What is a Title VI National
     Resource Center?
• Determined by the U.S. Department of
  Education’s Title VI program
• Established by the HEA of 1965, Title VI,
  Section 602a
• Centers (or consortia of centers) at
  institutions of higher education that provide
  comprehensive education on
  international/area studies
What do NRCs do?
From the International Education Programs Service:
• Teaching of any modern foreign language;
• Instruction in fields needed to provide full
  understanding of areas, regions, or countries in
  which the language is commonly used;
• Research and training in international studies;
• Language aspects of professional and other fields
  of study; and
• Instruction and research on issue in world affairs.

Africa Enslaved:
A Curriculum Unit on Comparative Slave Systems for Grades 9-12

Africa Enslaved explores comparative slave systems outside of the US, with particular focus on Latin
     America (Brazil and Haiti), Africa (the Swahili Coast), and the Middle East (Ottoman Egypt).
Africa Enslaved uses primary documents in a AP-style Document-Based Question (DBQ) format to guide
     students through a range of topics, including the legal status of slaves, slave labor, rights and
     responsibilities of slaves and slave-owners, slaves and religion, rebellions, runaways and
     emancipation, and abolition movements. Each case study includes a map, a one page historical
     background, and a glossary of terms. Discussion of the different slave systems is aided by the
     UNESCO Map of the Slave Route, and by charts that can be used to compare the systems with each
     other, or, with guided or independent research, to slavery in the United States.
This unit is correlated to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for World History and the
     National Standards for History.

     Studies, and Christopher Rose, Center for Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Texas at
     Austin.

• General Outreach Services –
  o Consulting/Advising/General Information for Teachers –
    providing information on general topics and resources pertaining
    to the world area of expertise;
  o Electronic Resources – having an informative web site or portal to
    web sites designed specifically for use by educators;
  o Visitor Speaker Bureau – providing speakers when available to
    visit classrooms or teacher events; speakers can be students,
    faculty or staff;
  o Resource Libraries – having a library of materials for use by
    teachers,
  o Simulation Activities – such as Model United Nations.

• Content/Curriculum Development–
  o Curriculum Development– Opportunities to work with NRCs to
    plan, develop and write content-based curricula;
  o Advisory Boards/Committees– serve on advisory or outreach
    committees of a NRC;
  o Course Access– content courses during summer or academic years
    for reduced costs towards professional development in area
    studies;
  o Special Guests, Visitors, Lecturers– access to special guests at the
    university for school/classroom visits

  • 2. Utilizing Title VI National Resource Centers to Enhance International Content: What federal funded international education programs at the post- secondary level can provide for primary and secondary programs
  • 3. What is a Title VI National Resource Center? • Determined by the U.S. Department of Education’s Title VI program • Established by the HEA of 1965, Title VI, Section 602a • Centers (or consortia of centers) at institutions of higher education that provide comprehensive education on international/area studies
  • 4. What do NRCs do? From the International Education Programs Service: • Teaching of any modern foreign language; • Instruction in fields needed to provide full understanding of areas, regions, or countries in which the language is commonly used; • Research and training in international studies; • Language aspects of professional and other fields of study; and • Instruction and research on issue in world affairs.

  • 7. Outreach Services Offered • Materials and Resource Development – development of teaching materials for use by K-12 teachers; o Aligned to national and state standards o Often developed by K-12 teachers o Usually free or very low cost o Materials are content-rich
  • 8. Sample Resources Area Studies Councils and Associations often sponsor book awards for children’s and juvenile literature featuring a certain world area. Lists are available on Outreach World at http:// www.outreachworld.org
  • 9. Sample Resources Africa Enslaved: A Curriculum Unit on Comparative Slave Systems for Grades 9-12 Africa Enslaved explores comparative slave systems outside of the US, with particular focus on Latin America (Brazil and Haiti), Africa (the Swahili Coast), and the Middle East (Ottoman Egypt). Africa Enslaved uses primary documents in a AP-style Document-Based Question (DBQ) format to guide students through a range of topics, including the legal status of slaves, slave labor, rights and responsibilities of slaves and slave-owners, slaves and religion, rebellions, runaways and emancipation, and abolition movements. Each case study includes a map, a one page historical background, and a glossary of terms. Discussion of the different slave systems is aided by the UNESCO Map of the Slave Route, and by charts that can be used to compare the systems with each other, or, with guided or independent research, to slavery in the United States. This unit is correlated to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for World History and the National Standards for History. Africa Enslaved was developed by Natalie Arsenault, Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies, and Christopher Rose, Center for Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. Outreach Services Offered • General Outreach Services – o Consulting/Advising/General Information for Teachers – providing information on general topics and resources pertaining to the world area of expertise; o Electronic Resources – having an informative web site or portal to web sites designed specifically for use by educators; o Visitor Speaker Bureau – providing speakers when available to visit classrooms or teacher events; speakers can be students, faculty or staff; o Resource Libraries – having a library of materials for use by teachers, o Simulation Activities – such as Model United Nations.

Professional Opportunities • Content/Curriculum Development– o Curriculum Development– Opportunities to work with NRCs to plan, develop and write content-based curricula; o Advisory Boards/Committees– serve on advisory or outreach committees of a NRC; o Course Access– content courses during summer or academic years for reduced costs towards professional development in area studies; o Special Guests, Visitors, Lecturers– access to special guests at the university for school/classroom visits o Partnerships, Collaborations, Special Programming
