2. Photography
Costume: Stereotypically artists in rock magazines wear dark colours and can wear quite plain
clothes, because of this the models will wear plain dark colors, however I want my magazine to
appeal to a wider audience as it will feature pop/rock music so the models will also be wearing
bright colours as well.
Setting: Settings in rock magazines can vary, they can be plain, in an abandoned warehouse or at
a live event. For my magazine I will use an outside setting, inside and a plain background for a
close up shot of a model.
Lighting: For my magazine I will use a range of lighting. For my front cover I will use key light to
focus on the models face, fill light so there are no shadows on the models face and a back light to
separate the model from the background. Inside the magazine I will use all 3 lights but not all of
them at the same time so I can create different effects e.g. using a back light and fill light will
make the model look like a silhouette but all show some features of the model because the fill
light is a soft light.
Props: Typically in a rock magazine the only props the models have are the musical instruments
they play . In my magazine I will feature smaller instruments as I want the focus to be more on
the artist than what instrument they play e.g drum sticks instead of a whole drum kit.
3. Genre Conventions
Images: The images I will use will be a mix of live photos, photo shoot, album covers and photos
taken specifically for the magazine.
Colour scheme: From my questionnaire the results showed most people wanted cool tones in the
magazine, however cool tones may seem boring so I will add bright colours on main stories
and the more important articles to show they are more important; so by having bright
colours as well it can separate more important articles to the less important ones.
In my magazine I will have the typical content of a rock magazine e.g. Album reviews, interviews,
posters ect. I will also feature a ‘day in the life’ feature and 5/20 feature which consists of the
artists choosing 5 numbers from 0 to 20 and each number represents a question they have to
answer.
4. Content of magazine
Album reviews: This
will give the reader an
insight to a music
album and can them
decide weather they
want to buy, or it can
introduce the audience
to the artist if they
haven’t heard of them
before.
Interviews: This will give the
audience the opportunity to send
in questions to an artist which they
will answer, this means the
different artists will get a variety of
questions asked and will be
specific to them rather than
general questions that every one
gets asked.
Posters: Posters are
usually thought of as
free and because the
target audience is
young the word free
catches their
attentions. Also
posters can be
considered as a
collectors item.
Day in the life: Every week a difference
artist/ band or member of a band will
give a day in the life of them, this could
be whilst they are on tour or recording
an album.
8 of 40: The artist being interviewed will
pick 8 numbers from 1 to 40 with each
number representing a question. By
doing this the audience will become
familiar with questions. This concept
was made by Rock Sound on their
YouTube channel and did 7 of 30 the
only other difference is my version will in
the magazine.
General news: There will be a general news section
to let the audience know some main headline
stories from week and how it has affected
musicians and the audience as they can tweet or
email in their opinions on a certain story.
5. Target Audience
My target audience is 16-25, by this age most teenagers have
grown out of having to have bright colours and cartoon
images to attracts them to something. From the results of my
questionnaire most people [aged 16-25] voted for a cool
tones colour scheme so, the design will feature mainly cool
tones [light/pastel/silver colours] making it very minimalistic
which will appeal to the older age range 18-25. There will be
some bright colours to highlight important features in the
magazine so it doesn’t look boring and adds some warmth to
the colour scheme. The content will attract the audience in
different ways e.g. Poster will attract the younger age range,
where as the general news section will appeal to the older age
range and they are more likely to tweet or email their views
on the news stories as they may have better understanding of
them.
