Evaluate the evolution of
historically large
corporations to meet the
challenges of a converging
media market
What large corporations have evolved to the
converging media market?
Large corporations have evolved to adapt to the converging media
market to ensure they are still relevant on the market and are up to
date, in this presentation I am going to discuss some examples of
large corporations that have evolved to adapt to the converging
media market and are still ever changing and updating to this day.
Here are examples of a couple of large corporations that have
evolved to the converging media market;
● Google
● Amazon
Google
The Google company was launched in 1998 to market
Google Search which is now the most widely used web-based
search engine. As soon as the search engine proved it was
successful, Google quickly became one of the worlds largest
media companies. To ensure it was competing with other
search engines out there and it was relevant on the market it
had to adapt to the converging media market, the Google
company did this by launching other products these were as
follows;
●Google News (2002)
●Gmail (2004)
●Google Maps (2005)
●Google Chrome (2008)
●Google+ (2011)
Google News
Google News was launched in
2002, it is a news website and app
developed by Google. It releases
all of the latest news articles and
the app is available to download
on Android and IOS. It was
launched to adapt and meet the
challenges of the converging
media market, Google introduced
many other products around their
brand to stay successful in the
competitive market. Because of
the challenges of the converging
media market BBC, ITV and many
other big news corporations
released both a website and an
app available for download across
IOS and Android.
Gmail
Gmail is Google's email provider,
this is an example of how Google
met the challenges of a converging
media market as it was a product
they launched to stay relevant and
up to date with the competitive
market, Yahoo Mail, Outlook and
Bing also came out with email
providing services. Gmail today is
one of the most used email services
worldwide, it's very accessible as
there is an app and also a website
as well as it being compatible with
most devices,people can get
notifications through on their
phones when they get sent an email
via Gmail which makes the app
appealing to all audiences.
Gmail began with a search feature
that was something that was
favoured over other major email
services. This was something
Google used to make the email
service different and stand out from
the other major email providers due
to the competitive market which was
a challenge that came with the
converging media market.
Google Maps
Google Maps was launched by
Google in 2005, it offers a map
service to Google, it pin points all
major roads, places, buildings and
houses in a map format making it
easy for users to find directions or
find a certain place. Google Maps
are forever meeting the challenges
of the converging media market by
continuously adding new features
for example you can now use it as
a SatNav by selecting your A to B
route and you can also find out
how long your journey will take.
Google Maps is a pre installed app
on most Android devices however
it is used worldwide on all devices
it is compatible on.
Google+
Due to the challenges of the
converging media market Google
realised that it must be part of the
social future, so in 2011 Google
launched its very own social media
network called Google Plus. Google
Plus is quickly making its place
among other social networks such
as Facebook and Twitter.
However due to giants such as
Instagram and Messenger Google
Plus never really stood a chance
however Google are still trying to
make something of it and meet the
challenges of the converging
market.
Google have tried to make Google
Plus a wide convergence product by
introducing 'hangouts' that allow
users to chat among themselves,
watch YouTube videos together and
share documents via Google Drive.
In other words, Google have tried to
use all of its products to get over the
challenges of the converging market
being so competitive when it comes
to social networks. Google Plus is
still available to this day and is still
updating.
Google now
Google to this day are still meeting the challenges of the converging
market, they are still introducing more features, products, apps and
even devices. Here are some examples;
●Google assistant (a smart speaker that speaks to you)
●Google's Pixel smartphones
●Google Pixelbook laptops
●Google Wifi
●Daydream View (virtual reality headsets)
Amazon
Amazon started out in 1994 due to Jeff Bezos the creator of Amazon
deciding that books were the best product to sell online, amazon.com
promised to deliver any book to any reader at any time which was the
ethos of the company. Over the years the company expanded rapidly in
other areas such as music and videos. By 1999 the company was selling
electronics, video games, software, home improvements, toys and much
more. With the pressure of the converging market came challenges,
Amazon had to release something new to the market to ensured it
stayed current therefore in 2007 Amazon launched the Kindle which is an
e-reader for e-books. Here are a few of the products that were introduced
because of the converging media market;
● Kindle/ Kindle Fire
● Amazon Fire TV/ Firestick
● Amazon Prime
● Amazon Fire Phone/ Amazon Echo
Amazon Kindle
The Amazon Kindle was launched in 2007
as Amazon wanted to introduce something
new to the market especially as the
marketing of selling books online was
moving fast. With this then came releases of
different models on Kindle such as the
Paperwhite, Voyage and recently they have
released the Oasis 2.
As technology improved, Amazon knew that
they needed to release something more hi-
tech than just to kindle to keep current with
the converging media market, so they
released the Kindle Fire which is a tablet
computer with an Android operating system,
this was launched because tablets in 2012
became the new craze making Amazon want
to create their own version.
Amazon Fire TV / Firestick
In April 2014 Amazon launched Fire TV which is a
set-top box system similar to the likes of Apple TV
and Google Chromecast. Fire TV allows for
streaming videos from sites such as Amazon Prime
(their own video streaming site) similar to giants like
Netflix, this was launched because video streaming
became very popular for on-demand TV, films etc so
Amazon wanted to launch something that was
current and would be competitive within the
converging media market.
In October 2014 Amazon announced the Firestick
which is a device that you can plug into your TV and
the Amazon Fire TV service would be available. The
Firestick was launched because it brought something
new to the market by it being very portable but also
made people warm to Amazon's Prime service and
Amazon's other products.
Amazon Prime
Amazon Prime in itself has faced
challenges with the converging media
market. It started out in 2005 as a
membership that offered free two-day
shipping and discount on one day shipping
rates. Because of the competitive market
Amazon incorporated Amazon Video, Prime
Music and Amazon Drive to the Amazon
Prime membership which introduced new
products to the membership encouraging
more people to get the membership due to
the extent it offered.
Amazon Prime met the challenges of the
converging media market as it converged
different products into one encouraging
people to buy into the membership as it had
features no other membership had.
Amazon Fire Phone / Amazon Echo
Amazon entered the smart phone society by launching the Fire Phone
however it did not meet the challenges of the converging market as there
was negative feedback and not enough sales to improve or keep up the
phone therefore Amazon discontinued the phone in August 2015.
Another product that was launched due to the converging market was
Amazon Echo, which was launched in 2014 and is a brand of smart
speakers enabled with Alexa which is a smart voice-controlled feature,
similar to Siri on Apple devices. In 2016 they updated the model by
introducing 'Echo Dot' which is a smaller and more affordable version of
Echo. This was something Amazon launched to compete with other voice-
controlled products due to the converging media market.
Amazon now
Amazon to this day are still facing challenges with the converging
media market, this is encouraging them to release more products that
are current and have a competitive market.
The challenges that come with the converging media market will impact on my
proposed idea as the fashion and music industry are fast moving industries
meaning the app will have to be kept up to date at all times to ensure we are not
missing any new music videos, new fashion trends within the music industry etc.
This is crucial as users of the app will expect the app to update itself with the
newest content, if it doesn't update then it could potentially make people delete it
and leave negative reviews which will affect the apps success.
Another challenge that could affect my app would be the growth of similar
fashion apps, for example ASOS is accessible as it has a website and an app, if
my product doesn't have a website for example it could fall behind in the
competitive market and make people not buy into the app as much especially as
some people like to shop on a website rather than an app as they think it's more
secure.
How will these challenges impact on
my proposal?
Will your proposed idea support any organisations
to overcome the converging media market
challenges?
For my proposed idea of an app that allows users to watch music
videos, exclusive interviews and buy into fashion within the music
industry we will be supporting organisations such as VEVO who
release music videos, supporting VEVO will ensure we are up to date
with all the latest music, this will have a knock on effect with the
clothing as well because if we can keep up to date with the music
videos we can easily keep up to date with the fashion within the
music videos.
