Lichen planus is a pruritic, papular skin condition characterized by violaceous polygonal papules and plaques that typically appear on the wrists, genitals, and mucous membranes. While lichen planus does not generally have a racial predilection, one study found a higher prevalence among African American children. In patients with dark skin, the lesions will not appear violaceous but rather be pigmented; however, they will still have the characteristic polygonal, flat-topped papules that shine when light reflects off of them.
