There are three main types of lights used in media: key light, fill light, and back light. The key light is the brightest and is placed to one side to draw attention and cast shadows. The fill light has a lower intensity and fills in the shadows from the key light. The back light is behind the subject and provides highlights, definition, and separation to give a 3D appearance.

one side of the object or actor/model to keep the object or actor/model well
lit and to cast shadow.
• FILL LIGHT: is used to fill the shadow cast by the key
light and the intensity is usually much lower than the
key light.
• BACK LIGHT: is placed behind the actor/model or
object to provide highlights and definition and to
separate the subject from the rest of the set and to give
a 3D look.
