DIGITAL TRENDSPOT 2012

Insights into digital trends and initiatives
A APP-BASED MUSIC ALBUM

Icelandic artist, Björk, recorded her eighth
studio album in October 2011, Biophilia, the
first app album in collaboration with Apple.
Biophilia was partly recorded on an iPad; the
multimedia project encompassed music,
apps, internet, and live shows.

                                                         First
                                                         App
                                                        Album
B BYOD

Spurred by the popularity of post-PCs
businesses have adopted the strategy of
allowing employees to buy or bring their own
device to work - and connected them to
corporate networks. Lately, airline carriers
and hotels offer audio and video via wi-fi.
C CROWDSOURCED LEARNING

At Udemy.com, users can build their own
courses for study. They can ask questions via
Sophia.org, and take exams on Veri.com
Knowledge seekers will increasingly look
beyond the traditional student-teacher
structure as learning is becoming more
democratic.
D DIGITAL DINING

Patrons to restaurants browse menus on
touch-screen tables or kiosks to order
meals. Their orders are instantly viewed
in the common kitchen via iPads. Food
is later delivered at their glass-covered
communal tables, replacing or reducing
waiters at digital restaurants.
E ECO:DRIVE

Fiat’s Eco:Drive, a USB-based application, collects driver data and vehicle behavior
to allow users to evaluate trip information for cost and environmental impact.
Eco:Drives can be shared via social media outlets or on Eco:Ville, where game rewards
based on sustainability are conferred, making it a practical and informative tool.
F FACE RECOGNITION

All major technology companies from Apple
to Google are experimenting with the
    implementation of facial recognition software.
Soon users won’t require pass codes to
access their Facebook and Twitter accounts.

                  FACIAL IDENTITY VERIFICATION
G GESTURE RECOGNITION

Gesture recognition is an innovative way of creating shop
windows, which allows customers to interact and control
content displayed. A Spain-based company, Tedesys, is
already creating waves with their Kinect software.
H HAMILTON RACE

The world's youngest Formula One champion
Lewis Hamilton raced against a virtual race car
composed of 28K Facebook profile photos.
Vodafone organized the race to mark the
release of its upgraded mobile data network. To
demonstrate the speed of the network Vodafone
pitted Hamilton on a 4.6 km track against
Vodafone Mobile Broadband network
downloading 288 MB worth of Facebook
pictures. Hamilton won. Vodafone won.
Creativity won. Lucky Facebook users who
submitted their photos to build the virtual car
through an app won products from Vodafone.
I INTERACTIVE SEATING

Instead of chasing social channels to reach customers with ads,
social branding is a strategic approach about building mutual
beneficial relationships between customers and brands.
J JEANS-CAM

Jeans makers utilize the true power of social networking by creating a bridge
of between offline and online activity, fostering conversations between both
communities. The Diesel Cam is a remarkable example of enabling users to
express through Diesel brand, creating identity and advocacy.
K KLOUT vs. KRED

Klout, launched in late 2009, became the
barometer for influence. Several criticisms to
its methodology, influence measurement, and
violation of privacy, gave birth to Kred to
identify the most influential people in interest-
based communities.
L LYTRO

With Lytro customers can instantly capture
interactive, living pictures first minus the
headache to focus. The camera uses a
series of algorithms to let users refocus after
pictures are shot.
M MULTIPLATFORM MEDIA

TV networks use creative interactive
multiplatform opportunities for viewers to
simultaneously watch a show, exchange IMs
or discuss it real time on social outlets
N NFC

Near field communication (NFC), a set of
standards for smartphones to establish radio
communication (tag), is probably as old as
smartphones. NFC applications seem to
grow after Google allowed consumers to
store credit card details in a virtual wallet and
MasterCard’s functionality of PayPass. Today
NFC can be used in social networking
situations, such as sharing contacts, photos,
videos, and entering multiplayer mobile
games.
O OBJECTIFYING OBJECTS

There are myriad apps to say “I love you” for
Valentine’s in today’s post-modern, digital
age. In a research conducted by 11N, people
fetish for physical tokens and the tactile, be it
greeting card to say “I love you”, concert
ticket, or other motivational objects.
P PLASTIC FUEL

Scientists at the Illinois Sustainable
Technology Center of University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign have discovered ways to
produce fuel in a small scale from plastic and
use to gas up their SUVs. Even though this
has nothing digital, it still finds a rightful place
in my trendspotting adventures.
Q QWiPS

QWiPS allows users to add their voice to
social conversation by voice-tagging pictures,
tweets, emails, posts on G+ and Facebook.
Are we soon going to see status updates in
social voices?
R RFID

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) uses
electromagnetic fields to wirelessly transfer data
from tag to an object that found vast applications
in animal identification, tracking progress in
assembly lines and supply chains, toll access, etc.
Today progressive-minded hotels and airlines use
RFID for check-ins. For instance, Qantas Airlines
recently introduced the next generation of luggage
tag called Q Bag Tag that uses RFID technology.
S SHOP ANYWHERE

Home Plus, a British discount store retail chain owned by Tesco
and Samsung in South Korea launched a series of virtual
stores on subway platforms. Click-and-deliver retail models
raise the level of convenience for time-strapped commuters.
T TABLET TOYS

Kids of the post-PC generation these days play with a combination
of digital-and-physical interactive experience. For instance, Disney’s
new AppMATes range pairs toys based on characters from Cars 2
with an iPad game that turns the tablet into a road surface.
U ULTRABOOK

Intel’s higher-end subnotebook, Ultrabook,
features low-power Intel processors with
integrated graphics, solid-state drives for
responsiveness, and unibody chassis to fit
larger batteries into reduced case size,
thereby competing directly with tablets,
iPads, and also Apple’s Macbook Air.
V VDIO

Danish digital entrepreneur and visionary,
Janus Friis, gave us many wonderful internet-
based services: KaZaA, Skype, and Joost.
His latest startup, Vdio, is an internet
television service, offering video streaming
over internet.
W Wii U

Wii U belongs to the eighth generation of video game consoles
       that will produce 1080p high-definition graphics, built-in
      touchscreen controller, and IBM’s multi-core power-based
processor with eDRAM cache, and is expected to be
completely backwards compatible with Wii and its peripherals.
X XBOX 720

Will Xbox720 be positioned as universal set-
top box? Integrating removable solid-state
storage cards, though pricey, is an amazing
development, but gamers want backward
compatibility to 360 and an optical drive (to
play DVDs).
Y YOUTUBE 2.0

For years we have been looking up to the
television for a revolution. The TV sat at the center
of the house, but did not facilitate inventive forms
of entertainment or communication. Finally, hybrid
TVs integrated set-top boxes, internet, and Web
2.0 features to offer technological convergence.
Now YouTube is making a comeback. Google is
reportedly spending millions on high-end
programming and YouTube is avaricious to be
seen on larger screens.
Z ZINK

Based on advances in chemistry,
engineering, physics, and image science,
Zink, acronym for Zero Ink, presents an
amazing new way to print in full color without
the need for those expensive cartridges or
ribbons.
IT IS SAID THAT A PRODUCT IS MADE THREE TIMES

                 1. RESEARCH

    2. DESIGN 3. MAKE
Today there’s a fourth: when the product is digitally

distributed. With the digital channels and social media

outlets available in the post-PC world, fresh and exciting

opportunities are at the marketer’s disposal to take

products and services out into the global marketplace .
