What is HOUSEKEEPING ?
• Housekeeping refers to day-to-day cleanliness, tidiness and good order in all
parts of the workplace.
• Good housekeeping is the foundation of a safe, healthy and pleasant
workplace.
• It is essential that all areas be kept clean, orderly, and with all necessary
things in the proper places.
• Good housekeeping provides a clean and pleasant working environment. It
also helps prevent accidents in the workplace and aids the efficient operation
of the workplace.
• Good housekeeping can usually be achieved by routine cleaning of the
premises, proper storage of materials, periodic disposal of rubbish, regular
maintenance of facilities and full staff co-operation.

Housekeeping and Efficiency is the 5-S system.
• 5S is the acronym for five Japanese words:

items.
• SORT OUT THE ITEMS AND DISCARD THE UNWANTED
– Make a list of all the items in the department.
– The list should include raw material, finished product, tools,
tackles, dust bin, facilities like chair, table, bins etc. nothing
should be left unlisted.
– Appropriate authority should decide which items can be disposed
off and which items need to be kept in the department.
– Items marked for disposal should be disposed off in a safe
manner.

proper order for prompt usage.
While doing Seiton keep in mind :
 The right location where the things will be used.
 FIFO (First in First out) arrangement.
 Labeling of the area and the equipment is very important.
 Keep proper gaps between two things to avoid confusion.

• Sweep your workplace thoroughly so that there is no
dust/dirt/scrap anywhere.
• The area should say “ Who I’m” and its neatness should give you
a natural welcome.
While doing Seiso keep in mind :
Cleaning should be done regularly.
All the nooks and corners should be cleaned.
Keep all the labels intact.
All the labels should be correct, visible and legible to all.

• Always aim at maintaining the standard level of cleanliness,
hygiene and visual control.
• Keep all the 4 M’s ( Man., Machine, Material and Method) intact,
a lapse in any one of them will make you loose the rest of the
three
While doing Seiketsu keep in mind :
The standards should be arrived at unanimously.
Always keep the standards flexible to changes and improvements.

Thursday, March 12, 2020 • One system that has been used by many industries to improve their Housekeeping and Efficiency is the 5-S system. • 5S is the acronym for five Japanese words: Sort (Seiri) Remove unneeded items. Set in Order (Seiton) Arrange Shine (Seiso) Clean Standardize (Seiketsu) Method Sustain (Shitsuke) Maintain

Thursday, March 12, 2020 Sort (Seiri) Remove unneeded items. • SORT OUT THE ITEMS AND DISCARD THE UNWANTED – Make a list of all the items in the department. – The list should include raw material, finished product, tools, tackles, dust bin, facilities like chair, table, bins etc. nothing should be left unlisted. – Appropriate authority should decide which items can be disposed off and which items need to be kept in the department. – Items marked for disposal should be disposed off in a safe manner.

While doing Seiton keep in mind :  The right location where the things will be used.  FIFO (First in First out) arrangement.  Labeling of the area and the equipment is very important.  Keep proper gaps between two things to avoid confusion.

Shine (Seiso) Clean Thursday, March 12, 2020 • Sweep your workplace thoroughly so that there is no dust/dirt/scrap anywhere. • The area should say “ Who I’m” and its neatness should give you a natural welcome. While doing Seiso keep in mind : Cleaning should be done regularly. All the nooks and corners should be cleaned. Keep all the labels intact. All the labels should be correct, visible and legible to all.

Standardize (Seiketsu) Method Thursday, March 12, 2020 • Always aim at maintaining the standard level of cleanliness, hygiene and visual control. • Keep all the 4 M’s ( Man., Machine, Material and Method) intact, a lapse in any one of them will make you loose the rest of the three While doing Seiketsu keep in mind : The standards should be arrived at unanimously. Always keep the standards flexible to changes and improvements. Standards should be known to all and displayed.
