This document discusses the opportunity for nutraceuticals to contribute to Pakistan's economic growth. It notes that Pakistan has a large untapped market for nutraceuticals as well as competitive advantages in raw materials and labor costs. The global nutraceutical market is projected to reach $578 billion by 2025. The document proposes establishing a network called FARMAN to develop sustainable agro-industries for producing high-quality bioactive compounds, nutraceuticals, and affordable nutrition ingredients in Pakistan. This could generate $9 billion annually in exports and $4.5 billion in import substitution by 2025, creating over 300,000 new jobs.
2. NUTRACEUTICAL OVERVIEW
 Nutraceuticals term as bioactive compounds or functional foods
having ingredients with ability for health promotion and disease
prevention or enough medicinal properties.
 Nutraceuticals suitable for prevention and treatment of disease and in
case of non-communicable disease its delay the progression of
disease and, research proved that in few cases, nutraceutical help in
reversing non-communicable disease.
4. NUTRACEUTICAL MARKET DRIVERS
 Nutraceutical is an innovative approach for management of non-
communicable diseases (NCDs). The growing health consciousness
and awareness plus rising cases of chronic diseases, widening usage
of nutraceutical. Consumption delay the progression of all five NCDs,
which kill 41 million people each year, viz. to 71% of all deaths globally.
 Emerging of new technologies in food processing to upgrade the
nutritional benefits of food products. Additionally, all or any health
benefits attributed to functional foods and nutraceuticals based on
sound and accurate scientific criteria, including rigorous research and
studies of efficacy. Increase in consumer shift from synthetic food
products to organic and herbal-based products.
5. GLOBAL NUTRACEUTICAL MARKET
GLOBAL NUTRACEUTICALS MARKET
IS PROJECTED TO REACH
US$578.2 BILLION BY YEAR 2025,
WITH COMPOUND ANNUAL GROWTH RATE (CAGR) OF 8.8%
7. PRODUCTION POSSIBILITY OF
BIOACTIVE COMPOUND
 Oligomeric Proanthocyanidin Complexes (OPC)
 Lipophilic and Hydrophilic
 Amygdalin / Laetrile
 Cytotoxic (lymphocyte-mediated cytotoxicity)
 Choline and Trigonelline
 Tannins / Gallic and Ellagic
 Active hexose correlated compound (AHCC)
 Diosgenin / Yamogenin
 Gitogenin / Neotigogens
8. RAW INGREDIENTS NATIVE SOURCE
 Himalayas Mountains
 Margalla Hills
 Khewra Pink Salt Mines (Only in World)
 Pothohar Plateau Fruits and Seeds
 Indus Basin Fruits and Grains
 South Punjab Orchards Fruits and Seeds
 Thar Dessert Plants
 Costal Belt vegetation
9. INGREDIENTS COMPETITIVE EDGE
 Pakistan's wide variety of ecosystems and habitats range from the
Arabian Sea in the south to the second highest peak in the world, K-2, in
the north, all hosting a broad diversity of species, variety of climatic
zones and unique biodiversity, 6,000 species of flora / vegetation grown.
 Researchers’ reported around 700 species can be used for production of
high value bioactive compounds for medicinal purposes. “Four
ecosystems within Pakistan are considered some of the most biologically
outstanding ecoregions in the world”. (Extract from IUCN Report)
10. INGREDIENTS OF AFFORDABLE NUTRITION
 Pakistan’s children nutrition status is apologetic, high infant and under-5
mortality, high childhood malnutrition, as reported 40% of children under
five years old to be underweight and stunted.
 With capacity building and little change in current farming practices,
Pakistan’s farmers can produce / grow material for production of
affordable nutrition ingredients.
 Indigenously available low-prices produce, help entrepreneurs to
manufacture affordable nutrition products such as Phyto-protein, Aminos
and Specialty fats and oils at faction of world price.
11. PAKISTAN NUTRACEUTICAL STATUS
 Unfortunately, no formal agency had done any findings about Pakistan’s
functional food and nutraceutical installed capacity, domestic market and
export. An unknown source reported in April 2012 that Pakistan
Nutraceutical witnessed phenomenal increase of demand, its around
US$1 billion. Pakistan’s current production capacity less than 1% of the
world demand of nutraceutical.
 In 2012 that global market for nutraceuticals is projected to reach US$250
billion by 2018, these numbers is almost same as estimate. In 2017 Global
Functional Food and Nutraceutical market reported $214.6 billion, and
growing CAGR 8.8%. (Reported by US based BCC Research on July 23, 2018)
12. NUTRACEUTICAL MARKET PAKISTAN (2018)
NUTRACEUTICAL / FUNCTIONAL FOOD / HERBAL PREPARATION
 Domestic Market Demand: US$2.0 Billion
 Export: Few Hundred Thousand Dollars
 Production Capacity: US$2.0 Billion
NUTRACEUTICAL INGREDIENTS / BIOACTIVE COMPOUNDS
 Manufacturing capacity: For domestic market ZERO as only produce
for inhouse consumption
 Export: Zero as NO formal certified facility

14. PAKISTAN NUTRACEUTICAL FUTURE
PENTA-HELIX MODEL
1. Public: Government of Pakistan and Provincial ministries special
assistance for development bioactive compound, nutraceutical and
affordable nutrition ingredients across Pakistan where raw-material are
abundantly available.
2. FARMAN Network: Functional Food, Alternative & Regain Medicines
and Affordable Nutrition (FARMAN) Network defines as an association
of partner company (all separate autonomous companies) initiatives /
activities include the development of a sustainable of agro-industry,
manufacturing of bioactive compounds, and high-quality affordable
nutrition ingredients.
15. 3. Entrepreneurs: Nine (9) entrepreneurs will be invited to be part of
FARMAN network, partners / members focuses on three main sectors:
supply chain, production and marketing / distribution.
4. Foreign Direct Investment: FARMAN Network will connect nine partner
organizations with foreign venture capitalist / overseas development
finance institutions, proposed match making in transparent manner.
5. Academia: Partner / member will interact with University having food
science or agriculture faculty, and seek support in research, setting-up
quality standard, calibration of food laboratory equipment, training and
providing of trained personnel for production and marketing.
16. FARMAN NETWORK OBJECTIVES
 Encourage, drive and support the strategies of innovative companies
(partners) willing to enter into manufacturing of bioactive compounds,
nutraceutical and affordable nutrition ingredients in Pakistan.
 Goal to build a sustainable nutraceutical industry in Pakistan. To supply
high-quality bioactive compounds and nutraceutical for global market
and affordable nutrition ingredients for Pakistani malnourished children.
 For succeed members undertaking, FARMAN Network provides leverage
in several areas: financing, strategic support, co-governance, research
and Product development, design and marketing.
17. PAKISTAN NUTRACEUTICAL VISION 2025
 Nine (9) Manufacturing facilities across Pakistan with Capitalization
including working Capital of US$ 900 million to $1.350 Billion
 Contributory of huge foreign exchange earning and saving through
