Editor's Notes

  1. So who should we logically compare ourselves to: This Venn diagram categorizes the Top 50 Research universities in the country by “those with Medical Schools,” “those with Vet Schools,” “those that are Land Grants,” and combinations of each. We’ve indicated Private institutions with the light blue color. So NC State falls into the category of Land Grant Universities with a Vet School. Our Peers are Texas A&M, University of Illinois, Purdue, and VA Tech, and they’re ranked 22, 23 and 36 and 50. We’re 47. Research and Graduate Studies plans to implement initiatives to pull NC State up in these rankings. And we’ll talk about those in a minute. I want you to keep our peers in mind as we look at another set of rankings. We’re still #47 – but this is actually moderately good news! U of Colorado, Indiana U and LSU appear on the top 50 chart because they are now reporting aggregated data for all campuses. Institutions that aggregate all campuses (according to NSF) are denoted by a “+”.#25 U of CO (all campuses) = $535M, which includes:U of CO at Boulder ($261M), U of CO at Colorado Springs ($8M) and U of CO Health Sciences Center at Denver ($266M)#39 Indiana U (all campuses) = $412M, which includes: Indiana U at Bloomington and Indiana U/Purdue at Indianapolis – not reported at all for individual campuses#42 LSU (all campuses) = $391M, which includes: LSU at Baton Rouge ($273M), LSU at New Orleans ($59M) and LSU at Shreveport ($34M) plus others. LSU at Baton Rouge is a true peer (i.e., vet school, land grant, NO med school)NOTE: We’ve pulled ahead of Michigan State and U of GA, both of which have med schools!!!Source: http://www.nsf.gov/statistics/nsf10311/pdf/nsf10311.pdf
