HOSPITALITY
 The word “HOSPITALITY” has ancient
roots, dating from the earliest of roman
Civilization.
 It is derived from the Greek word
“HOSPITARE” meaning “TO SERVE A
GUEST”
The basic requirement of a guest/travelers during the Roman
Civilization
 Food
 Beverages
 Lodging/accommodation
Ancient History
 The concept of hospitality is extreme old; it is mentioned in
writing dating back to ancient Greece and Rome and Biblical
times.
Biblical References:
“And she brought her first-born son, and wrapped him in
swalding clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no
room for them in the inn”(LUKE 2:7)
 During the ancient times people felt required to be hospitable for
the following reasons:
1.They felt that hospitality to the strangers was necessary to their
religious well-being
2.They where hospitable only because of their own superstitious
fears.
Modern-Day-Thinking – providing of hospitality was merely a
result of “GIVE AND TAKE” philosophy
 The group of people who travels during the ancient
times:

 Lodging industry developed because of the need to provide
accommodations for travelers
 The early reference to the inn is found in the Bible when
Joseph, Christ's foster father was told, “there is no room at
the inn.
 Pompeii reveal that the romans had developed the concept
of inns into trade
The history of the of the hotel in its present formgoes back to
the middle ages
o In the 13th and 14th centuries, German
and English literature made frequent
reference to the inn
 The development of the inn in the medival
period was due to the improvement in
security in many European societies.
 It became safe to travel
The industrial Revolution
 In 1700s and 1500s ,There was a greater demand for
accommodation as people migrated to the cities to work.
 The emerging middle class could afford accommodations when
traveling away from their home
 The development of spas helped the growth of the hotel
industry.
 By 1750, Brighton,Blackpool,Southern and other English
seaside resorts were attracting bathers.
 In early American inns Manhattan’s fraunces tavern.

 It led to establishment of the roadside hotel
 Motor/motel emerged
THE PINEAPPLE TRADITION
 The pineapple enjoyed a rich andromantic heritage as a
symbol of WELCOME, FRIENDSHIP, WARMTH and
CHEER and HOSPITALITY.
 Pineapple were brought back from West Indians by
European explorer and become the flavored fruit to serve to
the royalty and elite.
 The pineapple has been internationally recognized as
symbol of HOSPITALITY

 Ellsworth M. Statler –
 Father of the modern Commercial
Hotel Industry.
• He was the originator of the hotel chain concept known as
Statler in the year 1863-1928.
• He opened his first hotel in Buffalo, New York in 1901.An
individual room with private baths was his special features.
• In 1954,He sold the Statler Chain of hotels to Conrad Hilton.

• In 1887-1979 , He became a
successful hotelier after the World War II
• In 1919, he bought the Mobley Hotel in Cisco, Texas
• In 1925,he built the Hilton in Dallas, Texas
• His acquisition during the WWII includes the 3,000 rooms
Steven Hotel(now the Chicago Hilton)and the palmer House in
Chicago and plaza and Waldorf Astoria in New York City.
• In 1946,he formed the Hilton Hotel Corporation.
• In 1948, he formed the Hilton International Company , which
to number more than 125 hotels.

Garden Inns, Doubletree, Embassy Suites, Hampton Inns, Harrison
Conference Centers, Homewood Suites by Hilton, Red Lion Hotels and Inns,
and Conrad International.

He was a hotelier at the Grand National Hotel in Lucerne , Switzerland
because of his management abilities, “The hotel became one of the most
popular in Europe and Cesar Ritz became One of the most respected
hoteliers in Europe.

 In 1893, William Waldorf Astor launched the 13-story Waldorf
Hotel at Fifth Avenue near thirty-fourth Street in New York
City

• Four years later, the waldorf was joined by the 17-story Astoria Hotel ,
erected on an adjacent site by William Waldorf Astor’s cousin , John Jacob
Astor IV. The cousins built a corridor the connected the two hotels, which
became known by a single hyphenated name, the Waldorf Astoria
• In 1929, after decades of hosting distinguished visitors from around the
world , the Waldorf-Astoria closed its doors to make room for the Empire
State Building.
 The 2,200-room ,42-floor Waldorf-Astoria Hotel was rebuilt with the new
president Herbert Hoover.
• In 1988, the hotel underwent a $150 million restoration.
 On January 1993, It was designated a New York City landmark.

• meeting the needs of cost-conscious business travellers and pleasure

Lodging Industry (Accommodation)

  • 2. Lodging or boarding  where you live or stay, especially when you are on holiday or when you are staying somewhere for a short amount of time .
  • 3. HOSPITALITY  The word “HOSPITALITY” has ancient roots, dating from the earliest of roman Civilization.  It is derived from the Greek word “HOSPITARE” meaning “TO SERVE A GUEST”
  • 4. The basic requirement of a guest/travelers during the Roman Civilization  Food  Beverages  Lodging/accommodation
  • 5. Ancient History  The concept of hospitality is extreme old; it is mentioned in writing dating back to ancient Greece and Rome and Biblical times. Biblical References: “And she brought her first-born son, and wrapped him in swalding clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn”(LUKE 2:7)  During the ancient times people felt required to be hospitable for the following reasons: 1.They felt that hospitality to the strangers was necessary to their religious well-being 2.They where hospitable only because of their own superstitious fears.
  • 6. Modern-Day-Thinking – providing of hospitality was merely a result of “GIVE AND TAKE” philosophy  The group of people who travels during the ancient times:  Missionaries

Historyof the accommodations or lodging industry  Lodging industry developed because of the need to provide accommodations for travelers  The early reference to the inn is found in the Bible when Joseph, Christ's foster father was told, “there is no room at the inn.  Pompeii reveal that the romans had developed the concept of inns into trade
  • 9. The history of the of the hotel in its present formgoes back to the middle ages o In the 13th and 14th centuries, German and English literature made frequent reference to the inn  The development of the inn in the medival period was due to the improvement in security in many European societies.  It became safe to travel

The industrial Revolution  In 1700s and 1500s ,There was a greater demand for accommodation as people migrated to the cities to work.  The emerging middle class could afford accommodations when traveling away from their home  The development of spas helped the growth of the hotel industry.  By 1750, Brighton,Blackpool,Southern and other English seaside resorts were attracting bathers.  In early American inns Manhattan’s fraunces tavern.
  • 13. The introduction and Development of the automobileindustry  It led to establishment of the roadside hotel  Motor/motel emerged

THE PINEAPPLE TRADITION  The pineapple enjoyed a rich andromantic heritage as a symbol of WELCOME, FRIENDSHIP, WARMTH and CHEER and HOSPITALITY.  Pineapple were brought back from West Indians by European explorer and become the flavored fruit to serve to the royalty and elite.  The pineapple has been internationally recognized as symbol of HOSPITALITY
  • 15. Pioneers in the HospitalityIndustry  Ellsworth M. Statler –  Father of the modern Commercial Hotel Industry. • He was the originator of the hotel chain concept known as Statler in the year 1863-1928. • He opened his first hotel in Buffalo, New York in 1901.An individual room with private baths was his special features. • In 1954,He sold the Statler Chain of hotels to Conrad Hilton.
  • 17.  Conrad Hilton -king of the Innkeepers. • In 1887-1979 , He became a successful hotelier after the World War II • In 1919, he bought the Mobley Hotel in Cisco, Texas • In 1925,he built the Hilton in Dallas, Texas • His acquisition during the WWII includes the 3,000 rooms Steven Hotel(now the Chicago Hilton)and the palmer House in Chicago and plaza and Waldorf Astoria in New York City. • In 1946,he formed the Hilton Hotel Corporation. • In 1948, he formed the Hilton International Company , which to number more than 125 hotels.
  • 20.  Hilton created the first major chain of modern American hotels, that is a group of hotels all of which follow the standard operating procedures such as Marketing , reservations , quality of service ,food and Beverage operations  Hilton Hotels have expanded their entrepreneurship to include Hilton Garden Inns, Doubletree, Embassy Suites, Hampton Inns, Harrison Conference Centers, Homewood Suites by Hilton, Red Lion Hotels and Inns, and Conrad International.  Cesar Ritz He was a hotelier at the Grand National Hotel in Lucerne , Switzerland because of his management abilities, “The hotel became one of the most popular in Europe and Cesar Ritz became One of the most respected hoteliers in Europe.
  • 21.  Grand National Hotel  William Waldorf Astor and John Jacob Astor IV  In 1893, William Waldorf Astor launched the 13-story Waldorf Hotel at Fifth Avenue near thirty-fourth Street in New York City
  • 24. • Four years later, the waldorf was joined by the 17-story Astoria Hotel , erected on an adjacent site by William Waldorf Astor’s cousin , John Jacob Astor IV. The cousins built a corridor the connected the two hotels, which became known by a single hyphenated name, the Waldorf Astoria • In 1929, after decades of hosting distinguished visitors from around the world , the Waldorf-Astoria closed its doors to make room for the Empire State Building.  The 2,200-room ,42-floor Waldorf-Astoria Hotel was rebuilt with the new president Herbert Hoover. • In 1988, the hotel underwent a $150 million restoration.  On January 1993, It was designated a New York City landmark.
  • 26.  Kemmons Wilson  He started the holiday Inn chain in the early 1950s, opening his first Holiday Inn in Memphis, Tennessee  He introduced the Central Reservation System

  • 30.  J.W. Marriott and J.W. Marriott Jr. • J.W. Marriott (1900-1985) founded his hotel empire in 1957 with the Twin Bridges Marriott Motor Hotel in Virginia (Washington, D.C , area) • In 1987,Marriott completed expansion of its Worldwide Reservation Center in Omaha ,Nebraska, making it the largest single-site reservation operation in U.S. hotel history

  • 32.  Ernest Henderson  Ernest Herderson and Robert Moore  Ernest Hendrson and Robert Moore started the Sheraton chain in 1937  Sheraton was the first hotel chain to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Robert Moore
  • 34.  In 1968, Sheraton was acquired by ITTC Corporation as a wholly owned subsidiary, and ambitious development plans were put into place to create a truly global network of properties  Ray Schultz • In the early 1980s, Ray Schultz founded the Hampton Inn hotels, which was a company in the Holiday Inn Corporation. • This type of hotel was tagged as limited-service, • meeting the needs of cost-conscious business travellers and pleasure travellers.
