The project
This KTP supported RB to reduce the irritancy potential of
their skin products formulation by developing a new in vitro
(test-tube experiment) modelling strategy to understand how
topical formulations can impact on healthy and compromised
skin.
Project Outcomes
The partnership provided the company with the opportunity
to acquire new skills and techniques in skin and hair-associated
product development which resulted in a competitive
advantage in the personal care field. They identified gaps
and strategies relating to decision modelling methods and
developed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to guide
future in vitro irritancy testing.
The University were able to gain new knowledge in human 3D
epidermis, a greater understanding of toxicology issues relating
to personal care products and ingredient insight for skin
products formulation. Professor Des Tobin and colleagues are
continuing to develop research relationships with the company.

The Associate
“The KTP helped me learn a good combination
of transferable skills and specialist skills and
prepared me for my next career move into
industry.”
Dr. ThaoNguyen Nguyen
The KTP enhanced Dr. Nguyen’s transferrable skills in project
management, communication and influencing. It also helped
her gain a greater understanding of the culture of a fast-paced
commercial world and how to remain competitive and how that
differs to academia.
During the period of the KTP ThaoNguyen undertook training
courses and attended events and conferences relevant to
the project. As a result ThaoNguyen won an IUPAC (United
Nations of Chemistry) Young Observer prize from the Royal
Society of Chemistry to represent the KTP and present at the
World Chemistry Leadership Meeting 2013. She was invited to
speak at an industry innovation forum at PACCON International
Conference 2014 and to attend SET for BRITAIN, House of
Commons to interact with MPs, industry and academic leaders.
Dr. Nguyen also received 3 job offers in industry during and after
the KTP.
Dr Nguyen said “I highly recommend KTP to high-flyers who
embrace challenges and changes. The KTP is an excellent
platform to transfer skills acquired from academia into commercial
applications and help launch a long-term career in industry.”

between a graduate, an organisation and a university.
Covering a huge range of projects, KTP is one of the largest
graduate recruitment programmes across the UK.
KTP has worked with over 3,000 organisations from micro-
sized to large businesses such as Unilever and Rolls Royce.
KTP have over 140 knowledge bases and over 6,000

Through a KTP project, students can play a key role in
managing and implementing tactical or strategic development
in the business and transferring knowledge between the
business and the University. KTP Associates work in the
business, own their project and are supported by experienced
staff from the business and the knowledge base.
The project lasts for a period of between 6 months to
