my case study. I have chosen those colours; black,
red and white, because the colours compliment each other and
look attractive when used together.
