WHAT IS TRADITION AND INDIVIDUAL TELENT ACCORDING TO
T.S. ELIOT:
 Relationship between poet and poetry. Preceding literary tradition
is a matter of much wide significance.
 Tradition cannot be inherited and involves a great deal of labour
and erudition.
 The historical sense enables of writer to write not only with his own
generation inmind, but with feeling the whole of the literature.
 Tradition Means both the creative works of writers and f critics from
the past to the presenpr. It also both the individual qualities and
the common qualities.
TRADITION AND INDIVIDUAL TELENT
The essay Tradition and individual Telent was published in 1919.
This essay divided in three part:
《1》 concept of tradition
《2》concept of impersonal poetry.
《3》 Conclusion of this essay.
HISTORICAL SENSE :
 Historical sense involve the perception not only of the pastness of
past.but its also presence.
 These sense makes a writer traditional. One, who has the historical
sence , feels the whole of the literature of Europe from Homer down
to his own day.
 What is pastness of past ?
《1》The quality or state of the of being.
《2》 The subjective quality of something being remembered rather
than immediately experienced almost any popular record.
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN POET AND POETRY ABOUT
T.S.ELIOT
 Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion , but an escape from
emotion.
 Ir is not the expression of personality ,but an escape from personality.
 This theory implies that poets only write to remove themselves from
their day, to day emotion.
 Eliot says that “ emotion has nothing to do with a poet’s work.
 Poetry is just the evidence of life.
 Poet can survive everything but a misprint.
THEORY OF DEPERSONALIZATION:
☆ Depersonalization is a
subjective experience of
unreality in one’s sense of self.
☆ This essay , Eliot gives
important to poetry rather than
the poet which is
Depersonalization.
☆ Creates psychological
distance.

☆ T.S Eliot says “ Honest criticism and sensitive appreciation is
directed not upon the poet but upon the poetry.”

CONCLUSION OF THIS ESSAY:
 At the end of the third part of this essay, Eliot says this essay stops
at the starting of mysticism. And it can be applied by the
responsible person.
 We usually read poem eith the name and fame of the poet.
 T.s. Eliot says that, “ There are many people who appreciate the
expression of sincere emotion in were, and there is smaller number
of people who can appreciate technical excellence. But very few
know when there is expression of significant emotion, emotion
which has itslife in the poem and not in the history of the poetry.”
