This document discusses strategies to improve self-awareness, self-esteem, and self-development. It defines key terms like self-awareness as the ability to take note of ourselves, and self-esteem as how someone views themselves, positively or negatively. Factors that can affect self-awareness are discussed, like age, relationships, and life experiences. Learners are tasked with defining the terms, analyzing their own self-concept, and providing suggestions to help improve someone's self-esteem. Groups also design an action plan and performance to promote self-esteem.

Life orientation grade 10
1. Development of self in society: strategies to improve self-
awareness, self-esteem and self-development.
2. Learning Outcomes:
By the end of today’s lesson you will be able to…
Define key terms
Identify factors that affect self-awareness.
Analyse your own self-awareness.
3. What is Self Awareness
Self awareness basically describes a situation where the light of awareness
is turned onto ourselves. While awareness is our ability to take note; self-
awareness is our ability to take note of ourselves.
Self-awareness is the ultimate enabler. Without living knowledge of
ourselves (which is another way of defining self awareness) there would be
no hope for conscious, positive change.
Thanks to awareness we can take a good look at ourselves and our lives and
see what is working for us and what isn't. This awareness plants the seeds
of change in our subconscious mind.
It plants in us the drive and motivation to choose to do things differently.
4. What is self-esteem
Self-esteem is the way someone sees themselves
You can have an positive self-image or a negative self image.
People who suffer from a negative self-esteem usually see
themselves as worse than they are (conditions like anorexia
and bulimia can result from a negative/distorted self-image
resulting in them hating the way they look).
If you have a positive self-esteem you are more likely to see
yourself how you actually look not just how you think you
look.
5. We all have a picture of ourselves that is based on:
What we believe we are like as a person.
What we believe, other people think about us.
Self-esteem is the opinion you have of yourself and your
value as a person
6. What is self-development
• Self-development is the process or act of becoming
oneself, developing one’s potential, achieving an
awareness of one’s identity, and fulfilling oneself.
The self-motivation to change also comes from
a vivid awareness of what we want for ourselves
and our future, and a lucid recognition that we
simply won't be able to have it if we don't leave
our bad habits behind.
7. Identify factors that can affect self-
awareness:
The view we have or our-self changes as we progress
through the life-stages and the life experience we have.
If we have a clear picture of ourselves it makes us feel
secure and happy, even if we have a few negative images
amongst the good.
If we feel good about ourselves we have a positive self-
esteem, which helps us to relate to others.
If we get on with people it will improve our self-concept.
If we have a good self-concept, we value ourselves as people
and if we are valuable then we should expect others to
value us to.
