EVALUATION OF CORE COMPETENCIES AT BASELINE: HOW CAN THIS INFORMATION USED? Monica L. Lypson MD1,2, Hilary M. Haftel, MD MHPE2,3, Sonya Miller, MD4, Joel Purkiss, PhD5 1Office of Graduate Medical Education, 2Department of Internal Medicine, 3Department of Pediatrics, 4 Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, 5Office of Medical Education,  University of Michigan Health System, Ann Arbor, MI, USA METHODS ABSTRACT BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The Post-Graduate Orientation Assessment (POA) was developed to determine intern baseline proficiency. Since 2002 there have been 1342 residents who have taken the POA, 1255 of those are interns. POA Content: 	1.	Focuses on knowledge and skills needed during the first 6-18 weeks of their residency. 	2.	Emphasizes clinical situations that are often encountered without formal supervision. METHODS: 	- Assessments include: hand-off, informed consent, geriatric functional assessment (or pediatric history taking), aseptic technique, evidence-based medicine, diagnostic images, critical laboratory values, order writing, cross-cultural communication, surgical fire safety, and pain assessment.  RESULTS: 	- The POA Overall Score represents a moderate, statistically significant predictor of future performance. CONCLUSIONS: 	1.	Hospital orientation proves to be an ideal time to gather initial performance data on entering post-graduate trainees.   	2.	Baseline performance on the ACGME general competencies maybe a predictor of future board performance. NEXT STEPS: 	- Many institutions/ program have adopted an intern assessment.   	- Further work is needed on the predictive value of the POA. 	- Curriculum efforts must be adjusted to reflect intern deficits.
