TRAVEL
BY TRAIN
vanessa
The reasons why travelers choose the train
as a transportation mode are:
 Cost
 Comfort
 Safety
 Convenience
 Ability to get up and walk around
 Ability to see interesting things enroute
and
 Ability to arrive at the destination rested
and relaxed
19TH AND EARLY 20TH CENTURIES
oTrains stimulated travel within
the US, Canada, and Europe
1841
oBritain had its first organized
train tour
1851
oThree million
Englishman
boarded the train to
see the Great
Exhibit in London
1869
oThe first transcontinental route
in the US was completed
oDuring the latter part of the
1800’s & the first part of
1900’s, the train connected
major population centers &
popular spas & resorts such as
Niagara Falls, Long Beach,
Saratoga; New Jersey & Las
Vegas
NIAGARA FALLS
LONG BEACH
1963
long distance rail travel boosted when
George M. Pullman built the Pullman
coach, a luxury first class sleeping and
dining facility.
(the popularity of the train lasted only
for a brief period after World War II
when the automobile began to gain
more popularity as a passenger
transportation mode)
GEORGE PULLMAN
PULLMAN COACH
October 1970
o The Rail Passenger Service Act became a law
o Amtrak began its operations May 1971 and was
intended to be a profit-making corporation
Via Rail
o Created in 1977, Canada’s equivalent of Amtrak
o (both organizations have been successful in
increasing passenger volumes because they have
done so by improving the equivalent and services
they offer and by promoting the benefits of
travelling by train more effectively.
TRAVELERS FAVORED THE TRAIN FOR THE
FOLLOWING REASONS:
Safety
Ability to look out the train and see the
interesting things enroute.
Ability to get up and walk around.
Arriving at the destination rested and
relaxed.
Personal comfort
Japans shinkansen or bullet
train – first sensational rail
accomplishment after World
War II. Operations began in
1964 in time for the Olympics
in Japan. (Japan has the best
railroad system in the world,
with 26, 000 fast and efficient
trains scheduled a day..
 .
JAPAN SHINKANSEN
 Tres Grande Vitesse – France supertrain
TRAVEL BY SHIP
(travel by ship became prominent
in the meddle of 19th century)
Ocean liners used to provide an
important link to passengers
between continents.
TWO MAJOR ROLES OF WATER TRANSPORT IN
TRAVEL AND TOURISM
 Ferrying – last for one day or even a shorter
length of time.
 Cruising
Cruise ship took the place of
regularly-scheduled
passenger ships. Many
passenger ships were
converted into cruise ships.
Others that had historical
value were converted into
tourist attractions.
CRUISING
3 TYPES OF CRUISES
 Short cruises = one week or less
 Intermediate – long cruises = last one to four weeks
 Long cruises = go around the world and take one to
three months
 (short duration cruises are more popular because
they require less vacation time and are less
expensive.)
 (other reasons are travelers can satisfy their desire
to experience new environments and see new
cultures and still bring with them comfort, safety
and convenience of home. Ex of short cruises in
three night cruises from Los Angeles to
Mexico/Manila to Davao.)
Caribbean – is the World's
largest cruise destination.
Mediterranean,
Scandinavia, Alaska and
the Pacific – other major
cruise destinations.
