LISTENING
Listening is to pay attention to somebody or something that you can hear to take
notice of what somebody says.
LISTENING VS HEARING
Hearing: Physical
process; natural;
passive.
Listening: Physical &
mental process; active;
learned process; a
skill.
Listening is hard! You
must choose
to participate in the
process of listening.
LISTENING INCLUDES
1. Recognizing Sounds.
2. Recognizing words.
3. Understanding Grammar.
4. Meaning whole sentence.
5. Understanding Cues.
TYPES
OF
LISTENING
There are many types of Listening but we discuss here some types.
A. Focused Listening:
In focused listening, The listener gives his/ her full attention and concentration on what
the speaker is saying to get information, knowledge and ideas.
Example: Intensive Listening, etc.
Casual listening is listen to someone or something without much attention and
concentration.
Example: Listening Music, etc.
B. Casual Listening:
C. Active Listening:
The way to improve your listening skills is to practice "active
listening.“ This is where you make a conscious effort to hear not only
the words that another person is saying but, more importantly,
the complete message being communicated.
D. Passive Listening:
Passive Listening is listening without reacting. Allowing someone to
speak, without interrupting. Not doing anything else at the same time.
TYPES OF LISTENER:
a. Non-listeners.
b. Minimal listeners .
c. Pretend listeners.
d. Active listeners.
The non-listeners do not listen at all because they are genuinely disinterested in the
subject. These people pretend to follow the speaker while they are preoccupied with
something else.
A. Non-Listeners:
B. Minimal Listeners:
First, listener makes responses while the current speaker is talking. Minimal
responses are signals which shown that the listener is receiving the message and
also indicate that the speaker can continue talking.
C. Pretend Listeners:
Pretend listeners give you the impression they hear what you say, and they may
hear some of your words, but they are not "present." They may nod their head or
offer another gesture to indicate they are listening, but they are not giving you their
full attention.
D. Active Listeners:
Active listeners have the highest level of listening skills and they are the ideal kind of
listeners for effective communication. To actively listen, you need to put in a lot of
concentration and emotional effort.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ACTIVE AND PASSIVE LISTENING
Active Listening: Passive Listening
Active listening includes responses
that demonstrate that you
understand what the other person
is trying to tell you about his or
herexperience.
Passive listening is one-way
communication where the
receiver doesn’t provide feedback
or ask questions and may or may
not understand the sender’s
message.
BARRIERS TO EFFECTIVE LISTENING
A barrier to listening is anything that is physically hindering you from
recognizing, understanding, and accurately interpreting the message that
you are receiving.
PHYSICAL BARRIER
Two major physical constraints of effective listening are
 Noise environment.
 Learning Impairment.
PSYCHOLOGICAL BARRIERS
The Psychological or Emotional Barriers refers to the psychological state i.e.
Opinions, attitudes, status consciousness, emotions, etc. of a person that
deeply affects the ability to communicate.
Keys Of Effective Listening
 Maintain eye contact with the
speaker.
 Pay attention and listen for
ideas.
 Don't interrupt, not delivery.
 Be attentive, but relaxed.
 Not to show boredom.
 Ask questions to clarify and not
to overshadow intelligence.
IMPORTANCE OF LISTENING

two mouths and one ear”. Mark Twain
"Listening is the most powerful form of acknowledgment …a way of
saying, “You are important.”
LISTENING REDUCES
STRESS
&
TENSION
Listening reduces stress and tension …minimizes confusion
and misunderstanding, eliminating related stress and
tension.

  • 3. LISTENING Listening is to pay attention to somebody or something that you can hear to take notice of what somebody says.
  • 4. LISTENING VS HEARING Hearing: Physical process; natural; passive. Listening: Physical & mental process; active; learned process; a skill. Listening is hard! You must choose to participate in the process of listening.
  • 5. LISTENING INCLUDES 1. Recognizing Sounds. 2. Recognizing words. 3. Understanding Grammar. 4. Meaning whole sentence. 5. Understanding Cues.
  • 7. There are many types of Listening but we discuss here some types. A. Focused Listening: In focused listening, The listener gives his/ her full attention and concentration on what the speaker is saying to get information, knowledge and ideas. Example: Intensive Listening, etc. Casual listening is listen to someone or something without much attention and concentration. Example: Listening Music, etc. B. Casual Listening:
  • 8. C. Active Listening: The way to improve your listening skills is to practice "active listening.“ This is where you make a conscious effort to hear not only the words that another person is saying but, more importantly, the complete message being communicated.
  • 9. D. Passive Listening: Passive Listening is listening without reacting. Allowing someone to speak, without interrupting. Not doing anything else at the same time.
  • 10. TYPES OF LISTENER: a. Non-listeners. b. Minimal listeners . c. Pretend listeners. d. Active listeners.
  • 11. The non-listeners do not listen at all because they are genuinely disinterested in the subject. These people pretend to follow the speaker while they are preoccupied with something else. A. Non-Listeners: B. Minimal Listeners: First, listener makes responses while the current speaker is talking. Minimal responses are signals which shown that the listener is receiving the message and also indicate that the speaker can continue talking.
  • 12. C. Pretend Listeners: Pretend listeners give you the impression they hear what you say, and they may hear some of your words, but they are not "present." They may nod their head or offer another gesture to indicate they are listening, but they are not giving you their full attention. D. Active Listeners: Active listeners have the highest level of listening skills and they are the ideal kind of listeners for effective communication. To actively listen, you need to put in a lot of concentration and emotional effort.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ACTIVE AND PASSIVE LISTENING Active Listening: Passive Listening Active listening includes responses that demonstrate that you understand what the other person is trying to tell you about his or herexperience. Passive listening is one-way communication where the receiver doesn’t provide feedback or ask questions and may or may not understand the sender’s message.
  • 14. BARRIERS TO EFFECTIVE LISTENING A barrier to listening is anything that is physically hindering you from recognizing, understanding, and accurately interpreting the message that you are receiving.
  • 15. PHYSICAL BARRIER Two major physical constraints of effective listening are  Noise environment.  Learning Impairment.
  • 16. PSYCHOLOGICAL BARRIERS The Psychological or Emotional Barriers refers to the psychological state i.e. Opinions, attitudes, status consciousness, emotions, etc. of a person that deeply affects the ability to communicate.
  • 17. Keys Of Effective Listening  Maintain eye contact with the speaker.  Pay attention and listen for ideas.  Don't interrupt, not delivery.  Be attentive, but relaxed.  Not to show boredom.  Ask questions to clarify and not to overshadow intelligence.
  • 18. IMPORTANCE OF LISTENING “If we were supposed to talk more than listen, we would have been given two mouths and one ear”. Mark Twain "Listening is the most powerful form of acknowledgment …a way of saying, “You are important.”
  • 19. LISTENING REDUCES STRESS & TENSION Listening reduces stress and tension …minimizes confusion and misunderstanding, eliminating related stress and tension.
