THE WORLD OF RESEARCH PUBLISHING
Definition: Publishing of research is a formal attempt to collate, examine, proof read
and make academic findings available to a particular public.
Publishing of research can take the form of a report, dissertation, thesis, technical
report or conference paper.
In order to guide one’s research at Masters level, a few principles must be borne in
mind:

1. The researcher/student needs to distinguish between common information and
academic information. If you want to know what a computer is you can use
Google. If you want to know about how computer manufacturing affects the GNP
of China you will most likely use Ebsco, Proquest or Cambridge.
Why? Because you are NOT looking for common information. You are
seeking academic information…..at Masters level you would want?
2. Academic information is ALWAYS refereed. That is, it has been subjected to
rigorous testing by fellow researchers or peers.

TYPES OF PUBLICATIONS
1. Working Paper: is a scientific paper that IS IN PROGRESS. A DRAFT shared between
authors wherein thoughts, ideas, feedback is obtained and acted upon before
submission to a conference of academic journal.
2. Reports: are document that contain the completed results of an investigation,
usually of the work undertaken by one of more investigators, and is authored
either by one author or a panel of authors. Such documents preen content
intended for a particular audience.
3. Technical Report: is a report that deals with some or other operation, mechanism,
procedure or specialist details relevant to a particular organisation or entity. Such
reports may or may not be formally published.
4. Conference Paper: This type of publication is complex, inasmuch as it involves
stringent PEER REVIEW. Authors within a specific research domain usually vet or
review the intended conference paper.

The process used by publishers and editors of academic journals to provide a chance
for scholars to examine and critique a paper or monograph before it is published to
help ensure its integrity and veracity.

• How Databases Are Indexed and Indexing Terms
• Why is it important to know how a database is indexed? This informs the
investigator as to how the database is set up and what key index terms have been
used in putting the database together.

Advanced Information Literacy Techniques
1. Boolean Searching: Involves using the key terms AND, OR , NOT
Example: Computers AND ICT
2. Truncated Searching: Involves using articles such as * and ! in order to determine
the different etymological forms of a root key term.
Example: Compu* will retrieve COMPUTE,COMPUTER,COMPUTERS,etc
3. Wildcard Searching: Involves using ? and * within a word to retrieve different
spellings or morphological structures of a word.
Example: B?rth will retrieve both BERTH and BIRTH

Criteria for Evaluation of Sources
1. Who are the authors and what are their affiliations? Are their works of a technical
report nature or are their works intended for and published within academic
journals?
2. Are the journals or publications from academic publishers?
3. What is the length and format of the article or report?
4. Do the authors have any formal connection to a university or research institute?
5. From the bibliography, can you establish a trail of research and citation patterns?
