Rendlesham Forest had a large variety of hills and trees that provided many options for filming, though the filming locations were limited by how far they could walk from the car each day before it got dark. Foxhall Heath, which was close to where the filmmaker lived, was used for scenes requiring trees further apart or climbing trees. Needham Lakes was scouted first due to its proximity, and a place was found along the edge of the Gipping River that looked suitable for a scene taking place at the edge of a forest overlooking a river.
