North Carolina’s thriving biotechnology industry, top-notch science, unbeatable climate for business and great quality of life create the ideal place for a biomanufacturing training facility like BTEC. More than 50 companies manufacturing biologics, pharmaceuticals and diagnostics already call North Carolina home. These companies — Biogen Idec, GlaxoSmithKline, Novozymes, Pfizer Animal Health, Talecris, and Wyeth — operate some of the largest or most unique facilities of their kind.This map shows the manufacturing facilities located throughout North Carolina.Biomanufacturing companies require trained technicians to operate these plants efficiently and in compliance with FDA rules. NC State has collaborated with other universities, industry, the North Carolina Biosciences Organization and the Biotechnology Center to produce and deliver workforce-training programs: BTEC is the world’s largest hands-on training location dedicated to learning the ins and outs of biomanufacturing.
- BTEC employs an unparalleled system of advanced, hands-on training and education in an environment using facilities and equipment that match those in place at the world's leading biomanufacturing companies. BTEC is an international center of excellence for the development of the next generation of cell protein and cell engineering techniques, bioreactors, downstream processes and technologies for high throughput on-line analysis and optimization.
- From BTEC FY09 Annual Report: In an effort to globalize its academic programs, BTEC investigated several potential international collaborations during the year. BTEC agreed to collaborate with the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez, and the University of Strasbourg, France. Through NC State’s Global Training Initiative, BTEC supported an unpaid internship for a government official from Japan. Through its Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez, BTEC is supporting an undergraduate intern during the summer of 2009. BTEC provided hands-on training on biomanufacturing equipment for the National Nuclear Security Administration’s International Nonproliferation Export Control Program during March 2009. BTEC staff also taught “Overview of Fermentation of APIs – Industry” at the manufacturing training event held by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in June 2009. Throughout 2008, BTEC developed and delivered a series of four training courses in biomanufacturing for FDA inspectors and field personnel, per the terms of a contract signed in September 2007.
