Machu Picchu is an important Inca citadel set high in the Andes Mountains in Peru. It is located approximately 100 km northwest of Cuzco and sits at an altitude of 2,400 meters. The Incas built Machu Picchu in the 15th century and it is divided into three areas: two residential sectors and one agricultural sector. It was abandoned just over 100 years after being built. Today it is one of the most significant archaeological sites left from the Inca era.
