A line represents a “path” between two points. A line can be straight, curved, vertical, horizontal, diagonal, or zigzag. Lines imply motion and suggest direction. A line can also be implied, filled in by the mind when several points are positioned geometrically within a frame. For exaple placing dots in a square and your mind will fill in the outlines of the square for you. The directionof a line can also imply certain feelings. Horizontal lines imply tranquillityand rest. Verticallines imply power and strength. Oblique lines imply movement, action and change. Curvilinear lines imply quiet, calm and sensual feelings. Lines that converge imply depthand distance. A line is an effective element of design because it can lead the viewer’s eye.
…Example of different lines… Rectilinear(straight): Curvilinear(curved): Vertical: Horizontal: Diagonal: Line showing depth or distance: Imaginary lines:
Vertical lines made up of different colours and shade of colours. These almost make your eyes either go up or down naturally not horizontally. This picture appears long and thin. If we look at the same pattern turned on its side we feel a totally different feel even tho it’s the same picture. The movement of our eyes is horizontally rather then vertically. This picture appears short and fat.
…Line in Architecture… We can see in these structures how vertical, horizontal and diagonal line is used. The vertical lines cause the eye to go up and emphasise the height . The diagonal lines help to create the form of the building.
Curvilinear lines are used in the design of this building to crate an optical illusion of the building bending in different directions. The sensation it gives you is that when you look at it you almost feel dizzy and like u swaying from side to side with the curves.
…The national stadium in Beijing… Line is used very well here to show form and shape.
…Lines seen in nature… In nature we find many things that show the element of line. The lines can be vertical horizontal, curvilinear, rectilinear, defined, faint. Nature is the place line can be seen in all is splendour we and we don’t even realise it.
…Lines used to show movement… These pictures are all made up of either a single line which runs through to make a picture(the musicians)or many different lines causing movement.
…Lines used to show form… When lines are drawn in different directions the artists manage to create an illusion that objects have volume and form or the lines are placed in such a way that parts of the picture looks like it is bulging out of the page.
…The most IMPORTANT type of line… Yes this is a line that saves lives literally! It is a line that doctors use everyday, but to them this line is not just a line it has life and form and emotions this line is a person to them but we just see it as a line that goes up and down and sometimes remains vertical.
…Lines used to create depth…
….Interesting use of line… If you look carefully at this office one continuous line runs around the whole office. Its awesome!
…An interesting way to use electrical tape… This amazing art work interestingly made using vinyl adhesive electrical tape, is created by Rebecca wardas part of the urban culture project for Charlotte Street foundation at Kansas city. According to the artist, “My installations are site-specific works dependent upon the space they occupy. Utilizing existing lines, beams, and angles, each piece I create is informed by the individual site and its unique linear movement. Thus, my installations are inherently architectural. I choose patterns and shapes according to detailed measurements of the installation site. Ideally these patterns are numerically symmetrical or somehow numerically balanced, producing a dialogue between line and space. “
