• T.S.Eliot’s “Tradition and Individual Talent” was
Published in 1919 in the Egoist.

• For Eliot, tradition has three-fold significance-
   •Tradition can not be inherited.
   •It involves the historical sense.
•Historical sense give a feeling to write with
   the whole of literature.
• The essay is divided into three main section :

  1. Concept of tradition

  2. Theory of depersonalization

  3. Concludes the debate by saying that poet’s
sense of tradition and the impersonality of
     poetry are complementary things.
(1) Concept of tradition:-

- Every individual writer is a part of tradition.
Writer and Artist can not Escape from dead
  poet and artist.
- Knowledge of tradition plays vital role in the
  development of personal talent.
- The historical sense involves a perception, Not
only of the pastness of the past but of its
  presence.
- Art never imporves, but that the material of art
  is never quite the same.
(2) Theory of depersonalization:-
-“Honest criticism and sensitive appreciation is
directed not upon the poet but upon the poetry”.

-The more perfect the artist, the more completely
separate in him will be the man who suffers and
the mind which creates.

-It is not the expression of personality but an
escape from personality.
(3) Conclude the debate:-

-The emotion of art is impersonal.

-The poet can not reach this impersonality without
surrendering himself wholly to the work to be
done.
