Machu Picchu is a 15th century Inca citadel set high in the Andes Mountains in Peru. It contains magnificent stone ruins of temples, storage buildings, and residences. The ruins are located above the Urubamba Valley in a remote area that helped preserve it since the Inca abandoned it in the 16th century. It is surrounded by lush cloud forests home to over 350 orchid species and animals like spectacled bears, dwarf deer, and over 400 bird species. The site was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site for its cultural significance and architectural achievements.
