The library staff is pleased to
welcome you to your Daytona State
College Library! This guide will show
you how to use the library.
Fortunately, most of our library
resources are available 24/7 from
any computer with an Internet
connection. This means that you can
use the library even when it’s closed.
3. Let’s Get Started!
• Here are the basics:
• You will often have assignments for which you’ll have to use library
resources.
• The library website is the starting point for find all of those sources.
• http://library.daytonastate.edu/
• Always check the website for our hours of operation, as they change
for holidays and summer sessions.
• Our locations:
• Daytona Campus: Building 115 (3rd floor L. Gale Lemerand
Student Center)
• DeLand Campus: Building 1 (behind the administration building)

5. How to Find Sources
• There are four kinds of sources available through the library
website: books, e-books, articles, and streaming video.
• All four types of sources can be found using the library
search tool – the library catalog.
• The next few slides will take you step-by-step through using
the library catalog to find sources.
6. Finding Books
• Go to the library homepage:
• http://library.daytonastate.edu/
• Click on the “Quick Search” tab
• Type your topic into the search bar
• Click on the button at the end of the bar
• Look for Resource Type in the column at the left and click on
Books and the results will immediately filter

9. Find Your Book on the Shelf
• Use the Call Number (for example: DS558. P45 2007) to locate your
book on the shelf.
• The call number is the exact location of the book on the shelf. Each book
has a unique number.
• If the shelf was a street and the book was a house, you can think of the
call number as the address of the book.
• Books are shelved alphabetically by the first few letters of the call
number and are arranged by subject. Once you find one book, the other
books on that subject will be nearby.

11. Checking Out a Book
• Books with Circulation or Circulation/UCF may be checked out at the Circulation
Desk.
• Books with Reference must be used within the library.
• You will need your Student ID Card or another official form of ID to check out
books.
• If you can’t locate a book on the shelf, come to the Research Assistance Desk on
the second floor. The librarian there will help you.
12. Renewing Books Online
• You can renew your books from your account through the library website.
• Go to the library homepage: http://library.daytonastate.edu/
• Click on “Account” in the upper right hand corner.
• Click on SSO
• Log in using your DSC Email and Password
• Choose the books you want to renew by clicking on the book you want to renew,
then click on “Renew” or (if you want to renew all your books) “Renew All”
• NOTE: This will not work on the day the book is due. You will have to bring the
book in to renew it.
16. Finding E-Books
• E-books have several advantages over print books.
• They are available 24/7
• They tend to be newer than print
• The library has three times as many e-books as
print books
• E-books can be searched
• To find e-books, go to the library website.
• Click on the “Quick Search” tab and type in your topic,
then click on the “Search” icon
• Click on the Available Online filter to get access to only
E-books

19. Reading an E-Book
• To view the e-book, click on the book title and then
pick on the options under View Online at the bottom
of the record. E-books are available 24/7.
• You can save e-books to your e-shelf for easy
retrieval by the thumbtack symbol next to the title of
the book.
• After opening the book, click on PDF Full Text at the
left to read or search the book
• Click on Download This e-book to download. The
instructions for downloading are on the library home
page under the E-books tab.

22. Reading and Using E-Books
• Once you open the e-book, you will see the cover.
• Use the menu items above the book to save, print, or e-mail pages.
• You can also download the book from this screen.
• You can search within the book to narrow your findings.
• Click on Search Within and then type your search term into the box
and hit Enter.
• You will get a list of pages that contain your search term. Each item is
a direct link to that page. You can find the exact information you’re
seeking much more quickly.

25. Finding an Article
• From the library home page, click on the Articles tab.
• Type your key words into the Search box. Click the search icon.
• If you didn’t have any results, try using different key words.

27. Using Your Results
• You can limit your results to scholarly journal articles by clicking
Peer-reviewed Journals under Tweak Your Results in the left column.
• To view the article, click one of the links available under the View
Online section. Articles are available 24/7.
• You can save articles to your e-Shelf for easy retrieval by clicking
the thumbtack symbol next to the title of the article.
• Articles can be printed, saved, or e-mailed.
