This document analyzes the conventions used in magazine design across three music magazines: MusicWeek, NME, and Kerrang. 2. Magazines; Front covers Both of these magazines are very similar in style and context whereas ‘MusicWeek’ is very plain yet bold this shows how the conventions of magazines work the same in a different style. Large bright masthead, follows the waterfall effect so that it can be easily found in shops. This magazine front cover follows the classic conventions of a newspaper article which writes the main article on the front page listing the content in columns. This makes the magazine look neat and follows on from each other. NME is a popular magazine following general conventions of pop/rock magazines, with bright colours and large images. Concluding to little writing. ‘Kerrang’ have also followed the general conventions of magazines by having a large masthead at the top and bright colours to draw the readers attention.

3. Contents Title; the contents style is in the same style as the front cover on all three magazines. This shows continuity and keeps the audience gripped on the magazine. Main picture; these pictures are intriguing to the reader and are generally based on the main article. The main article is often featured in the contents pages in more detail then other features, all three magazines have followed this convention.

4. Magazine A - Double page spread. The main title also relates to the article usually a slogan, quote or question. Other, smaller, images are widely used to break up the text and to add interest in the article. Pull quotes, used in this article, are often used to draw the readers attention. Again this is a classic convention. Main article is written in columns to make it easy to read, also following the conventions. The main image used here is supporting the article, if there was no graphology then the article would be boring to look at.

5. A pull quote is used here again, although here NME have used the pull quote as their title. The quote’s used are often taken from an interview with the person noticed in the article. The article here is very small yet gives the reader the incentive to read the rest of the magazine. It is more simple and straightforward to use large pictures and little text to catch the readers eye. Large pictures are used here, more to the point that they draw in the reader to look at the article rather than read it. Magazine B - Double page spread.

6. Pull quotes are used twice here, once covering the picture to give a hint on the article content and again as the title. Large picture is used here to present who the article is about, also followed by smaller pictures which support the tone of the article, e.g. Pictures of this man sticking his tongue out and pulling faces indicates an informal, humorous tone. The main article here is an interview therefore the questions, shown in bold, break the text up so that images are not needed to do this.
