The lymphatic system removes fluid and antigens from tissues and exposes antigens to immune cells. Fluid is moved through contraction of muscles and valves in lymphatic vessels. Lymph nodes filter lymph and concentrate immune cells for immune surveillance. B and T lymphocytes develop in bone marrow and thymus respectively and confer specific immunity through antibodies and effector molecules. The immune system protects against infection through barriers, inflammation, and specific responses while sometimes overreacting in allergies or autoimmunity.
